    Kommando zurück. SAGA lösen sich nicht auf. Was im Januar 2017 noch wie ein offizieller Abschied klang, ist Geschichte. Es war lediglich ein Missverständnis, sagt Michael Sadler, Sänger der Neo-Progrocker: ?Wir wollten bloß aus dem üblichen, jahrzehntelangen Album-Tour-Album-Rhythmus heraus. Nach über 40 Jahren war es an der Zeit, ein wenig Luft zu holen. Wir sind glücklicherweise in der Lage, uns auszusuchen, wann wir spielen wollen. Es muss Spaß machen und sich nicht wie ein Job anfühlen, auf die Bühne gehen zu müssen. Dabei geht es auch nicht um Geld. Wir haben nie konkret formuliert, dass wir uns auflösen werden, dazu sind wir auch noch immer viel zu kreativ.? Und füllen auch hierzulande vor allem noch immer die Hallen. Zuletzt in diesem Sommer. Deutschland und SAGA, das ist eine Verbindung, die schon von Beginn an eine besondere war. Sadler spricht nicht umsonst von ?unserer zweiten Heimat?, der 65-Jährige lebte in den Neunzigern sogar einige Jahre lang in Saarbrücken. Gitarrist Ian Crichton, neben seinem Bruder Jim (b) und Sadler Gründungsmitglieder der Kanadier, wird in einem Interview sogar zitiert, für SAGA habe ?alles in Deutschland angefangen?. Sadler weiß auch, warum: ?Die zahlreichen TV-Auftritte und der Gig bei ?Rock am Ring? 1985 waren sicherlich ein Grund dafür, warum wir in Deutschland unsere gesamte Karriere lang so erfolgreich gewesen sind. Aber natürlich darf man die allererste Tour im Juni 1980 im Vorprogramm mit Styx nicht vergessen. Deutschland war das erste Land, das uns mit offenen Armen empfangen hat. Nicht zu vergessen Puerto Rico, wo wir ebenfalls richtig erfolgreich sind.? Unterschiedlicher könnten ihre Hochburgen nicht sein, einen Grund dafür kann Sadler auch nicht benennen: ?Am Anfang ist es doch so, dass man eine Band gründet, Songs schreibt, sie aufnimmt und auf den Markt bringt. Dann hofft man, dass sie irgendjemanden interessieren. Und in den beiden Ländern war und ist das der Fall.? Es gibt Theorien, der damalige Wechselkurs des kanadischen Dollar habe die Importe nach Europa so billig gemacht, aber Sadler wiegelt ab: ?Das mag ein Grund gewesen sein, aber letztendlich haben wir so viele Importe verkauft, dass Polydor damals gar nicht anders konnten, als uns unter Vertrag zu nehmen. Dasselbe passierte in Puerto Rico, wobei dort die Live-Präsenz entscheidender war.? Davon konnten sich auch die Zuschauer der Styx-Tour im Sommer 1980 überzeugen. Sadler erinnert sich noch gut an die erste Show in Nürnberg am 5.6.in der Hemmerleinhalle: ?Unser Manager hatte uns vorher gesagt, dass wir schon viele Fans in Deutschland hätten; für die war das Package natürlich musikalisch ein Traum, beide Bands passten gut zueinander. Ich war nervös an dem Abend, denn wir hatten eine Setlist, die mit Ice Nice begann. Du spielst das erste Mal in einem Land und fängst mit einem, zumindest in der ersten Hälfte, langsamen Song an. Aber es hat funktioniert. Der Styx-Manager stand auf der Bühne neben unserem und meinte nach der Show, als wir Standing Ovations bekamen, dass das Ganze wohl nicht funktionieren würde. Die Band sei zu gut. Da wusste ich, dass sich alle Mühen vorher gelohnt hatten und wir eine Zukunft haben.? In der haben SAGA dann weltweit bis heute von ihren 21 Studio- und 9 Live-Alben 10 Millionen Exemplare verkauft und über 1000 Konzerte in Nord- und Südamerika und Europa gespielt. Und das Ende ist nicht in Sicht. Ein anderer Grund für die enorm loyale Fan-Basis in Deutschland waren auch die von Sadler erwähnten TV-Shows; in einer Prä-Internet-Zeit, in der MTV noch nicht so präsent war und Rock-Konzerte im TV Ausnahmen darstellten. Neben dem ARD-?Rockpalast? waren es vor allem die ?Rock Pop In Concert?-Aufzeichnungen im ZDF, die für Furore sorgten. Die Sendung vom 19.12.1981 mit Foreigner, Meat Loaf, Spliff und eben SAGA gilt als eine dieser Sternstunden der Rockhistorie hierzulande. ?Wir mussten als letzte auf die Bühne, hatten eine knappe Stunde und die haben wir genutzt. Danach war alles anders.? Ändern würde er im Nachhinein bis auf sein damaliges Outfit (Lockenkopf, Schnurrbart) nichts, schmunzelt der inzwischen kahlköpfige Sänger. ?Mein elfjähriger Sohn hat mir alle meine Veränderungen in den letzten 40 Jahren verziehen, aber mein Aussehen damals mag er überhaupt nicht?, lacht er. Was sich ebenfalls nicht geändert hat, ist Sadlers Stimme. