The Secret Agent , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 680min
The Secret Agent was one of the first espionage novels ever written, and it is certainly one of the finest in the oeuvre of Joseph Conrad. The story concerns the attempt by a group of back-alley revolutionaries to destroy one of London's most famous landmarks and thereby set off a revolution. As the plot unfolds, we discover a cast of unlikely villains, self-aggrandizing intellectuals, overeager bureaucrats, fame hungry politicians, and innocent bystanders, all described with poignant psychological depth as only Conrad could. The story centers around Adolph Verloc, owner of a Soho bookshop and ostensibly a member of a group of home-grown anarchists, but actually in the pay of a foreign government. Verloc's quiescent wife, Winnie, maintains their stable household in which she tries to provide for her retarded brother and her aging mother under the thinly disguised irritability of her husband. The anarchist collective consists of "Doctor" Ossipan, who lives off his romantic attachments to women barely able to take care of themselves; "The Professor", an explosives expert who is so insecure that he is perpetually wired with a detonator in case he is threatened by police capture; and Michaelis, a corpulent writer composing an autobiography after a mitigated sentence in prison. When Verloc is summoned to the embassy in whose pay he works, he receives a cold reception from his new superior, Vladimir. Vladimir tells Verloc that he's going to have to start producing or he'll lose the wages he receives. A humiliated Verloc is shocked when he receives orders to blow up Greenwich Observatory. As the scheme takes shape, it is Verloc who is compelled to execute the plan. But his doubts and fears are only too well justified, and despite his misgivings, he pushes ahead. However, it is the man-child Stevie who brings the enterprise to its ignominious end. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. No one ever truly disappears. In every unsolved case, at least one person knows the truth. True crime is one of the most popular genres on the bookshelves - new docuseries and podcasts entice an audience millions strong. But why are we so drawn to real-life horror? What does it say about us?True crime is about humanity. We are hardwired to pay attention to things that could harm us, and that’s why so many of us are captivated by the genre. It’s not a reflection of something dark within us - it’s a reflection of human nature.True crime has become more than a source of entertainment, and it plays a critical role in giving forgotten victims a voice they never had the chance to share. Indeed, reading and sharing true crime stories is an act of social responsibility. When true crime is done well, it teaches us how to be vigilant. It teaches us compassion, and it keeps the memories of victims alive.True crime writers have the responsibility to provide a balanced narrative and tell the stories of both perpetrator and victim without sensationalism. It is through this careful attention to detail that the victim is honored, and innocent bystanders are protected from the crossfire.Having lived through the traumatic disappearance of a loved one herself, Hannah J. Tidy understands the weight of this responsibility and expertly guides you through some of the most disturbing true crime stories of all time.In True Crime Stories: Murders, Disappearances, and Serial Killers: Twisted Tales of True Crime, you’ll be led through a series of the darkest cases the world has ever seen. Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 708min
My daughter used to be so wonderful. Now I can barely stand her and she won’t tell me anything. How can I find out what’s going on? "There’s a clique in my daughter’s grade that’s making her life miserable. She doesn’t want to go to school anymore. Her own supposed friends are turning on her, and she’s too afraid to do anything. What can I do?" Welcome to the wonderful world of your daughter’s adolescence. A world in which she comes to school one day to find that her friends have suddenly decided that she no longer belongs. Or she’s teased mercilessly for wearing the wrong outfit or having the wrong friend. Or branded with a reputation she can’t shake. Or pressured into conforming so she won’t be kicked out of the group. For better or worse, your daughter’s friendships are the key to enduring adolescence - as well as the biggest threat to her well-being. In her groundbreaking book, Queen Bees and Wannabes, Empower cofounder Rosalind Wiseman takes you inside the secret world of girls' friendships. Wiseman has spent more than a decade listening to thousands of girls talk about the powerful role cliques play in shaping what they wear and say, how they respond to boys, and how they feel about themselves. In this candid, insightful book, she dissects each role in the clique: Queen Bees, Wannabes, Messengers, Bankers, Targets, Torn Bystanders, and more. She discusses girls' power plays, from birthday invitations to cafeteria seating arrangements and illicit parties. She takes listeners into "Girl World" to analyze teasing, gossip, and reputations; beauty and fashion; alcohol and drugs; boys and sex; and more, and how cliques play a role in every situation. Each chapter includes "Check Your Baggage" sections to help you identify how your own background and biases affect how you see your daughter. "What You Can Do to Help" sections offer extensive sample scripts, bulleted lists, and other easy-to-use advic ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lee Adams. How America Was Lost: From 9/11 to the Police/Warfare State , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1074min
Even as the view of America as a rogue state consolidates abroad, Americans appear largely bystanders at the spectacle of their government running amok. People forget the myriad instances of their government's flouting of the Constitution and international legal norms - if ever they were aware of them in the first place - accepting to live in the increasingly pernicious "new normal" with little protest. This remarkable anthology of columns documents and reminds us of the extraordinary developments that, in their accumulation, have led to the destruction of accountable and moral government in the US. Few American commentators have cut more clearly through the deepening deceit, hypocrisy and outright criminality that has infested official Washington since 9/11 than Paul Craig Roberts. His scathing critique sheds much-needed light on the country's impending nightmare: economic collapse, internal repression, ongoing wars, and rising rejection by friends and foes alike. America's fate was sealed when the public and the anti-war movement bought the government's 9/11 conspiracy theory. This defining event of our time, which has launched the US on interminable wars of aggression and a domestic police state, is a taboo topic for investigation in the media. Trillion dollar wars have created financing problems for Washington's deficits, threatening the dollar's role as world reserve currency, and putting Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block. These protections are called "entitlements" as if they are some sort of welfare that people have not paid for in payroll taxes all their working lives. With over 21 per cent unemployment, with American jobs, GDP, and technology having been given to China and India, with war being Washington's greatest commitment, with the dollar over-burdened with debt, with civil liberty sacrificed to the bogus war on terror, the liberty and prosperity of the American people have been thrown into the t ungekürzt. Trudge: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 410min
