Infinity - Gregorian in Progress
Dino Mariani Dino Mariani was born in Molise - Italy (1954). In 1965 he moved to Milan with his family. Since 1972 he studied at G.Verdi Conservatory where he graduated in Basson and Composition. He studied orchestral conducting at the 'Civica Scuola di Musica' of Milan. At the same time, once he finished the Scientific High Scool, he attended two years of Law Faculty which leaved to devote himself entirely to the musical studies. In the Seventies he lived the most varied musical experiences. He easily alternated between the academic studies, performances in 'classical' areas as soloist, in orchestra or chamber groups and perfomances in the various Pop and Jazz Festival of that time, both as a guitarist and as bassoonist, bringing for the first time this instrument out of the 'classical' ambit. He recorded several discs for many artists of Milan in that time. From 1978 to 1980 he played in the 'International Folk Group' of Moni Ovadia for whom, along with the inseparable friend oboist Mario Arcari, wrote most of musics recorded in 'Il nonno di Jonni' and 'Ensemble Havadi‡'.He played in the disc 'Le mille e una notte' for the homonymous show of 'Teatro dell'Elfo'.. With GFI accomplished several tours in Italy and Europe. At the same time he founded the DOM Democratic Orchestra Milano, big formation in which live together 'classical' musicians and 'young jazz musicians' still representative on the national scene, and not just, of the home-made jazz. He wrote for the DOM several pieces which for their characther of synthesis between classical and jazz, gained considerable interest of public and critics.. He conducted the same in important festivals in Italy and Europe, playing in first performance pieces written specifically for it by Enrico Rava, Antony Braxton, Alex Schlippenbach, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, etc. He finished this experience in 1984 recording the disc 'Invenzioni'. Since 1985 he devoted himself entirely to the composition. He studied with Sciarrino, Ferneyhaugh, Grisey, Rotondi, and Zosi Donatoni, deepening the knowledge of the most advanced techniques of composition and instrumental. He was awarded in many international contests of Composition from jury like Berio, Abbado, Petrassi, Huber, Pousseur, Morricone, Chailly, Ferneyhaugh, Donatoni, Sciarrino, Clementi ecc. And his music was performed in prestigious contexts both in Italy and abroad. To the increasingly introspective and isolated activity of Composer, he put side by side, from 1988 to till today, the teaching as a professor of Composition at different italians Conservatories. He lives, since some years, in Amalfitan Coast..Last work: 'INFINITY' has been conceived in the last months of 2006.As ripe rediscovery of 'simple', the return to primordial emotions. The enjoyment in returning to play different instruments: flutes, bassoon, sitar, keyboards, acoustic guitar, the old dear Fender Stratocaster. Inspiring source, 9 Gregorian Chants, as the orders of the angelic hosts grouped into three angelic choirs, sometimes freely transcribed, other philologically made mensurable. The 'Voice of the Soul' for excellence which alternates, merges with jazz and blues singing, in rhythmic contexts with progressive rock flavour, or pure melodic contexts in search of emotions. Dino Mariani - Musices Officina INFINITY - Gregorian in Progress Classical? Jazz? Blues? Rock? Pop? ...'the Voice of the Soul' meets the today's music... 'A pleasant surprise the work by Dino Mariani who seems to have found a finally convincing way in search for a music unrelated and independent from genres, as evidenced also from the structure of the group, with the most varied instruments whose mixture leads to original and new solutions.' La Repubblica 'The music of Dino Mariani, conductor, composer, polyinstrumentalist and gray eminence requires an uncommon culture and capacity for synthesis.' Il Giornale '...They amazed, surprised, innovated.' Jazz Magazine '...original music influenced by all the sound developments of the last years ... ' Progres '...on a collective basis of very beautiful orchestration, it gave very strong musical emotions. Here is a music to discover urgently.' Dino Mariani Nel 1954 nasce in Molise. New World
What is Svara? Svara is a poly-musical ensemble. Our goal is an innovative foray into unexplored musical spaces. We are 4 musicians who have experienced deep training in a variety of very traditional music forms (including western traditions), from renowned and insightful teachers. We each bring musical ideas and experience from all over the world: India, Bali, Brazil, Europe (Eastern and Western), America. Rock, jazz, classical, contemporary creative music. We have tried to channel that training, that exposure into what we hope is an organic expression, one that incorporates what we have learned from our wonderful teachers into a unique music. We are acoustic. There are no electric instruments on this recording, no synthesizers, nothing against them! It's just not what we bring to our musical experience. All of our music incorporates improvisation - some pieces are almost completely improvised, others have an 'open' section for spontaneous exploration. As closely as possible, this recording represents the way we really play. David Trasoff has studied sarode performance under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, India's 'Living National Treasure,' since 1973. Since then Schembri has worked as conductor with the Theatre du Capitole and with the Orchestra National du Capitole in Toulouse, l'Orchestre National de Lyon, Permanent Conductor with the OPF in Paris, Principal Conductor with the Orquestra Metropolitana Lisboa as well as lecturer in music at the University of Malta. Brian Schembri has composed music for theatre productions at the Manoel Theatre and Teatru Strada Stretta in Malta and the Comédie Française in Paris and has recently recorded Charles Camilleri's new Symphony nr 1 and Kosmos with the the Royal Scottish National Symphony Orchestra. Press comments : These sparkling performances from Brian Schembri and the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra could not be more stylish or persuasively spontaneous, and the vividly atmospheric recording is first rate. (Gramophone Magazine) A pianist of high calibre. (The Times, UK) ...without the least fault in taste, there was passion and lyrical emotion. (Est Republicain, France) ...very well equipped, both technically and emotionally... (The Daily Telegraph, UK) ...he tackles the work with character and breadth...giving it delicacy and sensibility. (Ouest France) ...a pianist in the grand manner...daringly unfamiliar interpretative forays kept always within the limits of good taste.... (The Times, Malta) ...aristocratic, vibrant, elegant gestures, clearly designing the music, without dryness or heaviness... (Lyon Figaro, France) As soon as the curtain rises we are sure of success with Brian Schembri's clear and secure conducting. (Opera International) ...conducting...a strong, generous and broad vision, as lyrical as one could imagine, without excess...a completely convincing and magnificent sound. (Paris Normandie, France) Everything sounds as if it has been meticulously prepared, but the control is never paralysing and the final impression is of focused vitality....he infused the interpretation with unbelievable warmth. (The Sunday Times, Malta) Brian Schembri with his nervous baton, his guiding gestures full of complicity and warmth, deserves a general bravo all for himself..." (La Tribune Le Progres, France) The reading was intelligent, musical and it did justice to this masterpiece (Shostakovich Symphony nr 14)...it was a great interpretation...a great symphonic concert...clearly the best concert of the season and the best event of all the Portuguese lyrical season.
