Forty years ago, two women's movements drew a line in the sand between liberals and conservatives. The legacy of that rift is still evident today in American politics and social policies. Gloria Steinem was quoted in 2015 (The New Yorker) as saying the National Women's Conference in 1977 "may take the prize as the most important event nobody knows about." After the United Nations established International Women's Year (IWY) in 1975, Congress mandated and funded state conferences to elect delegates to attend the National Women's Conference in Houston in 1977. At that conference, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, and other feminists adopted a National Plan of Action, endorsing the hot-button issues of abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and gay rights - then a new issue in national politics. Across town, Phyllis Schlafly, Lottie Beth Hobbs, and the conservative women's movement held a massive rally to protest federally funded feminism and launch a pro-family movement. Although much has been written about the role that social issues have played in politics, little attention has been given to the historical impact of women activists on both sides. Divided We Stand reveals how the battle between feminists and their conservative challengers divided the nation as Democrats continued to support women's rights and Republicans cast themselves as the party of family values. The women's rights movement and the conservative women's movement have irrevocably affected the course of modern American history. We cannot fully understand the present without appreciating the pivotal events that transpired in Houston and thereafter. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dina Pearlman. The God of the Old Testament commanded and endorsed many practices that we find morally reprehensible today. High on the list was the institution of slavery, which features prominently in several sections of the Hebrew Bible. Fathers could sell their daughters into slavery, masters could beat their slaves, creditors could carry off children for failure to repay a debt, and foreigners could be kept for life, passed down as inherited property. How are we to make sense of all of this from our modern point of view?Atheists and skeptics will often say that the God of the Old Testament was a moral monster for endorsing such atrocities. Christians will often respond that the slavery in the Hebrew Bible wasn’t as bad as we think and was more like having a job or owning a credit card. While both sides of this debate are sincere in their positions, neither are ultimately correct. Our conclusions must derive from a thorough understanding of both the Old Testament and ancient Near Eastern contexts. This book will:Provide a detailed overview of slavery laws and practices in the Old Testament and the ancient Near East.Examine the significant - and highly controversial - passages in the Hebrew Bible that deal with slavery, including laws about beating your slave, taking foreign chattel slaves, and what to do if a slave runs away from their master.Answer the most challenging questions about slavery in the Old Testament, including, “Could you beat your slave within an inch of their life and get away with it?” “Were slaves just property that had no human rights?”, and “Did the Old Testament really endorse slavery?” ungekürzt. But Kin has his own secrets, and is haunted by visions of a future he'd rather die than see realized. A gathering storm.... Kag assassins lurk within the Shogun's palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins. A waif from Kigen's gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to survive. This is an audio summary of Ready Player One, a 2011 LitRPG science-fiction debut novel by American author Ernest Cline. The story, set in a dystopian 2040s, follows protagonist Wade Watts on his search for an Easter egg in a worldwide virtual reality game, the discovery of which will lead him to inherit the game creator's fortune. Teenager Wade Watts lives with his aunt in Oklahoma City in the "stacks", a poverty-stricken district constructed of trailer homes piled on top of each other. He spends his spare time as a "gunter" ("egg hunter"), logging on to the OASIS as an avatar under the moniker Parzival, reading Halliday's journal Anorak's Almanac, and researching details of the 1980s pop culture, mainly classic video games and movies that Halliday loved. One day, he realizes that the first key is located on the same virtual world as his own online high school, in a recreation of the Dungeons & Dragons module Tomb of Horrors. He meets Art3mis, a famous female gunter and blogger who has been exploring the place, and advances further than she does when he defeats the AI Acererak at the video game Joust. He is awarded the Copper Key, and Parzival appears on the "Scoreboard", attracting the world's attention. Parzival completes the gate's puzzles by playing through the Dungeons of Daggorath video game and then role-playing Matthew Broderick's character in the film WarGames. Art3mis clears the gate shortly afterwards as does Wade's friend Aech. Wade's fame enables him to make a living by endorsing virtual products. Note: Author Cline sold the rights to publish the novel in June, 2010, in a bidding war to Crown Publishing Group. A film adaptation, screenwritten by Cline and Zak Penn and directed by Steven Spielberg, was released on March 29, 2018. