Jainism arose as a systematic response to human and animal violence by positing a radical alternative - the path of ahimsa or non-violence. Their argument is a simple but profound one. If we can lessen the pain and suffering of those around us, why not choose that option instead of needlessly perpetuating the never-ending cycle of violent retribution? Jainism raises a most pregnant question for all of us: how big is our circle of compassion? Can we extend its circumference beyond our selves and ken to include other human beings not of our tribe and even further to include animals and other living beings? In those brief moments where we almost instinctively lash out others, can we instead pause and change our responses? The Jains believe that we can and have demonstrated over hundreds of years of how it can be ecologically and ethically successful. This book is a brief introduction to the Jain religion, including a close look at its inception and how it evolved over time to its present day status. Special attention will be given to how Jain ideals such as ahimsa and anekantavada (the doctrine of non one-sidedness) can serve as a much needed and welcome panacea to the world's strife and misery. Although Jainism is perhaps the smallest of the world's religions, what it has to offer humankind is of inestimable value. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Feather. Ganesha also known more commonly in the west as Ganesh, is one of the most beloved, if not the most beloved deities in Hinduism. He is best known for his ability to help people remove obstacles in their lives. Although this I my first book on Ganesh, I have taught people the Ganesh mantras and they have used it with great success. I have received several emails stating that the Ganesh mantra added that extra spark they needed in their lives. Not only did it take their mantra work to a new level, some also used it in conjunction with western magick and he came through for them. Ganesh has an elephant head and this fact makes him very easy to recognize. However, what he is most known for his willingness and ability to help people remove obstacles in their lives. In addition to that, he is also a patron of the arts and sciences and has been known to help people with these fields as well. He is so effective that his worship can be found outside of Hinduism as well. Jains and Buddhists are also known to have devotion towards him. Although I do not have a main practice to Ganesh, I have used his power several times and can attest to his efficacy as can so many people not only in my sphere but the millions around the world. ungekürzt. Jain Ramayäa Narratives: Moral Vision and Literary Innovation traces how and why Jain authors at different points in history rewrote the story of Rama and situates these texts within larger frameworks of South Asian religious history and literature. The book argues that the plot, characters, and the very history of Jain Rama composition itself served as a continual font of inspiration for authors to create and express novel visions of moral personhood. In making this argument, the book examines three versions of the Rama story composed by two authors, separated in time and space by over 800 years and thousands of miles. The first is Ravi¿e¿a, who composed the Sanskrit Padmapuräa ("The Deeds of Padma"), and the second is Brahma Jinadasa, author of both a Sanskrit Padmapuräa and a vernacular (bhäa) version of the story titled Ram Ras ("The Story of Ram"). While the three compositions narrate the same basic story and work to shape ethical subjects, they do so in different ways and with different visions of what a moral person actually is. A close comparative reading focused on the differences between these three texts reveals the diverse visions of moral personhood held by Jains in premodernity and demonstrates the innovative narrative strategies authors utilized in order to actualize those visions. The book is thus a valuable contribution to the fields of Jain studies and religion and literature in premodern South Asia.

Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Today the subcontinent contains 20 percent of the world's population and is a thriving center for global business, making this region one of most significant economic powerhouses in the world. Go inside this thrilling story with A History of India, a breathtaking survey of South Asia from its earliest societies along the Indus and Ganges rivers through the modern challenges of the 21st century. These 36 sweeping lectures enable you to understand the epic scope of the subcontinent's history. Perhaps the most important facet of this history is how diverse the region truly is. Roughly the size of continental Europe, India - along with its neighbors, Pakistan and Bangladesh - contains a myriad of ethnic groups, socioeconomic classes, religions, and cultural mores. In this wide-ranging investigation, you'll: Meet the many religious communities that have coexisted in India, including Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians Delve into the legacies of the Mauryan Empire, the Mughal Empire, and British colonialism - three of the few governments that ever unified the subcontinent Witness the fight for independence from European powers and the partition of the region into the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in the 20th century Consider the challenges and opportunities faced by this area today, from expanding urbanization to the vast need for energy sources to the ongoing heated debates about national identity Professor Fisher, who has traveled and taught in South Asia for decades, reveals this complex narrative with skill and compelling insights.
