The Case of the Running Bag: A Jonas Watcher Detective Adventure , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 233min
I was just waking up. I could hear 12 midnight being chimed in the distance. I was cold, wet, and coming down from the DTs. I looked up and could see the underneath of a wharf above me. And that was just the beginning. Jonas Watcher had no memory of how he got there. As he started climbing up the ladder to the wharf, he found he was tangled in some sort of net. Suddenly a large heavy object dropped onto him and he fell into the bay still snared by the net, which had also captured the object. Luckily, the weight of the object had tightened the net, so he was able to pull himself out of the water and climb up to the wharf. After resting on the wharf, he examined the object and saw that it was a bag with latches. When he opened it, he found some things that propelled him into the middle of a mystery involving, well, you'll have to listen to the book to find out what. It is San Francisco during the 1930s, and Jonas Watcher must solve The Case of the Running Bag if he wants to stay alive. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Ferrand. The Cards of Death , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 14min
Summer finally arrived and Jim Edwards and his friends Dan, Bob and Steve, all decided they would take a ride cross country on a 19th century train that was refurbished to attract tourists and show what it was like to travel on a train from that era. Jim wanted to celebrate their retirement together on a piece of history that has been forgotten. Little did these friends know that their retirement trip on the train would send them into a world of the unknown. Finally, Jim and his friends arrived at the train station fifteen minutes before the train's departure, so they had enough time to check in their luggage and board the train. Jim and his friends boarded the train and the train blew its whistle then slowly picked up speed down the railway through the tunnel. Jim and his friends were excited to be traveling together as friends on a 19th century train. Everything was going fine, until a stranger entered their coach seating compartment and put his carry on bag above Jim and Dan and said "I hope you all don't mind if I share your compartment because the other compartments are full."Jim replied "I think that will be alright," Steve chimed in and said "What is your name?" The stranger replied as he chuckled, "Dr. Death..." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Luke Smith. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/008790/bk_acx0_008790_sample.mp3. The Night of the Bloody Dead: 31 Horrifying Tales from the Dead, Book 5 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 3min
Something from hell was about to be unleashed in a small town called Worthington that could have been avoided. It was a day like any other day, but even something that is routine can also cause grave consequences if one thing is overlooked. The Worthington Chemical Plant always safely stored their toxic waste in a secure location in the back of the plant, but one employee was frustrated with his job, and left one of the barrels outside the secured location, and some teenagers were drinking a six-pack of beer outside the fence of the plant when one of the teens said, “Look, what do you think is in that barrel?” ”I don't know stupid! Why don't we go check it out?” replied one of the teens. The three teens scaled the fence and ran over to the barrel. The lid on the barrel wasn't secure. One of the teens took off the lid and said, “It's just some green goop.” The barrel was too heavy for the teens to carry so they found some empty paint cans and filled them up with the green goop. One of the teens asked, “What are we going to do with this?” Another teen chimed in and said, “Why don't we pour this goop into the water tower, besides there is so much water in the tank that it probably wouldn't hurt a fly.” The teens were dead wrong. ungekürzt. The James Barkley Gang , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 6min
The James Barkley gang were well known outlaws in the town of Gold Dust during 1876. James Barkley thought if anyone found any gold in the town of Gold Dust they wouldn't mind sharing, but he was dead wrong. Because no one in the town liked the James Barkley gang. One night when James Barkley and his gang were camping out planning their next stage coach robbery, James said, "There is a stage coach coming this way in the mid-morning around high noon and there is around $100,000 in cash and this will make us rich." Black Jack chimed in and said, "James, this will make us famous outlaws." James had a short fuse and if he got into an argument with someone, his six shooters did the talking, and that wasn't a good thing. He was known as the fastest gun in the west. He wore a special calfskin vest with built-in holsters, containing two Colt .41 caliber revolvers. As the men were sleeping, one of James's men by the name of Saddle Jack Thompson was snoring, and James was getting upset because he needed to get a good night's rest in order to be focused on the stage coach robbery in the morning. So he woke up Saddle Jack and told him to stop snoring, but a few minutes later the snoring continued, so James pulled out one of his Colt .41's and shot him in the head. The snoring stopped. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James H Kiser. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/075990/bk_acx0_075990_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 534min
Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing--and recovering--their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, "this time is different"--claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong. Covering 66 countries across five continents, This Time Is Different presents a comprehensive look at the varieties of financial crises, and guides us through eight astonishing centuries of government defaults, banking panics, and inflationary spikes--from medieval currency debasements to today's subprime catastrophe. Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, leading economists whose work has been influential in the policy debate concerning the current financial crisis, provocatively argue that financial combustions are universal rites of passage for emerging and established market nations. The authors draw important lessons from history to show us how much--or how little--we have learned. Using clear, sharp analysis and comprehensive data, Reinhart and Rogoff document that financial fallouts occur in clusters and strike with surprisingly consistent frequency, duration, and ferocity. They examine the patterns of currency crashes, high and hyperinflation, and government defaults on international and domestic debts--as well as the cycles in housing and equity prices, capital flows, unemployment, and government revenues around these crises. While countries do weather their financial storms, Reinhart and Rogoff prove that short memories make it all too easy for crises to recur. This Time Is Different exposes centuries of financial missteps. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Pratt. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/gdan/000329/bk_gdan_000329_sample.mp3. I See The Dead , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 14min