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Theis. The 2020 election, who will win?As it stands, Donald J. Trump has the highest likelihood of winning this year's presidential election.Listen up!Out of all the presidential candidates, Trump receives the most coverage. Historically, it would seem that candidates who trend, or by today's stands get viewed the most, generally win the election, as Obama proved in both the 2008 and 2012 presidential election.Trump is in a unique spot because he doesn't have to pay for campaign ads to be seen the way the other candidates do. Every tweet makes waves, and no other candidates have ever done so. Secondly, the Democratic establishment does not want Bernie Sanders as their candidate, which is made evident by all the Democratic candidates dropping out of the election and endorsing former vice president Joe Biden. History is repeating itself. During the 2016 election, the democratic establishment went against Bernie and supported presidential candidate and corporate Democrat Hillary Clinton, which created a rift between voters and the democrat party. Mostly the party chose for the people, and the rest is history. As you will witness in the foreseeable future, history is repeating itself. The difference between parties is that the Republican Party, for the most part, is united; the only outlier on their side is Mitt Romney. They are a united front, thus have fewer obstacles to overcome this election season. Meanwhile, the Democrats have far too many challenges they must address if they wish to defeat Trump. For example, corporate Democrats won't vote for a Democratic-socialist, but they will vote for Uncle Joe. Young voters will vote for Sanders, but they aren't turning out in the numbers that he needs. The thing that Biden has going for him is that his name is associated with former president Obama, which carries weight because he was a part of history. Disclaimer: This an examination is not an endorsement for any ungekürzt. The dominant narrative about the causes of the Civil War is the work of historians obsessed with social activism instead of history. They point to the 13th, 14th, and 15th postbellum amendments as proof that the North was ultimately fighting to provide slaves with honorable freedom, but deny that the increase in tariffs on dutiable items from 19 percent before the war to an average of 45 percent for 50 years thereafter reflected a Northern war aim. They hold Southern secession responsible for the war, but fail to teach that the Northeastern states threatened to secede five times between 1789 and 1850. They also decline to note that Southern secession need not have led to war. Southerners had no purpose to overthrow the Washington government; they merely wanted a government of their own. Northerners could have evacuated Fort Sumter and let the first seven cotton-states depart in peace, thereby avoiding the war.Modern historians normally focus on the reasons the cotton-states seceded, instead of examining the economic reasons Northerners chose to militarily coerce them back into the Union, thereby inaugurating civil war.The Republican party could have stopped the spread of slavery peacefully by endorsing popular sovereignty during the presidential election of 1860. After Kansas used it to reject slavery in an local-option vote in 1858, nearly every politico realized that the doctrine would quarantine slavery in the South. If popular sovereignty could not make a slave state out of Kansas, it could not do it to any of the remaining federal territories of 1860. Republicans rejected the doctrine simply to survive as an independent party because Lincoln’s main two opposing presidential candidates supported it. Beyond what poplar sovereignty would have gained, the Republican blanket-ban on slaves in the territories added nothing except to inflame the sectional passions that led to civil war. ungekürzt. What did Abraham Lincoln envision when he talked about "reconstruction"? Assassinated in 1865, the president did not have a chance to begin the work of reconciling the North and South nor to oversee reconstruction as an official postwar strategy. Yet his final speech, given to thousands gathered in the rain outside the White House on April 11, 1865, gives a clear indication of what Lincoln's postwar policy might have looked like - one that differed starkly from what would emerge in the tumultuous decade that followed. In Lincoln's Last Speech, renowned historian and author Louis P. Masur offers insight into this critical address and its vision of a reconstructed United States. Coming two days after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox and a week after the fall of Richmond, Lincoln's speech was expected to be a victory oration. Instead he looked to the future, discussing how best to restore the seceded states to the national government and even endorsing limited black suffrage. Delving into the language and arguments of Lincoln's last address, Masur traces the theme of reconstruction as it developed throughout his presidency, starting with the very earliest days of the war. Masur illuminates the evolution of Lincoln's thinking and the national debate around reconstruction, touching on key moments such as the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction on December 8, 1863, and Lincoln's pocket veto of the Wade-Davis bill in July 1864. He also examines social reconstruction, including the plight of freed men and the debate over the place of blacks in society, and considers the implications of Lincoln's speech after April 1865, when Andrew Johnson assumed office and the ground was laid for the most radical phases of the postwar policy. A nuanced study of Lincoln's views on national reconciliation, this work gives us a better understanding of the failures that occurred with postwar reconstruction. ungekürzt. Language: English.
