The Ballad of Reading Gaol , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 33min
Between 1895 and 1897 Oscar Wilde served a prison sentence for offences "of gross indecency". Most of this time was spent at Reading Gaol, where Wilde encountered another prisoner, Harles Thomas Wooldridge, a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards, who had been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. Wooldrige was hanged at the gaol on 7th July, 1896. Wilde wrote the poem in France in 1897 after his release from prison. The first published version identified the author only as C.3.3, the name allocated to Wilde as a prisoner. The poem is a long reflection on the inequity and ineffectiveness of statutory punishment and the redeeming power of the Christian message of forgiveness. In his foreword, Frank Harris wrote: I venture to repeat here what I have said in various ways for nearly twenty years now, that Oscar Wilde's condemnation of prisons and punishment must lead directly to their abolition. The old bad past will die and Oscar Wilde's ballad helped to kill it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Denis Daly. In Bed with Susie Bright 518: Sex Panics and Sex Punishments - Are We Getting Child Protection or a Police State?, Hörbuch, Digital, 32min, (USK 18)
Susie speaks with George Mason University professor Roger Lancaster, author of Sex Panic and the Punitive State, about his recent New York Times op-ed piece entitled "Sex Offenders: The Last Pariahs". Lancester, who has extensively researched the subject, talks to Susie about the harshness and ineffectiveness of sex-offender laws. Guided by panic, we've put more people behind bars - but that hasn't helped to curb or make children safer from sexual predators. Susie and Roger talk about the problems of sex-offender registries and why politicians are such cowards on this issue. Then, in our "Try This at Home" mailbag, Susie hears from a wife with a story and a question. She fills us in on her successful attempt to turn her husband into a swinger… but now she wonders if she's going over the falls. "Help, I can't stop my libido." Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. And you can send your confidential questions - plus requests for free samples and blog banners! - to susie@susiebright.com. Combat Ready?: The Eighth U.S. Army on the Eve of the Korean War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 344min
In the decades since the "forgotten war" in Korea, conventional wisdom has held that the Eighth Army consisted largely of poorly trained, undisciplined troops who fled in terror from the onslaught of the Communist forces. Now, military historian Thomas E. Hanson argues that the generalizations historians and fellow soldiers have used regarding these troops do little justice to the tens of thousands of soldiers who worked to make themselves and their army ready for war. In Hanson's careful study of combat preparedness in the Eighth Army from 1949 to the outbreak of hostilities in 1950, he concedes that the US soldiers sent to Korea suffered gaps in their professional preparation, from missing and broken equipment to unevenly trained leaders at every level of command. But after a year of progressive, focused, and developmental collective training - based largely on the lessons of combat in World War II - these soldiers expected to defeat the Communist enemy. By recognizing the constraints under which the Eighth Army operated, Hanson asserts that scholars and soldiers will be able to discard what Douglas Macarthur called the "pernicious myth" of the Eighth Army's professional, physical, and moral ineffectiveness. ungekürzt. Four Types of Problems , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 288min
When faced with problems, many business leaders and teams look for familiar and standard problem-solving methods, often creating unnecessary struggle, frustration, delay, and ineffectiveness in solving the problem - if it is ever solved at all! In other words, they keep reaching for the same old hammer as if every business problem were a nail.In Four Types of Problems, continuous improvement expert and author Art Smalley shows you how to break the "hammer-and-nail" trap. He demonstrates that most business problems fall into four main categories: TroubleshootingGap from standardTarget stateOpen-ended and innovation"Organizations and individuals at all levels fall into the trap of having one primary or standard way of solving every problem," says Smalley, who learned problem solving from Tomoo Harada at Toyota's historic Kamigo engine plant. Harada led the maintenance activities that created the stability needed for Taiichi Ohno's innovations in the Toyota production system. Each type of problem category requires different thought processes, improvement methods, and management cadences. Each type has its own sub-system and surfacing mechanism, management cadence, timing, and difficulty level, he explained. One size does not fit all. Situations and training people in tools or techniques only scratches the surface of problem solving.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. First Strike: A Brady Hawk Novel, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 339min
Another riveting thriller from award-winning and best-selling author Jack Patterson in a new series about a black ops assassin wreaking havoc on terrorists everywhere. With ruthless terrorist cells multiplying by the day, the head of the snake must be cut off - and Brady Hawk swings a sharp ax. Realizing the ineffectiveness of America's own counter-terrorism unit, Texas senator J.D. Blunt proposes a black ops program that's so off the books that only a handful of people know about it. Given the reins and funding to construct his own organization, Blunt creates Firestorm and recruits one of the most effective operatives the American government has ever known: Brady Hawk. Working with D.C.-based handler Alex Duncan, Hawk learns the location of chief bomb maker for the terrorist group Al Hasib and enters into a race against the clock to eliminate him as well as the man behind the cell before they destroy a key US target. But that's not all Hawk learns. As the son of the world's most renowned weapons manufacturer, Hawk must also come to terms that maybe his father isn't who he thinks he is - and neither is Blunt. This pulse-pounding thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat until the very last shot is fired. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dwight Kuhlman.
