The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is a children's story written by Beatrix Potter and first published by Frederick Warne & Co. in August 1903.  The story is about an impertinent red squirrel named Nutkin and his narrow escape from an owl called Old Brown. The title followed Potter's hugely successful The Tale of Peter Rabbit and was an instant hit. The now-familiar endpapers of the Peter Rabbit series were introduced in the story.  Squirrel Nutkin had its origins in a story and picture letter Potter sent Norah Moore, the daughter of her former governess, Annie Carter Moore.  One commentator has likened Squirrel Nutkin's impertinent behaviour to that of the rebellious working class of Potter's own day, and another commentator has noted the tale's similarities to pourquoi tales and folk tales in its explanations of Squirrel Nutkin's short tail and characteristics of squirrel behaviour.  An abbreviated version of the tale appeared as a segment in the 1971 ballet film The Tales of Beatrix Potter. ungekürzt. First appearing in the May, 1962 magazine Fantastic Stories of Imagination, Double or Nothing, by Jack Sharkey, is a tongue-firmly-in-cheek science fiction short story chronicling a few hilarious, tragic-but-still-funny, days in the lives of wacky inventor Artie Lindstrom and Burt, his long-suffering engineer/fabricator partner and the tale's narrator. It is summer, in the probably distant future, and Artie Lindstrom - the wizard behind a remotely-triggered jar lid opener that became the weapon that defeated the Martian invasion, a water desalinization machine that inadvertently produced gin, and a death ray gun that obliterated Venus during the Three-Day War - has sketched out plans for an anti-gravity machine not much bigger than a mini-fridge. Burt, not all that convinced that Artie's invention is such a great idea, nonetheless builds the machine according to plan. Following Artie's and Burt's few tests and revisions, in a classic example of unintended consequences, nothing else ever goes according to plan again. After listening to Double or Nothing, you'll never look at a humble bowl of cornflakes in quite the same way. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: C. James Moore. Sir Alanbart avoids action, recoils from romance, and shuns self-sacrifice; yet when he finds himself drawn into a harebrained attempt to rescue King Arthur, he becomes a victim of all three, and then poor Alanbart must fight hard to stay true to his cowardly and indolent nature. Three Days and Two Knights is a genre crossover that blends fantasy adventure, comedy, and romance in a historical literary setting. "Few tales tell of heroes and dragons, knights and giants, magic, miracles, love, a banshee and the undead...." So begins Aelfric the Entertainer, this tale's invasive, witty and often philosophical narrator. Set on the moors of Scotland in the waning months of Arthur's rule, Three Days and Two Knights tells how Sir Alanbart, an impoverished and spineless knight; Heather, an indomitable and irresistible serving maid; Scot, a pagan swordsman of questionable intelligence and sexuality, and Sir Gawain, the legendary romantic hero, form an unlikely alliance to free King Arthur from prison. The catch? They have just three days before the blue moon rises, at which time the red wizard Rabordath will use Arthur's blood to conjure a dragon that will end a kingdom and set all of Britain aflame. Three Days and Two Knights features characters, settings, artifacts and events drawn from medieval myth and history, and will appeal to anyone who loves the middle ages, knights, monsters, magic, or King Arthur, especially those who grew up with The Hobbit, Percy Jackson, and Cressida Cowell's How to Train Your Dragon series.  ungekürzt. The Story of Little No Name is a tale about a little girl who lives all alone in a great forest. She is happy with her life in the forest except for one thing: she has no name. One day, in order to find out about herself, she ventures deeper into the dark forest. On her journey she meets three lovable forest creatures who try to help her. They are biased, unfortunately, by the limitations of their own experiences. The adventure helps her grow as a person but especially provides opportunities for deep and restful sleep. As you will see, the induction of healthy sleep is the tale's primary goal. Written in classical fairy-tale style, this story is designed to capture the magical essence found in these ancient tales. According to eminent psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, no form of narrative teaches and entertains as well as fairy tales. However, The Story of Little No Name was also designed to draw on the modern science of hypnosis. It contains many direct and indirect hypnotic suggestions of the kind developed by renowned psychiatrist Milton Erikson. The story was crafted specifically to have an irresistible sleep-producing effect. I believe it is one of the most hypnotic fairy tales ever written. Woven into the tale are frequent suggestions for security, trust, optimism, confidence, steadfastness, and especially sleep. The need to face one's fears and to overcome them, as well as the quest for identity and for one's unique relationship with the world, are played out and resolved in the tale. This story was initially intended only for children but was found to be just as effective with adults. Perhaps we are all really children in our hearts. In clinical trials with both children and adults, most fell asleep very quickly. In addition many claimed that even with frequent attempts, they never experienced the end of the tale. And this included people who had suffered for years from insomnia. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Donand Cadogan. It's a coming-of-age story beginning with a summer vacation, climaxing on a full moonlit Halloween night. They're teens now, and their club president, Mary Crane, decides to follow her teacher's suggestion of getting a pen pal for the summer. She writes to a boy her mother had read about in the newspaper - a Pennsylvania lad. He writes back. As the summer unfolds, one of the teens is witness to a crime in progress. Innocently, not only does the young pen pal of the club's president unwittingly help them solve the mystery of just who the crooks are, but they also solve what turns out to be an unresolved military mystery dating back to the war and still lingering in the shadows of the D-day invasion. Is it coincidence that Mary's pen pal just happens to be a grandson of the president of the United States? It's more than a Halloween story; it's a history book. It might be to today's chronicles of the past what Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was in 1884. With a backdrop of rural life and times as they were in 1953, this novel reawakens our faded memory and colorfully illustrates two vanishing landmarks, both epics of an American culture and world history. The family farm, for one, and, sad as it may be, the fleeting memories of the pivotal D-day invasion under Supreme Commander General Dwight David Eisenhower. Without either we could have lost the war. This novel brings them both back to life in absorbing detail - it's a fable with a solid footing of the times for the tale's lasting cultural relevance. It all happened amid five country towns, a few villages and hamlets where more than 65 family farms were busy raising children, apples, corn, and wheat and - all told - milking about 3,200 cows. ungekürzt. Blu-ray + DVD + Digital. In 1843, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) was coming off a string of failed projects, and faced with writer's block every time he tried to commit the holiday parable he'd barely envisioned to paper. As inspiration from his daily life fell into place, and Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) and his tale's other players manifested in his imagination, he'd render the most enduring seasonal narrative of all. Charming speculation on the creation of "A Christmas Carol" co-stars Jonathan Pryce, Simon Callow, Miriam Margolyes. 104 min. Widescreen, Soundtrack: English. Two-disc set.
