From veteran pop culture scribe Nathan Rabin, former head writer of the A.V. Club and the man who wrote the book on, and with, "Weird Al" Yankovic in the 2012 coffee table book Weird Al: The Book (Nathan Rabin with Al Yankovic) comes The Weird Accordion to Al, an even more essential guide to an American original's life and work. Adapted from the column on its author's website, Nathan Rabin's happy place, with an introduction from Al himself, The Weird Accordion to Al explores every track on all 16 of Al's records (14 studio albums, the medium rarities obscurities collection, and Peter & the Wolf, his collaboration with Wendy Carlos) with an obsessiveness that's downright peculiar. Equal parts music criticism, cultural and comedy history, autobiography, and comic meditation on nostalgia, television, consumerism, childhood, technology, and food, The Weird Accordion to Al does justice to a musical legend and comic genius, the extent of whose remarkable achievements are only now being fully understood and appreciated.Praise for The Weird Accordion to Al:“A brilliant, heartfelt cry of obsession and love for an already beloved and obsessed-over artist. Share Nathan’s madness and be freed!” (Patton Oswalt, American stand-up comedian)"This book is pop culture history, music dissertation, and comedic theory. Nathan has exemplified the qualities that make Weird Al an artist who is equal parts Frank Zappa, Mel Brooks, and Mark Twain.” (Jonah Ray, American actor and comedian)“You don’t have to be a fan of Weird Al to enjoy Rabin’s raucous deep-dive into the complete discography. But if you’re not a Weird Al fan, there’s clearly something wrong with you.” (Alex Winter, American actor)“Wonderfully captures the quirks and fun details that have made the Yank-oeuvre ooze with oddness for almost four decades. Nathan really shows you what makes Al's mind tick. Spoiler: It's ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Eric Jason Martin. The famed Internet personality - named one of Rolling Stone's Funniest People on Twitter and creator of the viral #notokay for women to share their stories of sexual assault - and best-selling author of Everything Is Perfect When You're a Liar turns her laser-like wit to anxiety, parenthood (or "the sheer insanity of being in charge of the safety and livelihood of three people besides myself"), popular culture, and more in this razor sharp essay collection. Like Chelsea Handler, David Sedaris, Dave Barry, and Patton Oswalt, Kelly Oxford - the Canadian native and Los Angeles transplant - has won legions of fans with her comedic skill, down-to-earth voice, and bull's-eye observations on the absurdity of modern life. For example: "Congratulations, America, I finally get a green card & now I may have to move back to Canada. Trump in the final two for president. Surreal." "Dear parents of preteen boys, tell them they'll get ED by 18 if they watch Internet porn, then buy them some porno mags. Thank you, Women." "I'm not going to have a coffee this morning, with the intent of blaming all my screw-ups on the missed coffee." "1 good piece of news today: 7yo told me there is a secret war going on between muffins and cupcakes & I haven't stopped thinking about it." Dishing about her kids, her move to America (and what she really thinks about life in LA), her marriage, and how she copes (or not) with anxiety and depression, When You Find out the World Is Against You is Kelly at her honest and most disarmingly funny best. Filled with biting, wise, and laugh-out-loud insights, this vastly entertaining collection of vignettes will make you think as much as it will make you laugh. ungekürzt. Language: English. From the best-selling author of Assassination Vacation and Unfamiliar Fishes, a humorous account of the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette - the one Frenchman we could all agree on - and an insightful portrait of a nation's idealism and its reality. On August 16, 1824, an elderly French gentlemen sailed into New York Harbor, and giddy Americans were there to welcome him. Or, rather, to welcome him back. It had been 30 years since he had last set foot in the United States, and he was so beloved that 80,000 people showed up to cheer for him. The entire population of New York at the time was 120,000. Lafayette's arrival in 1824 coincided with one of the most contentious presidential elections in American history. Congress had just fought its first epic battle over slavery, and the threat of a Civil War loomed. But Lafayette, belonging to neither North nor South, to no political party or faction, was a walking, talking reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of the revolutionary generation and what they wanted this country to be. His return was not just a reunion with his beloved Americans; it was a reunion for Americans with their own astonishing, singular past. Lafayette in the Somewhat United States is a humorous and insightful portrait of the famed Frenchman, the impact he had on our young country, and his ongoing relationship with instrumental Americans of the time, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and many more. John Slattery as the Marquis de Lafayette Nick Offerman as George Washington Fred Armisen as Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben Bobby Cannavale as Benjamin Franklin John Hodgman as John Adams Stephanie March as Evelyn Wotherspoon Wainwight and Linda Williams Alexis Denisof as The British Leadership Patton Oswalt as Thomas Jefferson and Sherm ungekürzt. John Hodgman - best-selling author, The Daily Show's "Resident Expert", minor television celebrity, and deranged millionaire - brings us the third and final installment in