Miles Jupp stars as James Boswell in four fantastic episodes of Jon Canter's BBC Radio 4 comedy. James Boswell, Dr Johnson's celebrated biographer, turns time traveller to pursue other legends to immortalise in this award-winning comedy series. Hampered by his own pomposity and self-importance, he finds that his subjects get the better of him - with hilarious consequences. Interviewing Sigmund Freud, Boswell is wrong-footed when Freud asks all the questions and on meeting Maria Callas (and her poodle) he becomes caught up in an opera of his own making. While talking to Harold Pinter he finds himself the victim of a betrayal and Boris Johnson proves to be a formidable opponent - especially on the whiff-whaff table. Written by acclaimed comedy author Jon Canter, this hugely entertaining series won the Prix Europa for Best European Radio Series of the Year. It stars Miles Jupp as Boswell, with Henry Goodman as Freud, Arabella Weir as Callas, Harry Enfield as Pinter and Alistair McGowan as Boris Johnson. Language: English. If you want to discover the captivating life of Tiberius, then pay attention....Compared with the preceding rulers, Julius Caesar and Augustus, the name does not ring out with the same fame and pomposity. Shakespeare wrote no plays about Tiberius; his name does not echo in the history books with the same awe-inspiring prominence. Even his successors, Caligula and Nero, are more famous than he was. In fact, Tiberius can hardly be called famous at all. History knows him more for his infamy.Tiberius is remembered, if he is remembered at all, for his bad behavior. He spent much of his rule on a Greek island surrounded by every pleasure that his diseased flesh could dream of, abandoning his empire to scandal and intrigue. He is a great villain of Roman history. In Tiberius: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Ancient Rome's Second Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire, you will discover topics such as:Before the EmperorsBorn into TurmoilThe Eye of the EmperorIn the Shadow of AugustusFirst ConquestForced MarriageRock BottomAscensionA Slippery Slope to CapriThe Last JavelinAnd Much, Much More!So if you want to learn more about Tiberius, scroll up and click the "Buy" button! ungekürzt. Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve was a popular character appearing each week on the Fibber McGee and Molly radio show. On August 31, 1941, Gildersleeve landed his own situation comedy, The Great Gildersleeve, becoming radio's first spin-off. Gildersleeve moved from the town of Wistful Vista, where Fibber McGee and Molly lived, to Summerfield, where he oversaw his late brother-in-law's estate and took on the rearing of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie and Leroy Forrester. The household also included a cook named Birdie. The Great Gildersleeve was the first show to center on a single parent balancing child-rearing, work, and a social life, and it was accomplished with taste and genuine wit, often at the expense of Gildersleeve's slightly understated pomposity. Radio veteran Hal Peary originated the role of Gildersleeve and performs here in these 12 episodes that aired from December 1947 to March 1948: "New Year's Eve Party"; "Anne Tuttle's Back in Town"; "Marjorie's New Romance"; "School Board Election"; "License Plate Time"; "Acting Mayor"; "Getting Glasses"; "Leila's Cousin Arrives in Town"; "Adeline Is Trying to Steal Birdie"; "Girl Shy Leroy"; "The Duel"; "Adeline Wants to Visit the Jolly Boys". Here's one of radio's greatest comic rivalries: the blustery W. C. Fields facing off against the impudent Charlie McCarthy! You'll also hear Don Ameche, Dorothy Lamour, Nelson Eddy, and some guy named Edgar Bergen! The pomposity of Fields' comic persona clashes spectacularly with Charlie's, the foe of the haughty and the self-absorbed, in their no-holds-barred feud. Before and after their battles, the more composed Bergen plays host to a variety of guest stars, including Carole Lombard, Hoagy Carmichael, Rodgers & Hart, and more. These nine digitally remastered episodes feature Fields' first and last appearances as a regular cast member and his last appearance as a guest. Episodes Include: Guests: Ann Harding, Rodgers & Hart, 05-09-37; Guest: Carole Lombard, 05-16-37; Guests: Josephine Hutchinson and Jose Iturbi, 05-30-37; Guests: Zazu Pitts and Hoagy Carmichael, 07-04-37; Guest: Gladys George, 07-11-37; Guests: Alice Brady and Allan Jones, 08-15-37; W. The year is 1911 when 20-year-old heiress Peggy Batternberg is invited to spend the summer in America’s Playground. The invitation to Coney Island is unwelcome. Despite hailing from one of America’s richest families, Peggy would much rather spend the summer working at the Moonrise Bookstore than keeping up appearances with New York City socialites and her snobbish, controlling family. But soon, it transpires that the hedonism of Coney Island affords Peggy the freedom she has been yearning for, and it’s not long before she finds herself in love with a troubled pier-side artist of humble means, whom the Batternberg patriarchs would surely disapprove