Krampus: The History and Legacy of the Mythological Figure Who Punishes Children During the Christmas Season , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 86min
“'Tis late night in Bavaria, and all through the village, the grownups are drunk, full of beer and such swillage; While children a-tremble, hide deep in their beds, fearful the Krampus will rip off their heads.” (Ann Hart, “Krampusnacht”, 2016)Krampus: The History and Legacy of the Mythological Figure Who Punishes Children During the Christmas Season examines the pagan and Christian influences of the yuletide villain and dives into the riveting and frightening history behind the creature. You will learn about Krampus like never before.Christmas is the most important holiday of the year. After the corresponding days that exalt the national pride of each country, such as Independence Day in the US, Victory Day in Russia, or Bastille Day in France, it's December 25 that articulates the life, the work, and the economy in much of the world, including many non-Christian countries. Since ancient times, the beginning of winter has been the occasion for most people to eat, drink, dance, and get together to beat the drum and take a break.Though Santa had many influences, his most famous is St. Nicholas, a fiercely religious philanthropist who dedicated his life to helping the disadvantaged. He was not just a beloved bishop, but a fierce defender of the faith who remained undaunted in the face of persecution. To brand him a pious and God-fearing individual would be a massive understatement - indeed, he was to those around him the definition of a walking divinity and an unrivaled miracle worker sent straight from Heaven. After Nicholas of Myra’s death, December 6 became his feast day, and over the centuries, children anticipated his appearance with gifts. However, other children, particularly those of the mischievous sort, trembled under their covers on December 6 because they could not look forward to tinkling sleigh bells or belly-shaking laughs. Instead, they feared the disconcerting sounds of heavy breathing, guttural growls, and rattlin ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Short Story Press Presents: Chest of Childhood , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 40min
Short Story Press Presents: Chest of Childhood by Janet Marie LewisAn aged, decrepit old woman wanders the quiet hallways of her home. She remembers a day when they were brighter...more kinetic with anticipation of life within their walls. Family was a regular occurrence, and the tinkling laughter of grandchildren used to echo through the house. Oh, how she missed those times, as she now hobbles oh-so-slowly with her cane through the archaic old home. And as the old woman wanders, reminiscing through the halls, she comes upon a door. Rusty hinges amplify groan of age as the door swings slowly open, and she balances herself in the doorway. The old woman discovers a chest...an antique old cedar chest that is very large, and her breath catches briefly as her heart thumps in her own body. The chest has sparked a memory, and she releases the door jam. Using her cane for support, the woman shambles over to the massive trunk with anticipation in her eyes.It had been near 85 years after all, since she’d seen what was in the trunk, and she could barely remember, though it called out to her in the otherwise empty room. Now, it took her what seemed like a very long time to reach it, and when she did, her weakened old body fell against it for support. She fumbled with the latch as her gnarled and arthritic hands fought against what it was she desired, but finally...she was able to snap the hasp upward, releasing the lock on the trunk. What she discovered inside was not just a memory. What she discovered was a living, breathing catalyst that grasped her firmly in its grips and propelled her back in time. The old woman discovered herself in the midst of her childhood friends. A child again herself, she caught the jump rope chant on the wind.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Krista Nicely. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 245min
One of the best-loved children’s stories of all time, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz describes the adventures of young Dorothy, who is swept away from her Kansas farm in a cyclone, and lands in the strange country of Oz. This audiobook is ideal for young listeners (ages 5 to 12) to discover for themselves that a book can contain so much more adventure than a movie. Although the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland was immensely popular, it left out many parts of this story. While this four-hour audiobook edition is faithful to the original novel, it includes much more than just the spoken word. This premium audio edition will also kindle your child’s imagination with mysterious sounds such as winged monkeys hooting and flapping, animals growling, Munchkin bells, a flowing river, castle doors, Toto barking, chopping down trees, magic witches’ music, and even the clunky tinkling of a china cow! It's not just a narration - it also features in-character stereo conversations between brave and innocent young Dorothy, the lovable Scarecrow without a brain, the sad Tin Man without a heart, the blustery Lion without courage, and many, many others. Although this story is more than a hundred years old, its magic has not faded. The 21st century success of the Broadway musical Wicked (set in the land of Oz) has prompted two new movies for 2013, also based partly on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz. If you or child has seen, or you plan to see any of these Oz shows, then you should also find out how it all began. Set your child off on the original magical trip: this captivating audio journey, along the yellow brick road to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Shane Sody. Für Anna Maria-Complete Piano Music
