Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of lilacs and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied with a firm, grainy frame and wonderful freshness, it possesses great elegance and effortless intensity with a mineral-tinged finish." James Suckling 95-96/100 Punkte "This is very dense for the vintage on the center palate and then rolls out on the palate. Full-bodied, tight and tannic. Very polished and refined at the end. Precise. A little more cabernet sauvignon in the blend gives this the tension."  Wine Spectator: 91-94/100 Punkte "This has solid ripeness, with plum and cassis notes flowing through, along with an ambitious oak regimen that results in ample toasted vanilla hints. Malolactic is done in barrel where it aged for 18 months. It offers intense black cherry, raspberry, fig and sous-bois scents on the nose, tightly coiled at the moment with just a hint of cedar and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of cedar and white pepper, leading to a structured and fresh finish that leaves a spicy aftertaste.   Dieser Top-Rioja aus Garnacha Tinta wird inzwischen unter der Federführung von Álvaro Palacios gekeltert. Der kleine Rebberg von 3 Hektar nahe Alfaro (Rioja) wurde mit alten Garnacha-Reben aufgestockt und der Wein wird von Jahr zu Jahr besser. Luis Gutiérrez von Robert Parker's Wine Advocate vergibt stolze 96 Punkte: "I was quite underwhelmed by a bottle of the 2016 at a blind tasting and was curious to see what the 2017 Quiñón de Valmira was like. This is the new-ish iconic wine from Rioja produced by Álvaro Palacios at the Palacios Remondo winery but sold through different channels and importers. 2017 was an extremely dry and warm vintage, and the harvest was 20 days earlier than normal. The majority of Garnacha with some 10% other red varieties was picked with good ripeness and very good health, and the destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine went through spontaneous malolactic in barrel and matured in oak foudres and bocoyes for 16 months. It feels like the essence of cherry, a Garnacha cotton candy, elegant, ethereal and tasty, more in the style of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape in this dry and warm vintage. The palate has the austere chalky texture of the very shallow limestone-rich soils that produce a stony sensation and the sapid finish, which is almost salty. It has great tannic structure with give and pliability, full of rich black fruits, cassis and raspberry notes, and pulled along by slatey minerality. It has real texture, even though yet again you can tell the fruit flirts with the fresher end of ripeness. Still, this has huge potential, should age well, and is extremely well-handled.
