The second volume of Adler’s New York stories in which all the heartache, joy, pain, and anguish of the Big Apple zeitgeist comes to life. These unforgettable stories will make you laugh and cry as a remarkable parade of characters pursue their busy lives in the greatest city on earth.  Acclaimed author Warren Adler focuses his laser eye on New York City in these 21 vividly rendered short stories, revealing New York as the heartbeat of America, where creativity resides in every nook and cranny and energy pulsates through its pavements and infuses its denizens, inveterate New Yorkers. In a continuation of New York Echoes 1, Adler’s themes in New York Echoes 2 deal primarily with intimate human relationships - the mysterious nature of love and attraction, the fragile bonds between husbands and wives and parents and children; the divide between generations; the obsessive pursuit of the creative artist and the emotional toll it exacts.  In these stories, past memories collide with present realities, and chance encounters have unexpected consequences. All of the hallmarks of Adler’s fiction are at play in New York Echoes 2 and delivered through these powerful stories that reflect a special understanding of the human condition as seen through the eyes of one of America’s most prolific authors. Above all, these radiant tales are a celebration of the short story and of an author’s return to his much-loved, dearly missed native city. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bryan Ken. From an audacious new talent, The Story of H describes a searing quest by a Japanese woman and an American soldier to find a girl who goes missing in the aftermath of Hiroshima, a journey that spans the globe and travels to the darkest corners of the human mind and memory August 6, 1945: the day Enola Gay unleashed an atomic inferno over Hiroshima. In the wake of its devastation, two stories unfold. There’s Jim, an American soldier who was entrusted with taking care of Yoro, a Japanese girl who then disappears after the atomic bomb falls. And there’s H, a Japanese child who is at school when the bomb drops and is indelibly marked by its destruction. Both victims of the bomb, H and Jim meet for the first time in New York years later - their paths cross by chance, they fall in love, and together they continue Jim’s search for Yoro. A quixotic 21st century quest to discover what makes us human, from refugee camps to the slave mines of Africa, from Brazil to Borneo, Japan to Mexico, it’s also a journey that plumbs the depths and heights of cruelty and compassion, vulnerability and violence.  Marina Perezagua’s urgent, incantatory, and highly original novel moves us beyond our understanding of history as broad and sweeping to the individual stories of those who feel joy and pain, who suffer and transcend. Both dazzling and dark, The Story of H pulsates with a terrible beauty and power that lingers with the listener long after the last sentence. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Shiromi Arserio. ‘It was a sweet finish after the bitter pills of floggings and bullets with which these same governments, just at that time, dosed the German working-class risings’. The Communist Manifesto is, perhaps surprisingly, a most engaging and accessible work, containing even the odd shaft of humour in this translation by Samuel Moore for the 1888 English edition. It is, of course, an essential introduction to the thoughts and theories of Karl Marx and his collaborator and editor Friedrich Engels and therefore to the development of communism. This brief but iconoclastic work, essentially a pamphlet, covers the history of the bourgeoisie, aspects of ‘class struggle’ with descriptions and analyses of numerous workers’ parties and movements up to the 1840s. It predicts and elaborates upon the defeat of capitalism and communism’s ultimate global victory. Written over 150 years ago it pulsates with energy, insight and contemporary relevance, ending with the rallying cry, ‘Workers of the World Unite.’ Greg Wagland, a history graduate and enthusiast, brings a certain freshness and energy to his reading of this far from dusty tome. A word about the narrator: born in Oxford, England, Greg Wagland is a classically trained actor, who attended St. Andrews University and drama school. He has worked in television, radio and theatre appearing in productions with the likes of Richard E. Grant, Penelope Keith, Bill Pertwee, Matt Smith, Roger Allam, Liza Goddard, Michael Denison, Dulcie Gray and Lindsay Duncan. He has recorded over 50 audiobooks, a number of those for the well-respected Talking Book Service of the RNIB. Now for Magpie Audio he is putting together an eclectic collection of classic fiction and non-fiction works and is always happy to receive suggestions for new titles. ungekürzt. Language: English. Those who - even just rudimentary - have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald's timeless classics like Domina, M-4 or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, Cocoon Dark Dub is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label. (Sven Väth) So, initially, it's the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance (Bolder), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine (Keep On). With SBooty, the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements. Improvised horn licks are whirring through a flickering resonating body while the bass kick is filling up the tropic ambient air. However, the invariably Cocoon policy to always support interesting newcomers becomes visible in the contribution of Basti Grub from the Rhine Neckar area, whose label Höhenregler is well-known for several musical insider tips in the past. Sick is ascending into your brain immediately with its melodic high-frequency hook line and