The medieval poem, comprising ten stanzas and thematising the Mother of God weeping over her Son who had just died on the cross, must have exerted an almost magical attraction on composers of all times. There are said to be no fewer than 600 settings of it, the best known being by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. But the Italian Luigi Boccherini, who worked in Spain and was a master of the directly appealing, unaffectedly melodic classical style, succeeded in creating a no less sublime version that touched the heart in its simplicity.
