A revelatory history of the operatic masterpiece that both made and destroyed Rouben Mamoulian, its director and unsung hero. "Bring my goat!" Porgy exclaims in the final scene of Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess. Bess, whom he loves, has left for New York City, and he’s determined to find her. When his request is met with astonishment - New York is a great distance from South Carolina’s Catfish Row - Porgy remains undaunted. He mounts his goat-cart and leads the community in an ecstatic finale, "Oh Lawd, I’m on my way." Stephen Sondheim has called "Bring my goat!" "one of the most moving moments in musical theater history." For years it was assumed that DuBose Heyward - the author of the seminal novella and subsequent play, Porgy, and later the librettist for the opera Porgy and Bess - penned this historic line. In fact, both it and "Oh Lawd, I'm on my way" were added to the play eight years earlier by that production’s unheralded architect: Rouben Mamoulian. Porgy and Bess as we know it would not exist without the contributions of this master director. Culling new information from the recently opened Mamoulian Archives at the Library of Congress, award-winning author Joseph Horowitz shows that, more than anyone else, Mamoulian took Heyward's vignette of a regional African-American subculture and transformed it into an epic theater work, a universal parable of suffering and redemption. Part biography, part revelatory history, On My Way re-creates Mamoulian's visionary style on stage and screen, his collaboration with George Gershwin, and the genesis of the opera that changed the face of American musical life. ungekürzt. The different ways that social change happens, from unleashing to nudging to social cascades. "Sunstein's book is illuminating because it puts norms at the center of how we think about change."—David Brooks, The New York Times How does social change happen? When do social movements take off? Sexual harassment was once something that women had to endure; now a movement has risen up against it. White nationalist sentiments, on the other hand, were largely kept out of mainstream discourse; now there is no shortage of media outlets for them. In this book, with the help of behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields, Cass Sunstein casts a bright new light on how change happens. Sunstein focuses on the crucial role of social norms—and on their frequent collapse. When norms lead people to silence themselves, even an unpopular status quo can persist. Then one day, someone challenges the norm—a child who exclaims that the emperor has no clothes; a woman who says "me too.” Sometimes suppressed outrage is unleashed, and long-standing practices fall. Sometimes change is more gradual, as "nudges” help produce new and different decisions—apps that count calories; texted reminders of deadlines; automatic enrollment in green energy or pension plans. Sunstein explores what kinds of nudges are effective and shows why nudges sometimes give way to bans and mandates. Finally, he considers social divisions, social cascades, and "partyism,” when identification with a political party creates a strong bias against all members of an opposing party—which can both fuel and block social change.

