Nitobe Inazo (1862 - 1933) was a Japanese agricultural economist, author, educator, diplomat, and politician. His book Bushido: The Soul of Japan explains Samurai culture to a Western audience. First published in English in 1900, Bushido takes a look at the virtues associated with the warrior’s way, such as rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor, loyalty, and self-control. Identifying the roots of Bushido in Buddhism, Shintoism, and Confucianism, he examines correspondences in Western philosophy, from modern thinkers down the ages through Greco-Roman culture and all the way back to Biblical times. The author found many resemblances between the Samurai ethos and the spirit of medieval chivalry. Bushido became an international best seller, popular with intellectuals and statesmen, and has been translated into more than 20 languages. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bridget Lawrence. Bushido: The Soul of Japan is a seminal study on the way of the samurai by the Japanese educator Inazo Nitobe. From 1868, the beginning of the Meiji Era, Japan rapidly transformed itself from an isolated feudal society into a modern, industrialised nation state, influenced by Western philosophical and scientific ideas. Nitobe wrote Bushido in English to explain the samurai way to a western audience; it was later translated into Japanese. In the book, he explained the principles of the “bushi” (warrior) and “do” (way) and positioned Bushido in the historical paradigm of knighthood and chivalry. Using a combination of western and oriental thought, he illustrated the virtues of courage, benevolence, politeness, honor, self-control, and loyalty with reference to Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shintoism, as well as modern western philosophy and classical ideas from the Bible and Greco-Roman civilization. The book was a best seller and became an enduring classic. Generations of scholars have consulted it to gain an understanding of the character of the Japanese people. ungekürzt. Language: English. Through the ages, the samurai have been associated with honor, fearlessness, calm, decisive action, strategic thinking, and martial prowess. Their ethos is known as bushido, the Way of the Warrior-Knight. Here, premier translator Thomas Cleary presents a rich collection of writings on bushido by warriors, scholars, political advisors, and educators from the 15th century through the 19th century that provide a comprehensive, historically rich view of samurai life and philosophy. Training the Samurai Mind gives an insider's view of the samurai world: the moral and psychological development of the warrior, the ethical standards they were meant to uphold, their training in both martial arts and strategy, and the enormous role that the traditions of Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism had in influencing samurai ideals. The writings deal with a broad range of subjects - from military strategy and political science, to personal discipline and character development. Cleary introduces each piece, putting it into historical context, and presents biographical information about the authors. This is an essential listen for anyone interested in military history and samurai history, and for martial artists who want to understand strategy. ungekürzt. Language: English. Avatar means the descent of a deity to Earth in an incarnate form or some manifest shape; the incarnation of god. The origin of the word avatar is from Sanskrit: avatar, a passing down, equivalent to "ava" (down) and "tara" (a passing over). The only true avatar man has ever known is Jesus Christ. Jesus is one hundred percent God and one hundred percent man, the only God-man. After the fall of man, man was inevitably stuck in sin and enslaved to sin. We are not able to save ourselves from sin and death; only God can save us.If God had not chosen to avatar, that is “cross over" or "descend”, mankind would have been forever doomed. The story of the birth, life, and sacrifice of Jesus is the only true story of the avatar. As I study other religions of the world, I find one very detrimental element missing: redemption. There is much wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in Buddhism, Islam, Shintoism, etc., but there is no answer to sin and death. Sin and death has plagued mankind since the beginning. Judaism and Christianity alone deal with the story of sin and God’s ultimate answer to it found in our avatar Jesus Christ. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Matthew Longmire. The Bushido code is a code of honor that greatly influenced Japan’s culture in the 700’s. Bushido started as a code of war and went onto become a way of life and art. It governed every part of life, from honor and war to literature and poetry. Moreover, it impacted history in a significant way, from medieval times to World War II period. The Bushido is said to have begun in the 8th century. It was influenced by Shintoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism. Some of the noblemen that adhered to Bushido later became samurai and eventually guards for daimyos and shoguns. The samurai have been known to serve their masters loyally; in fact, the term samurai translates to “one who serves”.The samurai carried swords during the Edo Period and these swords were perceived as a sign of trouble. During the Tokugawa period, the samurai were forbidden from having swords - that is when peace started returning to Japan. The samurai then turned to literature and arts. There are countless books written about the teachings and virtues of the Bushido.A samurai had only two options: life and death. In life, emphasis was placed on ability to fight, strength, and military prowess. A samurai warrior was always ready for battle. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Hadrian Howard.