The Blevins family had been searching many months for their dream home out in the country because the city life just wasn't their cup of tea. Then just as they were about to give up there was a sign next to a gravel road that said, "Sudden death in the family caused our beautiful home to be put up for sale, please don't pass up this great deal of a lifetime." "John, turn here, maybe this is what we've been searching for," replied his wife. "Are you sure? This gravel road looks long and it's beginning to storm, why don't we just go home and try in the morning when the weather is better," said her tired husband. "We're already here, we may as well check it out and get out of this rain, besides the rain will probably let up by the time we're through looking at the house," Mary asked in a reassuring tone of voice."Fine, you win, let's check it out," said her frustrated husband. John drove on up the muddy gravel road as the storm got more intense and could barely see the house because of the rain, his car inched closer to the front of the house.John and Mary's son chimed in and said, "Mom! Dad! Look over there?" "Look at what?" said his mother."There's a man walking in the front door with an ax," said Billy in a frightened voice. "I don't see anyone Billy, you must be imagining things," replied his mother. "I'm not imagining things, I saw a man entering the house," said Billy frustratingly. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Halloween Hanging (Urban Legend) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 6min
It was Halloween Night and Damon was excited about trying out his new Halloween prop in his front yard next to the busy road that ran in front of his house. He was putting on the finishing touches to his new prop when some friends from school decided to drop by and check out his new prop he had been bragging about at school all day. His friends Steve, Jack and Karen rode together in the same car and pulled into Damon's driveway and watched as Damon was practicing slipping the noose around his neck. They all got out of the car and walked up to Damon watching him working feverously before the Trick-or-Treaters arrived asking for candy. Steve said "Looks like you're going to have the coolest Halloween prop in town." "Thanks, Halloween is my favorite day of the year, and I thought I would come up with something you don't always see on Halloween." Karen chimed in and said "Guys it's starting to get dark and we don't want to be late to the party." "You don't have to rush off don't you want to stay just a little while to see the look on the Trick-or-Treaters faces as they see me hanging from the tree as though it's the real thing?" Steve interrupted and said "We'd really like to hang with you a while, but my girlfriend worked hard on decorating the party for us and I don't want to disappoint her. I'm sure you'll understand." "That's ok, I tell you what I'll video tape it so you can watch it at my house tomorrow. Does that sound OK with you guys?" asked Damon. Steve replied, "Sounds great, we'll all be there tomorrow, that's a promise." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ted Brooks. The Wisdom of Life, Counsels and Maxims , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 562min
'The two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom.' Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 19th century because his humanistic, atheistic, if pessimistic views chimed with a new secularism that was emerging from a Western society dominated by religion. Despite his rather forbidding image (and a few outdated views), he is one of the most approachable German philosophers, and this is certainly evident in these two key works, The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims. This is, says his translator, T. Bailey Saunders, because his theories were based on observation and experience - 'interpreting the world as it is'. In The Wisdom of Life, Schopenhauer considers eudemonology (the science of happiness) - 'the art of ordering our lives so as to obtain the greatest possible amount of pleasure and success'. He begins by dividing 'differences in the human lot' into three: what a man is in the sense of personality; what a man has in terms of property and possessions; and how a man stands in terms of the estimation of others. In the course of the book, he expands on these divisions. In Counsels and Maxims, he develops the theme of eudemonology by advising that it is best to replace the pursuit of pleasure and happiness with a more measured approach based on the avoidance of pain and suffering. However, his views are not as negative and pessimistic as this may seem, not least because he was the first major Western philosopher to be influenced by Eastern thought, notably Buddhism, which he acknowledges. In his exposition, Schopenhauer draws on numerous sources as varied as Plato and Horace, Goethe, Shakespeare, Silesius and, of course, his own major work The World as Will and Representation (1818). Both The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims first appeared (under the collective heading of Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life) in his co ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Rintoul. Kill Me Dead or I'll Be Back! , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 12min
We've all heard this line before: "You better kill me dead, if you don't, I'll be back."That's exactly what Tim said to these men that were terrorizing the town he was raised in. These three brothers Dave, Tom and Jack were the most hated in the town of Hattiesfield. Somehow these brothers didn't have anything better to do like have a job. They were always drinking heavily and getting into fights with the men in town because they would flirt with their women and carry it just a little too far.One day when Tim was driving home a car pulled up right beside him and one of the men rolled down his passenger side window and said "Hey Tim do you want a race?"Tim replied "Not interested.""Are you chicken;" asked Jack, one of the passengers in Tom's car."No! Why don't you guys leave me alone!"; exclaimed Tim. The men started laughing and calling Tim chicken. Tom decided to play chicken with Tim so he slowed the car down, and got behind Tim's car, and tapped his bumper several times. Tim started driving faster, but Tom wasn't about to let up on the chase. Tim finally lost control of his vehicle and his car went off into the ditch and caught on fire. Tom pulled his car over and all three men got out of the car and pulled Tim from his burning car.Tim said "Thanks! I was almost a dead man."Jack said "Did you really think we pulled you out of your burning car to save your life. We only pulled you out because we're going to whoop your ass!?Tim replied "Why?"Dave chimed in as he took a swig of beer and said "We like terrorizing this town." Then Dave started kicking Tim in his side. Tim moaned and said "You better kill me dead or I'll be back!"Dave, Tom and Jack just laughed as they popped the tops of their beer cans and beat him severely. Before Tim passed out and finally took his last breath he said "I'll be back, mark my words." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael A. Adashefski.