Eric has finally reached the end of what he swears must have been the longest semester ever, and this weekend he has plans to celebrate. One of his friends is throwing a costume party, and the prize for most dramatic transformation? Turns out the guy hosting the party has an extra place on the ski trip he always takes over winter. Eric can definitely imagine himself on a snowboard, and he is determined to come up with the ultimate costume. One where no one is going to recognize him. He has always thought he might make a fairly attractive and convincing woman, but to pull this off he is going to need some help....Luckily, he has been chatting with his next-door neighbor, Meredith, for months. Honestly, he has a bit of a crush on her, but she doesn’t seem to respond to his flirting. Still, she seems like his best bet for help with makeup, since she always looks flawless even if she is just gardening in her front yard. Eric asks her for some tips and her face lights up. “Oh I know exactly the thing!” Meredith exclaims. “Come over a few hours before the party, and I’ll help you get ready.”The only issue is that Meredith’s disguise is a little too convincing. Eric wins the prize, but when he wakes up the next morning, he notices something is different. His hips are wider, his skin is softer...his voice has changed. Eric is still Erica, and this is way more than can be explained away with makeup. Erica bangs on Meredith’s door, upset and confused.“When does this wear off?” she demands to know, her voice higher than it was a day ago.“Did I not tell you? It’s sort of...semi-permanent. Like hair dye” Meredith says. “I don’t know why you’re upset though...you’re pretty hot like this.” She smiles up at Erica, who suddenly realizes that maybe there could be a silver lining to this temporary swap.... ungekürzt. A debut EP by a quirky, electro, pop project, Noaccordion, that is spearheaded by the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Onah Indigo. Noaccordion's songs have been described as "full of hooks", "retro yet futuristic" and sounding like "Portishead meets the B52's". Noaccordion questions society about what it tells us not to do and why, while taking you on a wild ride echoing a European Cabaret Show coupled with 80's Pop and 90's Dance sounds. This debut EP was co-produced by Onah Indigo (producer, singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist) and Sean Ingoldsby (producer, engineer, musician). From 2008 to 2010 tucked up in the hills of southern California weekly recording sessions in Sean's red barn took place. Magic occurred as Onah, after many years, finally committed to releasing some of her songs and investing in a good engineer and recording space to do it. Not only did she learn a lot while watching Sean work as an engineer, he also contributed as a producer as well and laid down some great guitar, bass and vocal parts. The project became a creative collaboration with a fusion of styles between Onah and Sean. The name Noaccordion was inspired by a sign Onah saw posted on a building on the Internet that warned of no accordions. Having just been given an accordion, she wondered what raucous behavior must have been happening around that building to cause such an accordion ban. Onah does not like to be told what to do and seeing a sign like that just encourages her to play more music. However, since she started playing the accordion over a year ago she has also witnessed various reactions to accordions. "It seems that people either love them or they can't stand them," exclaims Onah, "I have had people come up to me blissed out by the ethnic, sonic experience and others have begged me to please stop playing that loud thing." Onah's main instrument, the keyboard, has never even generated a ripple in all these years. Noaccordion's main musical influences have been British Electronica, Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Lamb, Massive Attack, Tricky, Cocteau Twins, Propellerheads, Portishead, Drum n Bass, Trip Hop, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Tom Waits, B52's, Bill Withers, X, Stevie Wonder, Thievery Corporation, Air, and Dan the Automator. Onah Indigo is a sonic and visual artist who has been based mainly in Italy, Britain and California, USA.

Bristling with guitar acrobatics and infectious melodies, Minus The Bear's fifth studio full-length album, Infinity Overhead, due September 3rd, is not only a return to form in direction, instrumentation and creation but also the band's most aggressive and confident. The veteran Seattle-based fivesome reunited with former member and longtime producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Cursive) to create a guitar-laden 10-track record that is heavy both on technicality and pop songcraft and showcases the band doing what they do best - interesting, guitar-based big sounding rock. We wanted to branch out on the last record and explore some more musical directions and work with someone we didn't know, says guitarist Dave Knudson about the band's 2010 LP, Omni, produced by Joe Chiccarelli. That was very educational and eye opening but at the same time we weren't in our wheel house. Drummer Erin Tate adds: I look at it like when we started this band we were building a house with the first three records, then with Omni we decided to go to a beach house. Now, with Infinity Overhead, we are back working on our house. Bassist Cory Murchy succinctly exclaims: We didn't go anywhere, but we're back. TRACKS: 01. Steel and Blood 02. Lies and Eyes 03. Diamond Lightning 04. Toska 05. Listing 06. Heaven Is A Ghost Town 07. Empty Party Rooms 08. Zeros 09. Lonely Gun 10. Cold Company

Spottiswoode's UGLY LOVE is fast becoming a cult classic. Poppy and brooding at the same time, UGLY LOVE has been celebrated by critics around the country. The New Yorker calls Spottiswoode 'a genius.' The Washington Post describes the CD as 'beautiful'. 'Gorgeous' exclaims North Carolina's Creative Loafing. 'Reminiscent of the moodiest material by Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits,' states Athens' Flagpole Magazine. 'Low and slinky with mood galore,' says The Charlotte Observer. UGLY LOVE travels a continent of moods and sonic textures. Peter Fox's production combines such colors as accordion, strings, bouzouki, horns, gospel vocals and lap steel guitar. Yet the record remains spare. Front and center is Spottiswoode's 'deep, rough-hewn voice' (New Yorker), and his direct lyrical style. The first two tracks were recently included in TART, starring Dominique Swain, Brad Renfro & Melanie Griffith.
