The unique combination between muted trumpet effects and the use of the different percussion instruments allows an interesting 'Interplay' between the performers. Four Pieces for Trumpet and Marimba................................ Erwin Chandler (Nichols Music Co., 1980) Allegro - Moderato Ballad Freedom Etude Finale Four Pieces for Trumpet and Marimba was dedicated to Robert Levy and Gordon Stout in 1980 as part of the Wilder Duo Series for trumpet and percussion. Written for trumpet and marimba, each movement can be conceived as a complete work in itself. The composer places each performer in the role of accompanists and soloists with the use of improvisation and ostinatos figures. Each movement combines tempo variations, rhythmic complexities, and dynamic contrasts that makes this a unique chamber work. Sonata No. 2 For Trumpet and Percussion ...................... Anthony Cirone (Columbia, 1966) Sonata No. 2 for Trumpet and Percussion opens at moderato with the trumpet performing a melodic passage, which exploits the range and diminished in length while the tom-toms fill the spaces with accelerating rhythmic colors. The allegro vivo features the syncopated eighth note melody that is supported by the snare drum's military like cadence with tom interludes. This section concludes with the unison rhythmic passage ending with the trumpet lip smack and percussion rim click. A trumpet cadenza and mimicking vibraphone cadenza provide a change in texture and set the stage for andante section. Sonata No. 2 concludes with a brief trumpet cadenza, followed by a recapitulation of the opening statement and the ending rhythmic unison motive of the allegro vivo. This suite involves a variety of subtle tempo and dynamic changes as well as some interesting colors created by the use of different mutes in the trumpet part. The influence of classical, jazz, and popular music styles can be heard in this suite. It was written for the Wilder Duo, Gordon Stout, professor of percussion at Ithaca College and Robert Levy, professor of music and trumpet at Lawrence University. Incantation For Trumpet and Percussion ............................ Howard J. Buss (Brixton Publications, 1993-94) Incantation For Trumpet and Percussion written in 1994 evokes the mystery and enchantment of the sorcerer's ritual.