his trilogy of Complete World Knowledge. In 2005, Dutton published The Areas of My Expertise, a handy little book of Complete World Knowledge, marked by the distinction that all of the fascinating trivia and amazing true facts were completely made up by its author, John Hodgman. At the time, Hodgman was merely a former literary agent and occasional scribbler of fake trivia. In short: a nobody. But during an interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, an incredible transformation occurred. He became a famous minor television personality. You may ask: During his whirlwind tornado ride through the high ether of minor fame and outrageous fortune, did John Hodgman forget how to write books of fake trivia? The answer is: Yes. Briefly. But soon, he remembered! And so he returned, crashing his Kansas farmhouse down upon the wicked witch of ignorance with More Information than You Require, a New York Times best seller containing even more mesmerizing and essential fake trivia, including seven hundred mole-man names (and their occupations). And now, John Hodgman completes his vision with That Is All, the last book in a trilogy of Complete World Knowledge. Like its predecessors, That Is All compiles incredibly handy made-up facts into brief articles, overlong lists, and beguiling narratives on new and familiar themes. It picks up exactly where More Information left off - specifically, at page 596 - and finally completes Complete World Knowledge, just in time for the return of Quetzalcoatl and the end of human history in 2012. 16 Hours. Read by Dick Cavett, Patton Oswalt, Jon Hamm, Paul Rudd, Sarah Vowell, Brooke Shields, Scott Adsit, Robin Goldwasser, Jonathan Coulton, John Roderick, Rachel Maddo ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Hodgman. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/peng/001980/bk_peng_001980_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

My back story began one fateful day in 1984 in health class. This particular day would be anything but routine, for a fifth grader who was about to take a routine test at school, required of all its students. We were asked to stand in a single file. Lined up for what, we didn't know. But it wasn't for the daily morning roll call. At first I wasn't worried, not until we had to lift our shirts so the nurse could check our back for unevenness. To perform what is otherwise known as the Adams Forward Bend Test. Screenings were performed during physical education classes. It took approximately one minute per student. Boys were screened separately from girls. During the screening you were asked to stand straight, but relaxed, with your arms hanging loosely at your sides at about the level of your knees, keeping your feet together, while looking straight ahead. Two screenings were required before parents were notified to see an orthopedist. What seemed like a simple examination was difficult for my young mind to understand. When it was finally my turn I was nervous, but I didn't have a chance at relief when it was over. The nurse pulled me aside from the rest of the group. She wanted to take a closer look at an "area of concern." I don't know what was more troubling, hearing her words, or being the only one of my peers to have to hear them. The right side of my body was more pronounced than my left. Another wards, I had what could only be described as a hump in my back. I would have to see a specialist for further assessment. Needless to say, I was stunned. All I could do was stand there in silence, isolated with my own thoughts. I didn't know what to think. I had never heard of scoliosis, much less knew what it was. I was filled with apprehension at the thought of seeing a doctor. At the doctor's office they took a series of x-rays of my midsection, checking for abnormalities. What they concluded was I had a curvature of the spine measuring between 40-4 ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amanda Oswalt. In this entertaining and eye-opening collection, writer, actor, and feminist Tracy Dawson showcases trailblazers throughout history who disguised themselves as men and continuously broke the rules to gain access and opportunities denied them because they were women. This book will surprise, astonish, and hopefully anger you on the lengths women have had to go to pursue their dreams. Tracy has such a gift for storytelling and making history leap off the page. Her book has a wit that suggests it was written by a man since everyone knows women aren't this funny.Kay Cannon, writer, producer, director (the Pitch Perfect films, Cinderella)A smart, funny journey through history that introduces us to the rule breakers who made history worth traveling through.Patton Oswalt, comedian, actor and authorI came up with Tracy as a fellow sketch comedian on the vomit-soaked stages of the Toronto comedy scene. And like the brilliant, resourceful, rule-breaking, damn-well-stubborn sisters in Let Me Be Frank, Tracy is someone who gets the job done, and gets it done well.Samantha Bee, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Let Me Be Frank illuminates with a wry warmth the incredible stories of a diverse group of women from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds who have defied the patriarchy, refusing to allow men or the status quo to define their lives or break their spirit. An often sardonic and thoroughly impassioned homage to female ingenuity and tenacity, the women profiled in this inspiring anthology broke the rules to reach their goals and refused to take no for an answer. These women took matters into their own hands, dressingsometimes literally, sometimes figurativelyas men to do what they wanted to do.
