Mass of the Faithful (eBook, ePUB)
Moving was a constant, and often necessary, way of life for John. By the age of thirteen, his family had moved ten times. And now, as a freshman in high school, they would move again. To a place called Hopedale, a predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant town, a place where he was looked at as nothing more than an Irish punk.He promised his mother he'd try, really try, to make things right with the kids at school. And the teachers. But some promises are harder to keep than others. When his family loses faith in his ability to turn over a new leaf, John realizes things had to change. The year was 1965 and religion had turned its back on him, his friends suddenly declared themselves mortal enemies of all law enforcement, and Hopedale High School had shown itself to be nothing more than a place that existed in order to determine who would succeed in life, who would succeed in business, and who would work in the inferno known as Draper's foundry. After graduation, John has one thing left in front of him that might help him find out who he was, where he came from, and where he would be going.- Shop: buecher

The Boy on the Shed , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 541min
Shortlisted for the 2018 William Hill Sports Book of the Year Today was his first climb to the top. He knew if he was there, watching, then she would never leave him. Her name was Bernadette, and he climbed the shed every day. This is a not a football book, as such. Rather, it is a memoir by someone who happened to have superior ability at the sport during his formative years, which led him on a remarkable journey. Paul Ferris became a professional footballer and at the age of 16 was the youngest ever to play in Newcastle United's first team. Coming from Northern Ireland and being a skilful winger with dancing feet, he was inevitably hailed as 'the new George Best'. But the story of his time in the game, particularly as a young player, is one of insecurity, injuries, uncertainty, fear and, ultimately, a failure to fulfil his hopes and dreams. The book opens in Lisburn, near Belfast. The Ferris family are Catholics in a predominantly Protestant town at the height of The Troubles. Ferris relives his childhood and teens with brutal candour laced with black humour. The Boy on the Shed is a beautifully written account of a life, but it also lifts the lid on big personalities at Newcastle United. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ruairi Conaghan. On the harsh city streets, this young man struggled with being misunderstood by both sides of the spectrum, considered "too ghetto" for some peers and "too proper" for others. In the midst of trying to find his way, he had to cope with a horrific tragedy that had a profound effect on his family, as well as the tragic loss of a friend. He faced the mental turmoil of those who disapproved of him dating outside of his race, which ultimately destroyed a number of personal relationships.Despite the obstacles in his path, this man would finally go on to become a social advocate for today's troubled youth. Not only did he overcome the bitterness of his past, he also learned how to channel his own demons without living life in the fast lane. He would rekindle his spiritual relationship with God, in whom he draws his strength and his well-being. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jeff Gorcyca. Holding the Line: Women in the Great Arizona Mine Strike of 1983 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 592min
Holding the Line, Barbara Kingsolver's first nonfiction book, is the story of women's lives transformed by an a signal event. Set in the small mining towns of Arizona, it is part oral history and part social criticism, exploring the process of empowerment that occurs when people work together as a community. Like Kingsolver's award-winning novels, Holding the Line is a beautifully written book grounded on the strength of its characters.Hundreds of families held the line in the 1983 strike against Phelps Dodge Copper in Arizona. After more than a year, the strikers lost their union certification, but the battle permanently altered the social order in these small, predominantly Hispanic mining towns. At the time the strike began, many women said they couldn't leave the house without their husband's permission. Yet, when injunctions barred union men from picketing, their wives and daughters turned out for the daily picket lines. When the strike dragged on and men left to seek jobs elsewhere, women continued to picket, organize support, and defend their rights even when the towns were occupied by the National Guard. "Nothing can ever be the same as it was before," said Diane McCormick of the Morenci Miners Women's Auxiliary. "Look at us. At the beginning of this strike, we were just a bunch of ladies." Insider Outsider: My Journey as a Stranger in White Evangelicalism and My Hope for Us All , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 292min
Pastor Bryan Loritts dives deep into what it's like to be a person of color in predominantly white evangelical spaces today and where we can go from here.God boldly proclaims throughout the Book of Acts that there is no "ethnic home team" when it comes to Christianity. But the minority experience in America today - and throughout history - too often tells a different story. As Loritts writes, "It is impossible to do theology devoid of cultural lenses and expressions. Like an American unaware of their own accent, most whites are unaware of the ethnic theological accent they carry." Insider Outsider bears witness to the true stories that often go untold - stories that will startle, enlighten, and herald a brighter way forward for all seeking belonging in the family of God.This seminal work on race and the church will help Christians discover:How they can learn the art of listening to stories unlike their ownIdentify the problems and pitfalls that keep Sunday morning the most segregated hour of the weekAnd participate in an active movement with God toward a holy vision of what Dietrich Bonhoeffer calls "life together"Drawing on insightful snapshots through history, eye-opening personal experiences, and biblical exposition, Loritts awakens both our minds and hearts to the painful reality of racial divides as well as the hope of forgiveness. ungekürzt. Milliken's Bend: A Civil War Battle in History and Memory , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 520min
At Milliken's Bend, Louisiana, a Union force composed predominantly of former slaves met their Confederate adversaries in one of the bloodiest small engagements of the war. This important fight received some attention in the North and South but soon drifted into obscurity. The fighting at Milliken's Bend occurred in June 1863, about fifteen miles north of Vicksburg on the west bank of the Mississippi River, where a brigade of Texas Confederates attacked a Federal outpost. Most of the Union defenders had been slaves less than two months before. The new African American recruits fought well, despite their minimal training, and Milliken's Bend helped prove to a skeptical northern public that black men were indeed fit for combat duty. Soon after the battle, accusations swirled that Confederates had executed some prisoners taken from the "Colored Troops." The charges eventually led to a congressional investigation and contributed to the suspension of prisoner exchanges between the North and South. The battle contributed to southerner's increasing fears of slave insurrection and heightened their anxieties about emancipation. In the North, it helped foster a commitment to allow free blacks and former slaves to take part in the war to end slavery. And for African Americans, both free and enslaved, Milliken's Bend symbolized their never-ending struggle for freedom. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press. ungekürzt.