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Sängern seines Alters klingt der 65-Jährige wie vor 40 Jahren. Woran liegt das? ?Ich habe im Kirchenchor angefangen, benutze eher Bauch- statt Kopfstimme. Zweitens bin ich Alkoholiker und seit 19 Jahren trocken. Seit meinem letzten Drink ist die Stimme noch besser geworden. warum auch immer. Das Ganze sehe ich als Segen, der mir ermöglicht, meinen Traumjob auch noch im Rentenalter auszuüben. Wer kann das schon von sich behaupten? Ich reise durch Länder, die viele niemals sehen werden und werde noch dafür bezahlt!? Er habe niemals den Respekt vor dem Glück verloren, das er mit SAGA im Laufe der langen Karriere gehabt habe. Er mag das Touren und die damit verbundene Routine noch immer, aber ?wenn man zu lange von der Familie getrennt ist, macht es keinen Spaß.? Das sei auch der Grund für seinen zeitweiligen Ausstieg 2007 gewesen, er wollte seinen Sohn aufwachsen sehen. ?Ich hätte sonst zu viele erste Male verpasst.? Von denen hat er mit SAGA allerdings auch einige erlebt: Original-SAGA-Drummer Steve Negus war einer der populären Pioniere der elektronischen Simmons-Drums, ohne die die Achtziger-Popmusik wohl niemals so geklungen hätte; SAGA spielten am 14.2.1982 in Budapest als erste kanadische Band überhaupt in einem Ostblockland; das teilweise in München mitgeschnittene Live-Album ?In Transit? von 1982 war das erste digital aufgenommene (Produzent: Dieter Dierks); SAGA waren eine der Hauptattraktionen des allerersten ?Rock am Ring?-Festivals am 26.5.1985; SAGA starteten ihre ?Heads Or Tales?-Tour am 29.9.1983 in Suhl/DDR, der Gig wurde komplett im TV übertragen. ?Damals haben wir dort drei Tage für die Europatour geprobt. Ich konnte nicht glauben, wie anders die DDR damals war. Die Fans haben unseren Müll nach Coca Cola-Dosen durchwühlt, weil sie keine westlichen Produkte bekamen. Wir hatten von den Zuständen gehört, aber wenn du es mit deinen eigenen Augen siehst, ist das schon beeindruckend.? Apropos: Ein weiteres historisches Datum deutscher Geschichte konnten SAGA ebenfalls live erleben: ?Wir waren in Berlin am 9.11.1989, als die Mauer fiel. Wir alle konnten kleine Stücke davon mit nach Hause nehmen. Das werde ich nie vergessen.? Ein weiteres einschneidendes Erlebnis für Sadler waren die Arbeiten an Ozzy Osbournes Album ?No Rest For The Wicked? 1988. ?Der Produzent Keith Olson hatte ursprünglich Howard Kaylan und Mark Volman, die beiden Sänger der 60er-Popband The Turtles, vorgesehen, aber das klappte nicht. Da Jims Studio nebenan lag, fragte er mich, ob ich einspringen könnte. Also habe ich dann Texte wie Crazy Babies gesungen; es dauerte 2 oder 3 Tage. Ein Job, für den ich viel Geld, aber keine Credits auf dem Album bekommen habe.? Bei SAGA liegt die Sache anders: Es ist eben kein Beruf, sondern eine Berufung für Sadler, jeden Abend mit den Crichton-Brüdern, Keyboarder Jim Gilmour und Drummer Mike Thorne auf der Bühne zu stehen. Der Lohn dafür sei nicht das Geld, sondern eine Bezahlung der anderen Art: ?Wenn du nach einem Konzert von einer 17-Jährigen angesprochen wirst, die von ihrem Vater seit ihrem sechsten Lebensjahr auf SAGA-Konzerte mitgenommen wird und die jeden Song deiner Band kennt, dann musst du etwas richtig gemacht haben, oder?? Aus diesem Grund wird es auch zur kommenden Tour im Frühjahr 2020 ein neues Album von SAGA geben, allerdings möchte Sadler noch nichts Genaues dazu sagen, außer ?dass das aufmerksame deutsche Publikum schon wissen wird, wovon ich spreche.? Diese Loyalität wird belohnt, alle letzten neun SAGA-Alben landeten in den oberen Rängen der deutschen Charts, das letzte, ?Sagacity? (2014) auf Platz 17, der Vorgänger ?20/20? (2012) auf Platz 13. ?Es scheint, dass wir in den letzten Jahren eine Art Renaissance widerfahren haben, dass unsere Musik auf einmal von vielen wieder neu entdeckt und gewürdigt wird. Wahrscheinlich liegt es daran, dass wir live noch nie so gut waren.? Warum sich also auflösen? Sollte es doch passieren, wie möchte Sadler seine Band erinnert wissen? ?Wir waren ehrlich zum Publikum und zu uns, haben keine Kompromisse, nie Musik um der Charts willen gemacht. Ich höre auf, wenn es sich wie ein Job anfühlt, auf die Bühne zu gehen. Musik werde ich aber bis zum Ende machen, denn das ist das, was mich ausmacht.?