For Cade Grayson, husband, father, and former Delta Force operator, that one warm sunny Saturday in July - to be labeled Z-Day by some anonymous person probably long dead - began like all the others before and none since. With his daughter, Raven, and wife, Brook, away visiting her parents in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Cade hopes his immediate future holds nothing but an easy chair, Mariners on the tube, and paring down a honey-do list a mile long. But those hopes were quickly dashed and his life forever changed when news broke of a clash in downtown Portland between soldiers from the Oregon National Guard and hundreds of anarchist protesters suddenly turned violent and, by one anchor's account, blood-thirsty and cannibalistic. As the first waves of injured bystanders, guardsmen, and rioters arrived at hospitals, it became apparent that a deadly new disease had been unleashed on the population. Whether the virus was naturally occurring or an escaped lab experiment, Cade hadn't a clue and wasn't especially concerned until he learned of its unprecedented virulence, unusual method of transference, and the fact that, according to the news, it brought the newly dead back to life, semi-mindless, and with an insatiable desire to feed on the flesh of the living. Armed with this new information and now seeing the bigger cities such as Washington, D.C., New York, and Los Angeles rocked by the rapidly spreading scourge, Cade ignores the volley of contradictory edicts drawn up by the White House and set into motion by FEMA and DHS, dusts off his tools of war, and loads his truck with supplies. Unable to get ahold of Brook and Raven, and unwilling to leave them at the mercy of some distant politician's inability to hold the nation together, he begins an impossible 3,000-mile journey across a reeling United States with presumably millions of infected in his path and only one acceptable outcome: find Brook and Raven alive - or die trying. ungekürzt. Far from the Madding Crowd , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 914min
Gabriel Oak is a young shepherd. With the savings of a frugal life and a loan, he has leased and stocked a sheep farm. He falls in love with a newcomer eight years his junior, Bathsheba Everdene, a proud beauty who arrives to live with her aunt, Mrs. Hurst. She comes to like him well enough and even saves his life once, but when he makes her an unadorned offer of marriage, she refuses; she values her independence too much and him too little. Gabriel's blunt protestations serve only to drive her to haughtiness. After a few months, she moves to Weatherbury, a village some miles off. When next they meet, their circumstances have changed drastically. An inexperienced new sheepdog drives Gabriel's flock over a cliff, ruining him. After selling off everything of value, he manages to settle all his debts but emerges penniless. He seeks employment at a work fair in the town of Casterbridge (a fictionalized version of Dorchester). When he finds none, he heads to another fair in Shottsford, a town about 10 miles from Weatherbury. On the way, he happens upon a dangerous fire on a farm and leads the bystanders in putting it out. When the veiled owner comes to thank him, he asks if she needs a shepherd. She uncovers her face and reveals herself to be none other than Bathsheba. She has recently inherited the estate of her uncle and is now a wealthy woman. Though somewhat uncomfortable, she hires him. Meanwhile, Bathsheba has a new admirer: the lonely and repressed William Boldwood. Boldwood is a prosperous farmer of about 40 whose ardor Bathsheba unwittingly awakens when - her curiosity piqued because he has never bestowed on her the customary admiring glance - she playfully sends him a valentine sealed with red wax on which she has embossed the words "marry me". Boldwood, not realizing the valentine was a jest, becomes obsessed with Bathsheba and soon proposes marriage. Although she does not love him, she toys with the idea of accepting his offer; h ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Davina Porter. Buenos Aires Travel Guide , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 34min
The city of Buenos Aires is a beautiful combination of classic European design and the grandiose allure of Latin American flare. This capital city of Argentina has a lot to offer travelers, and not just because it is the birthplace of the tango. In fact, the tango is merely a part of the trifecta of local passions that many visitors seek out, with steak and wine being equally favored. However, the French design, Italian cuisine, and Spanish nightlife have made this city a medley of culture, fun, and flavor. Between romantic restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, Buenos Aires is passionate, exciting, and offers an atmosphere that is not to be missed. This Argentinian capital is not only one of the most exciting cities on the continent, but in the world. Not only is this city an infusion of culture, it is also incredibly generous. There are a wide variety of free activities, allowing travelers to save their funds for one of the many delicious and elaborate dining or drinking experiences the city offers. Additionally, the city is renowned for the local residents who offer free tours, giving sightseers the best perspectives of the city. And most of the city's parks feature free yoga or tai chi classes with welcoming atmospheres, so any one is able to participate. Plus, it is not unusual to encounter an impromptu tango show on the streets, which will often invite bystanders to participate. Straggling between the ethos of both Latin America and Europe, Buenos Aires features Belle Époque architecture, along with tree-lined avenues and cobblestone streets that are filled with adorable cafés and boutiques. Modeled after Paris and Madrid, the city was remodeled in the 20th century. However, public art and graffiti accent the historic buildings, bringing a liveliness and uniqueness to the surroundings. Known for good times, great food, world-class wine, and late nights, visitors should be prepared for the city to come alive each night. Most nights, one a.m. is c ungekürzt. Language: English. Years later, the Gentleman Bastard series continues to shine with Lynch's signature blend of swashbuckling adventure, sparkling wit, and seemingly impossible heists. It's all here in this rollicking eBook bundle, which collects the first three volumes of Lynch's one-of-a-kind series: THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA RED SEAS UNDER RED SKIES THE REPUBLIC OF THIEVES An orphan's life is harsh-and often short-in the mysterious island city of Camorr.