mysterious vocals, matching perfectly to the melancholic playfulness of the tracks by Guy Gerber. Deep Dish member Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire and the Parisian Popof are the ones to prove impressively that you virtually can't go wrong with stringent Hypno Techno and a diaphragm-shaking bass drum. Besides the above-mentioned, the J compilation holds such well-known producers like Loco Dice, Extrawelt, Reboot and last not least long-time Cocoon companion Ricardo Villalobos, whose 12-minutes-long dance on the echo-filled Humusweg once again draws the bow to the Basic Channel sound from another side, and leaves much room for own visions in between the pulsing metronome of the bass line. In any case, the history of electronic dance music has not been outtold so far. TRACKS: 1. Moritz Von Oswald - Cocoon Dark Dub 2. Basti Grub & Komaton - Sick 3. Pantha Du Prince - Bolder 4. Mathias Kaden - Rave Strikes Back 5. Nick Curly - Keep On 6. DJ Koze - Sbooty 7. Loco Dice - La Bicicletta 8. Dubfire - Rejekt 9. Popof - Roxy 10. Extrawelt - Simpleton 11. This album is a collection of four masterpieces on the classical Indian flute by the legendary Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao. The artist - often known as the foremost exponent of the Indian flute - has imbued the performances with emotions expressing affection for a loving, transcendent entity. The album pulsates with expressions of devotion, passion, playfulness, surprise, a yearning to create, to perpetuate. Of MASTERPIECES: AFFECTION, Panditji has this to say " To me, God is an exquisite ocean of perpetual resonance one feels in all relationships - a father, a mother, brothers and sisters, a teacher, a friend, a beloved. As the Gita says, to those who seek victory, God is statesmanship. Among secrets, God is silence. To an artist like myself, God is the forever truths of life. This album is an expression of love for what is lasting in life, regardless of anything..." Through the past six decades, Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao has shaped and influenced the essential form and derivatives of culture known to the world as classically Indian. It can be authoritatively said that with his performances on the Indian flute in front of audiences worldwide, and recordings thereof, he has interpreted ancient music for modern ears with an understanding that is chaste, and an elocution that stimulates intellects, both mature and young. His genius has also expressed itself in critically acclaimed works for modern orchestral and ballet ensembles. Several award winning features and short films shown at some of the most prestigious international film festivals carry his experimental music. Critics and connoisseurs of his expression in Asia, Europe and America have responded with meaningful praise. To note a few- 'No substitute for his flute...the complete master' - The Hindustan Times "A volcano of creative expression' - The Indian Express "His flute is an unending fountain of myriad melodies, always fresh, always original..." - The Patriot 'Creator of beautiful, wide and ethereal canvasses...' - The Deccan Herald '20th Century Renaissance Genius..' - The Cleveland Plain Dealer 'Intensely romantic...lyrical...extremely serene...' - Rave Magazine "Innovator in the world of music.. a versatile genius.," -The JS Magazine "Seeker of truth through music. One of the greatest flautists of this world" - The Times of India "Reflective music, refreshing and genuinely haunting" - The New York Times "Awe inspiring. Freshness and finesse in every note. Marked by gay abandon, innovativeness and imaginative vitality" - The Statesman "Suave tonicity, lyricism, rich melodic beauty" - The Listening Post Panditji's awards, citations and press have reflected public sentiments of awe and respect for one who has staked new vistas for an ancient tradition, unfettered by a need for acceptance or accolades. He has been bestowed with prestigious honors in India, the United States, the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. In India alone, he has received multiple Sangit Natak Akademi awards, the titles of Sangit Kala Shiromani and Gana Kala Prapoorna, the Gaurav Puraskar, Lifetime Achievement awards and honorary doctorates. In 2002, the Governor of Maryland bestowed Panditji with an honorary citation for his contributions to strengthening cultural ties between India and the United States. In 2008, he received the prestigious Aditya Birla Kala Shikhar (Zenith of Art) award from the Governor of Maharashtra. Panditji's creative works in the realms of dance, orchestral composition and film music are recognized for an energizing originality that is often perceived to extend the boundaries of the artistic idiom. His compositions in dance and music have set trends, recognized worldwide with awards, and permeated musical expression in cultural media such as film, ballet and recordings. Panditji's scores for Mrinal Sen's 'Bhuvan Shome' (honored with the Golden Peacock, IFF, New Delhi) and painter M.F. Hussein's 'Through The Eyes of a Painter' (honored with the Golden Bear, Berlin Film Festival) are just two examples of such brilliance. As a poet, Panditji has published five well- received anthologies of poems and short stories in English and Telugu. Musicians are a rare species of human beings, seeking originality in the midst of what is the norm, expressing the voice of the human condition to those who experience it every day, seeking new spirits and notes in scales that have not changed in two thousand years. And it may be said that over half a century, Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao has been the preeminent musician to more than a generation of musicians, connoisseurs, musicologists and fans in India and parts of the world outside.
