False Prophets , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 692min
The Gurus Who Created Modern Management and Why Their Ideas Are Bad for Business TodayHere is a critical reassessment of the ideas that shaped modern management. According to Jim Hoopes, the fundamental principles on which business is based - authority, power, control - are increasingly at odds with principles of life in a democratic society - freedom, equality, and individualism. False Prophets critically examines the pioneering theories of the early management thinkers, such as Taylor, Follett, Mayo, and Deming, who intended to democratize corporate life yet have proved antithetical to the successful practice of business. Hoopes challenges popular management movements that followed in the wake of these thinkers and accuses today's business theorists of perpetuating bad management in the name of democratic values. He urges executives and managers to recognize the realities of corporate life and learn to apply the principles of power. He also unveils a new management agenda that will be of paramount significance to modern organizations.A rich and lively read, False Prophets provides a refreshingly new and original overview of the history of management in the larger context of the American culture, brilliantly illustrating its evolution - from the ivory tower to the shop floor. ungekürzt. Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 334min
The cofounder of Code Pink has become famous for fearlessly tackling head-on subjects most of us studiously avoid. Sometimes, she does so in person - as during President Obama's speech at the National Defense University, or during a reception for drone manufacturers and members of Congress, or in Cairo, where she was assaulted by police. Here, she's researching the sinister nature of the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia. In seven succinct chapters followed by a meditation on prospects for change, Medea Benjamin - cited by the LA Times as “[O]ne of the high-profile members of the peace movement” - shines a light on one of the most perplexing elements of American foreign policy. What is the origin of this strange alliance between two countries that seemingly have very little in common? Why does it persist, and what are its consequences? Why, over a period of decades and across various presidential administrations, has the US consistently supported a regime shown time and again to be one of the most powerful forces working against American interests? Saudi Arabia is perhaps the single most important source of funds for terrorists worldwide, promoting an extreme interpretation of Islam along with anti-Western sentiment while brutally repressing nonviolent dissidents at home. With extremism spreading across the globe, a reduced US need for Saudi oil, and a thawing of US relations with Iran, the time is right for a re-evaluation of our close ties with the Saudi regime. ungekürzt. Tales of The Grand Tour, Hörbuch, Digital, 192min
Six-time Hugo Award winner Bova likes to tell big stories in a small way. This approach both helps and hurts in this collection of stories, excerpts and outtakes from his "Grand Tour" novels (Saturn, etc.), which explore the colonization of the solar system. Despite his vast subject, Bova focuses tightly on the heroes and villains whose striving makes up his future history. While some characters are standards of the SF genre (megalomaniac capitalist, lone-wolf entrepreneur, love object caught between them), Bova imbues each with Homeric virtues and flaws. Plus, he can slip convention to present a tale of a crippled circus performer regaining his balance from a visit to the lower-gravity moon ("The Man Who Hated Gravity"), or an account of unrequited love of a stunt double about to free-fall through Venus's skies ("High Jump"). Like a folksy astrophysicist, Bova delights in talking about outer space, from the surface of Venus (hot enough to melt aluminum!) through the asteroid belt (four times farther from the sun than Earth!) to the depths of Jupiter (a beach ball squashed down by an invisible child!). His excitement at being there matches his gusto for the dirty deeds done in the name of love, honor and duty. Less happily, the volume reveals his occasional repetitive prose, hidden across the novels. Similarly, the differing backstories of the novels sit uneasily next to each other. Still, his stories offer glimpses of the human side of space, the heroic grins and tragic grimaces alike. Language: English.