of. Disapprove they may, but hidden behind their pomposity lurks a web of deceit, betrayal, and deadly secrets. And as bodies begin to mount up amidst the sweltering clamor of Coney Island, it seems the powerful Batternbergs can get away with anything...even murder. Extravagant, intoxicating, and thumping with suspense, best-selling Nancy Bilyeau’s magnificent Dreamland is a story of corruption, class, and dangerous obsession.Praise for the book:"Achingly believable." (Publishers Weekly)"This fast-paced, engrossing novel from Bilyeau...gives readers an up-close and personal view of New York’s Gilded Age." (Library Journal)"Beautifully written and impeccably researched, Dreamland is a rollicking ride." (Fiona Davis, best-selling author of The Chelsea Girls)"A marvelous book!" The Tower of Babel is arguably among the most well-known allegories of the Old Testament. As told by the Book of Genesis, the story revolves around a post-flood batch of Noah's descendants who dwelled in Babylon's Mesopotamia, a city erected by King Nimrod. The population multiplied rapidly over the years, and the city's inhabitants fostered the growth of their culture and enhancing the infrastructure of their territories, made easier by the existence of only one common language. Naturally, the pride of the Mesopotamian residents burgeoned, but their contentment, poisoned by their greed and ambition, began to decline. The only way to prevail over this slump, believed a particularly enterprising group of individuals, was to construct a colossal ziggurat (a “rectangular, stepped tower”) that would ascend past the clouds and into the heavens. With this tower, they intended to “make a name for” mankind and the untouchable abilities of mere mortals, thereby severing their relationship with God, their creator, for good. According to the Bible, God was far from impressed, and to add insult to injury, the architects behind this attempt deliberately opted for man-made materials, such as brick and tar, rather than stone, timber, and other natural building blocks gifted to them by God. The overblown pomposity and conceit of his subjects had to be ceased at once, lest they stray further away from him. Thus, as the people slept, God reached down and scooped up handfuls of the slumbering Mesopotamians and strewed them across the continents, creating 70 different nations and tribes. When they awoke, the bewildered residents of the newly birthed nations were speaking in different tongues. With the architects scattered around the globe and now unable to understand one another, construction of the partially built ziggurat came screeching to a halt. It was later dubbed the “Tower of Babel”, or the “Tower of Confusion”. This miserable monument, which served as a haunting remi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. The star and creative force behind Mr. Show and Arrested Development pens his "first and final book, chronicling his meteoric rise and abysmal fall in the literary world." After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show with Bob and David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended PC left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self. Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book-a historical first (presumably)! With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-10 list of top-10 lists, I Drink for a Reason is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.  ungekürzt. After putting out releases from the likes of UK rave legend Warlock and Baltimore rapper Rye Rye produced by Bullion, Dave Maclean of Django Django's Kick + Clap label announces Tom Furse's Run To Me suite with Because Music, due out 9th October. On Run To Me Furse has mapped out the EP as one opus divided into five cohesive parts. Referencing early techno it has one foot in Cologne and the other in Detroit, with its tightly worked, precise machino-florescence, condensed and upfront, and free of the pomposity that abounds in the genre. A sound enamored with Kraftwerk, Juan Atkins and Yello, it underpins a latent narrative on themes of love, machines and obliteration. Furse elaborated further on the inspiration behind the EP: When I sit down in the studio I'm not always sure where it's going to go, really I just have that drive to create and I use that to explore sounds that interest me. It's a release of energy, no agenda, just expression. The driving visual idea behind this EP was very Sci Fi-based, I had this notion of robots being called to arms (run to me) by a mother robot, in order to collect suns to build a giant engine powered by 20,000 suns. I know it's not really apparent in the songs, but visual ideas like that drive me forward when I'm making music, it just seems to make it easier, like putting sound to film. Continuing a stint on NTS as well as remixing for the likes of Sebastian Tellier, Django Django & Connan Mockasin, Furse's ability to maintain a frenetic work rate with a steady lack of concern about genre and readymade platforms or avenues of thought, means the future is a tantalizing prospect for The Horrors man turned solo artist.
