The Tailor of Panama, Hörbuch, Digital, 359min
Le Carre's Panama is a Casablanca without heroes, a hotbed of drugs, laundered money and corruption. It is also the country which on December 31, 1999, will gain full control of the Panama Canal. Seldom has the weight of politics descended so heavily on such a tiny and unprepared nation. And seldom has the hidden eye of the British Intelligence selected such an unlikely champion as Harry Pendel - a charmer, a dreamer, an evader, a fabulist and presiding genius to the house of Pendel & Braithwaite Co. Limitada, Tailors to Royalty, formerly of London and presently of Panama City. Yet there is a logic to the spies' choice, for everybody who is anybody in Cental America passes through Pendel's doors. He dresses politicos and crooks and conmen. His fitting room hears more confidences than the priest's confessional. And when Harry Pendel doesn't hear things as such - well, he hears them anyway, by other means. In a thrilling, hilarious AudioBook, le Carre once again effortlessly expands the borders of the spy story to bring us a magnificent entertainment straight out of the pages of tomorrow's history. But what seems the coldest of cold cases roars back to life when one of the central figures in this mystery is shot to death, right after speaking with Gunther. And when a young police officer - the son of VBI investigator Lester Spinney - is kidnapped, is it meant to be a warning to the VBI team to drop the case? The Roots of Reno , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 445min
Reno was truly “Hell on Wheels” in the 1920's. The rest of the nation considered the town Sodom and Gomorra, but that's only half the truth. Reno offered everything in the way of adult entertainment, from speakeasies and houses of ill-repute, to open gaming - legal or not. And it took plenty of sins by the founding fathers to make Reno “The biggest little city in the world.” When the gold-veins of Tonopah and Goldfield ran out, the casino owners moved to Reno, where even greater riches awaited. Together, a group of four men (Nick Abelman, Bill Graham, Jim McKay, George Wingfield) took over Reno's casinos and held sway over the town for the next three decades. Together, they administered policy, collected juice, ran politicians, and owned the red-light district and most of the town's casinos. When that wasn't enough they took over the banks and laundered money for crooks like “Pretty Boy” Floyd, Alvin Karpis, and Ma Barker's boys, and offered safety to “Baby Face” Nelson. It was a good gig. The Reno Four dictated policy all over northern Nevada, taking special care of Reno and Lake Tahoe casinos up until the late 1950's. Their influence made Reno before Bill Harrah or “Pappy” Smith ever arrived, needing an introduction and permission to build their own casinos, Harold's Club and Harrah's.. ungekürzt. Finding Penelope , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 365min
Thirty-three-year-old romance novelist Penelope Eames moves to Spain to avoid her oppressive father and drug-addicted brother, Dermot. When she meets Ramon, a young Spanish school teacher, she is immediately attracted to him and feels the happiness that eluded her all her life may at last be hers. However, she receives a distress call from Dermot saying he is at the mercy of Charlie Eliot, a pimp and drug dealer on the Costa. Ramon, whose mother was killed by a drug addict, tells her to have nothing to do with Charlie Eliot. Penelope must decide: Is she prepared to compromise herself with Charlie Eliot and jeopardize her chance of happiness with Ramon for the sake of her drug-addicted brother? Author's note: Apart from casting a wry glance at the phenomenon of chick-lit and treating of the role of patriarchy in a family, the novel Finding Penelope is essentially a love story marking a growth in self-realization in the protagonist Penelope Eames. It delves into the drug culture and its associated criminality in Spain (where a lot of Celtic Tiger money wound up laundered), Ireland, and the UK. The prompt for the novel was from Cervantes, and a motif may be interpreted as a sort of modern-day parallel of Don Quijote's attack on the proliferation of romance novels of that time. As 70 percent of fans are now female, I wanted to understand more of the female mindset. So I picked the brains of women of my acquaintance, including two adult daughters, and I researched contemporary women writers and books like Everywoman, and I reread with new female (or at least androgynous eyes) my well-thumbed de Beauvoir, Anna Karenina, and Portrait of a Lady. Simultaneously, I was studying the crime culture on the Costa. The result was the character Penelope Eames. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sarah Brady. The Black Sox Scandal: The History and Legacy of America's Most Notorious Sports Controversy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 73min
The 1919 World Series was one that baseball fans would never forget, but the memories are hardly fond. The Chicago White Sox were favored 5:1 to beat the Cincinnati Reds, and for the first time since 1903, the Series would be a best-of-nine format. However, at a time when players were treated as second class, some sought a payday beyond what they made in the leagues, and the White Sox players were some of the most poorly paid in the league. The owner of the team, Charles A. Comiskey, was one of the cheapest owners in the game, too cheap to pay to have the team's uniforms laundered after games. Around two weeks before the World Series was set to begin, Chicago first baseman Chick Gandil met with a gambler in his Boston hotel room. During that meeting, Gandil told Joseph Sullivan that for $100,000, he and other members of the White Sox were willing to take a dive and make sure that the Reds won the World Series. Gandil was able to convince the team's top two pitchers to go along with the plan, as well as five other players, and gamblers came up with the money, including the famous New York City mobster Arnold Rothstein. With that, the plan to throw the World Series was put in motion, and rumors began to spread around the country prior to the start of the series as gamblers wagered large sums of money on the Reds. In the end, the press had a field day, calling for justice in a series that was clearly fixed, and eight players would be charged: Eddie Cicotte, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Charles "Swede" Risberg, George "Buck" Weaver, and Claude "Lefty" Williams. Though they were all acquitted in court, the players were banned from baseball for life, and the Black Sox Scandal has continued to be well-known nearly a century later, and it has given rise to all sorts of legends. Ironically, Shoeless Joe Jackson is the most famous Black Sox player even as historians continue to debate whether ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman.