eroen Van Veen has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics of music by the masters of Minimalism, that 1960s-derived aesthetic in which it is not so much the case that more can be said with less as that less seems to be necessary in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has never counted himself as among the minimalist number, nor indeed was he schooled in their new traditions, but emerged in the 1960s as an angry and dissonant voice whose musically expressed anger against Communist oppression of his native country could barely be contained within the tumultuous textures of works such as the Third Symphony, but a combination of personal circumstances and aesthetic decisions led him to pare back his style to the world of eerie calm and yet underlying melancholy that has made works such as the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten such an enduring favourite even among audiences who would not otherwise count themselves as aficionados of the European contemporary music scene. But then Pärt has never fitted into any one stylistic box, and alongside the quiet rapture of Für Alina we may find the student-era tinkling of the intriguing early Dance Pieces, as well as arrangements of classics such as Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel - here interpreted by Dutch cellist Douw Fonda - that seem to preserve their special mood no matter what the instrumental forces, a quality they share with works of Pärt's compositional idol, J.S. Bach.Other information:- Recorded in March 2013 and March 2014 (cello arrangements).- Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is a unique figure in the musical world. The utter simplicity of his works, inspired by his deep religious feelings, has a strange, hypnotic power over the listener. Confronted with the stark, naked and essential musical lines, one feels close to the inner truth of oneself and the other, a human bond which only music can bring.- No wonder the music of Pärt, the cult figure, reaches beyond the boundaries of traditional classical audiences. Many recordings of Pärt achieve a bestselling status.- This release set contains the complete music for piano, featuring the well known 'Spiegel im Spiegel', and 'Für Alina' (not yet as popular as 'Für Elise', but well on its way...).- Played by the champion of Minimal Music, Jeroen van Veen, who recorded for Brilliant Classics several collections of minimalist pianomusic, and the complete piano music of Philip Glass.- Including new recordings of Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel for cello and piano.- Booklet notes by Jeroen van Veen.- Shop: odax

In Glorious Sound
Percy Whitlock (1903-1946) began his musical career at age 7 in Chatham, Kent, England. His four extemporizations were written in 1933 and are considered to be an important part of his body of work. The Fanfare is the fourth of his four pieces featuring spectacular sounds in 7/8 time. Louis Vierne (1870-1937) became Organist Titulaire at Notre Dame de Paris at age 30. He was born blind, had his sight partially restored at age 10 but lost it again at age 48. He died at age 67 of a massive stroke while seated on the organ bench during a recital with his student Maurice Durufle. The Prelude (track 2) is the first of six movements in the Piece de Fantisie. It is actually a toccata, though the mood of the pieces remains somewhat restrained. The Scherzo (track 9) is the third movement of Symphony II. Vierne wrote six symphonies for organ working from only one or two themes for each. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) most likely wrote his Piece d'Orgue while serving as organist to the Duke of Weimar. Bach left that post in the middle of a feud between the Duke and his nephew who introduced Bach to the Court of Anhalt-Cothen. He became Capellmeister there after spending a month in jail, having incurred the Duke's displeasure when he asked to be released. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) at age 36 became the first organist at the newly consecrated St. Clotilde Basilica in Paris. He was particularly noted for his improvisation skills. His Prelude, Fugue, Variation, Op. 18 was originally written as a duet for harmonium and piano. Charles Ives (1874-1954) was born in Danbury, Connecticut. His father often had Charles and his brother sign in different keys while he played the piano in a third key. While at Yale, Ives showed his teacher, Horatio Parker, a Fugue in Four Keys to be played simultaneously which he had written. Parker asked him not to bring in any more such works, but Ives was not discouraged. He wrote Variations on America at age 17, four years into his composing career. The piece features a stunning variety of musical styles, including a discordant one, which sometimes fools audiences into thinking the organist is making mistakes. C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918), an English-born composer, taught at the Royal College of Music and at Oxford University. One of his first major works, a choral setting of scenes from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, has often been said to mark the start of a 'renaissance' in English music. His Chorale Preludes show both respect for Bach and Parry's love of hymnody. The two selections on track 6, Rockingham and Melcombe, offer a dream-like state. William Bolcom (1938- ) is the only living composer whose work is featured on this disc. He studied at Stanford University with Leland Smith and at the Paris Conservatiore with Darius Milhaud and Oliver Messiaen. His tremendous range of composition covers the gamut from popular songs to settings of William Blake's poetry. Bolcom wrote three Gospel Preludes in response to a commission from the Dallas chapter of the American Guild of Organists in 1979. They were so well received that three more books of three preludes were commissioned. The four books were written from 1979 to 1984. David N. Johnson (1922-1987) graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and Syracuse University. He was head of the music department at St. Olaf College in Minnesota and the organ department at Syracuse before joining the music department at Arizona State University. He was also organist and director of music at Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix. His Trumpet Tune in D Major is frequently used at weddings and can be heard weekly on the radio program 'With Heart and Voice'. Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (1844-1937) was born in Lyon, France to a family of organ builders. At age 26 Widor was appointed organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris where he played what is considered to be the finest French Cavaille-Coll instrument. The instrument was an inspiration to Widor and he remained at Saint-Sulpice for 64 years. His best known work, this Toccata from his Symphony for Organ No. 5, is often played as a recessional at weddings and at the close of Midnight Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. About the Organist Terry Flanagan is Music Director at the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco (PCMK) overseeing the programs of adult, children and handbell choirs. Terry has played recitals on many of the New York City's organs, and served as Organist and Assistant Choirmaster at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church for over 18 years. He studied organ under the instruction of Dr. John Weaver at both the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Terry has studied French, British and German Organ Music to learn about European instruments and the literature composed for them. The present disc is the first solo recording that Terry has been willing to make, thanks to the brilliance and vocal clarity of the fine von Beckerath instrument at PCMK. About the Organ The 'Water Organ' was designed and built in Hamburg, Germany by the von Beckerath Organ Company, and was so named by it's donor, Bonnie Trotta, to reflect the dramatic force, graceful peace and emotional healing of spiritual music. Organist Anthony Newman served as design consultant for the project. The mechanical tracker-action, electric stop-action organ incorporates the traditions of German Baroque and French Romantic organ building. The 41 stops, 53 ranks and 2640 pipes are distributed among the Grand Orgue, Recit, Positif and Pedal divisions. The organ contains two real 32' stops, a Bourdon and a Contra Bombarde which give incredible depth of sound in the acoustically lively sanctuary of the church. One special feature of the organ is the Cymbelstern, a stop producing the sound of tinkling bells while two decorative stars spin on the case of the organ. The Cymbelstern was donated by Jane Brooks Farrell in memory of her husband, Robert H. Brooks. About the Church The Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco is a welcoming Christian community. We believe the importance of family, social justice, compassion for one another and spiritual values nurtured through the ministries of worship, education and fellowship. The best way to experience the joy and inspiration that is PCMK is to join worship on Sundays at 10am, and listen to the organ and other musical offerings live. Services and fellowship are warm and inviting, and the messages relevant to today's living.- Shop: odax

Ceol Sidhe (Shee Music)
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent' Victor Hugo, French Poet & Novelist This memorable work of Micheál Ó hEidhin and his two distinguished collaborators, Charlie Lennon and Steve Cooney, is in the tradition of the ceol sidhe. There is power in this music that speaks to the soul. This has to do partly with the scope and variety of the music but more especially with the spirit and style of the performance. The style is gentle, relaxed, effortless - a hallmark of the true artist. When a member of the Sidhe invited a human to the otherworld, a branch of an apple tree was made to appear, laden with golden apples that when shaken sounded like bells tinkling. The Sidhe would shake the branch and the music it made lured the human away. The beauty of that music had the power to allay fear, to soothe one to sleep, even to cure a sickness or heal a wound. This album was named Album of the Year in the Live Ireland Awards 2012. 'Ceol Sidhe features Steve Cooney, Charlie Lennon, and Michael Hynes on guitar, fiddle and concertina, respectively. There are 19 cuts on the album, each more brilliant than the other. Believe it or not, there are only two sets of reels! This album is adults playing Irish music. Perfectly. Not 305mph, like so many of today's children. If you love Irish traditional music, this is the perfect instrumental album'- Shop: odax

Coctel Musical
This unique classic album, recorded in Havana in 1956, reflects the popularity in the mid-fifties of what was coined "cocktail music". The title was appropriated by hipsters to represent the cool, jazzy, crooning music of the 1950's cocktail lounge. The sound of cool jazz and tinkling ice cubes in cocktail glasses brings to mind the vibe of the day. In America this style was associated with artists such as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and the like, and was also linked to what would become "space age bachelor pad music" and other forms of exotica. This compilation was Cuba's answer to the popular trend and features some of the biggest stars of 1950's Havana including Doris de la Torre, Roland Gerbeau, Sergio Fiallo, Ana Margarita and Hector Quintero in a "cocktail" setting. A unique album and one of a kind. All selections newly re-mastered.- Shop: odax
