Elsewhere, Doug's noisy brakes have him wondering if his mechanics are too nice to be competent; Warren wants to give his Olds a fresh paint job, but his wife is convinced that will only speed its demise; and Mike is wondering why we hang fuzzy dice from rear-view mirrors, rather than, say, fuzzy socket wrenches. The author of A Death in Texas uncovers a strange corner of the war on terror in Lackawanna, New York, home of what was called the first homegrown al-Qaeda terrorist cell in America. Or was it? The "Lackawanna Six" were young men, born of Yemeni families long settled in upstate New York, who took a trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan and spent time in an al-Qaeda training camp long before the specter of 9/11, before most people had even heard of Osama Bin Laden, and before the existence of the Homeland Security Act. This is a story of pre-emptive imprisonment for an act of terrorism never committed, a terrorist cell that may not even have been a cell, and a mysterious al-Qaeda contact who was supposedly killed but whose remains were never found. Dina Temple-Raston, a superb chronicler of the real life of America, forces a re-evaluation of the casualties of the war on terror. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Marguerite Gavin. Kresge Auditorium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was filled to capacity. Outside, hundreds were turned away for lack of room, while inside, Noam Chomsky spoke to nearly 1,300 concerned citizens about the invasion and occupation of Iraq and the implications for U.S. foreign policy. Chomsky began with a review and analysis of the State of the Union Address and other necessary allusions. Referring to the U.S. government's role as a terrorist organization in Central America during the 80s, Chomsky wondered aloud when the U.S. will become a part of the world justice system instead of outside it. Chomsky pointed out how the U.S. government had opened a Pandora's Box with their loose interpretation of pre-emptive strike. Sponsored by United for Justice with Peace and the M.I.T. Greens, and organized by Arlington United for Justice with Peace. Recorded by Roger Leisner on January 23, 2004, at M.I.T. in Cambridge, MA. Language: English. Narrator: Noam Chomsky. The epic struggle for control of Los Angeles and the history of the 30s, 40s, and 50s in America's dream city. Now the Fox UK TV series Mob City.Mid-century Los Angeles. A city sold to the world as 'the white spot of America', a land of sunshine and orange groves, wholesome Midwestern values and Hollywood stars, protected by the world's most famous police force, the Dragnet-era LAPD. Behind this public image lies a hidden world of 'pleasure girls' and crooked cops, ruthless newspaper tycoons, corrupt politicians, and East Coast gangsters on the make. Into this underworld came two men - one L.A.'s most notorious gangster, the other its most famous police chief - each prepared to battle the other for the soul of the city. The Mob had to contend with downtown business (the Chandlers, of LA Times fame), City Hall, and above all the LAPD - and the story is gripping. In these pages you will find the kind of gangsters, cops, pols, and madams familiar from The Big Sleep, Chinatown, and LA Confidential - only this time it's non-fiction, a serious portrait of how the 20th century's most dangerously unaccountable, intrusive model of pre-emptive policing got started. It's a story with great resonance today. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kirby Heybourne. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/orio/000652/bk_orio_000652_sample.mp3. The Svalbard Passage is a rare work of fiction: the power and dramatic intensity of the writing are matched by the authenticity of the writers' extraordinary knowledge of political reality; the result is a work of imagination and prophecy. Readers of John Le Carré, Richard Condon, Ken Follett, and Robert Ludlum will find it irresistible. The mysterious deaths of an international expedition of ice climbers on the remote face of the Spitsbergen glacier triggers what may be the first pre-emptive U.S. nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. The chain of events that follow moves swiftly and brilliantly from cosmopolitan, placid Oslo to the war-game rooms of the Pentagon and reaches a terrifying climax on the icy wastes of Spitsbergen, above the northern coast of Norway-and the Svalbard Passage. Caught in a terrifying net of brinksmanship are a worldly, elegant Norwegian diplomat; a fiery and beautiful German journalist; an uncommitted American pacifist; a ruthless CIA agent; and an equally ruthless Russian, a pawn of the KGB. Unknowingly, acting out of their private compulsions, they bring the world to the edge of global disaster. Through the weave of this richly atmospheric novel of suspense runs the stormy, sensual love story of Martin and Ulrike, lovers who come to maturity in the face of annihilation. ungekürzt. Although the exact dates of construction of the so-called Saxon Shore forts are uncertain, the development of the frontier system that ran form the Wash to the Solent on the south-east coast of Roman Britain was spread over at least a century and a half. Many of the new forts were notable for the superior strength of their defences, with thicker stone walls bristling with projecting curved bastions. These and other features were clearly designed to them more difficult to storm than old-style frontier forts with their classic playing-card shape and internal towers. Defense earlier in the Roman era had meant aggressive response in the open field or even offensive pre-emptive strikes into enemy territory. The new trend was to build stronger, the emphasis being on solid, more static defense, anticipating attack and absorbing it rather than going out to meet it. Most of the major harbours and estuaries of the east and south-east coasts of Britain were fortified in this manner. There was a similar series of military installations across the Channel in Gaul, extending along the northern coast as far as what is now Brittany. Whatever their precise tactical and strategic function, a continuing debate to which this book contributes, the construction of these stone forts represented a huge outlay of money, and commitment of manpower and materials. The Saxon Shore Forts are among the most impressive surviving monuments of Roman Britain. This book addresses a number ofthe fascinating questions they provoke - Who built these Forts? When and for what purposes? How were they built? How did they operate? Who garrisoned them, and for how long?
