The Nameless City is a horror story written by American writer H. P. Lovecraft in January 1921 and first published in the November 1921 issue of the amateur press journal The Wolverine. It is often considered the first Cthulhu Mythos story."The Nameless City" of the story's title is an ancient ruin located somewhere in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, and is older than any human civilization. In ancient times, the Nameless City was built and inhabited by an unnamed race of reptiles with a body shaped like a cross between a crocodile and a seal with a strange head common to neither, involving a protruding forehead, horns, lack of a nose, and an alligator-like jaw. These beings moved by crawling; thus, the architecture of the city has very low ceilings and some places are too low for a human being to stand upright. Their city was originally coastal, but, when the seas receded, it was left in the depths of a desert. This resulted in the decline and eventual ruin of the city. Language: English. Tripping the Night Fantastic is essentially a whodunit, but one that is far from the traditional. There is a murder, there is a sleuth, and there is a solution, but in tone and humour it is somewhere between House, M.D. and Trainspotting.  Charlie Deavon is a British author who meets a fan (the sexually troublesome Amelia Heart) in a pub. The following morning she is found dead.  The main suspect in the case is Simon, Charlie's agent. Having avoided the police, Charlie, Simon, and the local bartender try to solve the case together. The three men, what with the stress of it all, turn to a new drug called Merlin, which allows them to control and share hallucinations.  From then on, they trip and hallucinate their way through to the story's conclusion.  Charlie and co. like to drink. Only they don't so much go for a drink as go for a splash. They wallow in it like mad fish. It really is no way to go about solving crimes. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Alan R. Gron. White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876-1916) - and the name of the story's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild.  Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The audiobook also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.  As early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations, including a 1991 film starring Ethan Hawke and a 2018 Netflix original. ungekürzt. What would you do if a wildfire swept through your area without warning? In October 1908, a wildfire swept through northeast Michigan and consumed 900 homes and two million acres of farms and forest. Despite the valiant efforts of the farmers, lumbermen, and shopkeepers, only Lake Huron could quench the flames. With no fire watch towers, spotting aircraft, telephones, or organized firefighting and only limited telegraph, warnings were too few and too late. Devil in the North Woods accurately depicts the fire's genesis, growth, and aftermath. The story's real-life protagonist, 10-year-old Henry Hardies, survived the fire but family did not. Relying on Henry's personal recollections and author Walt Shiel's faithful recreation of time and place, the book vividly brings Henry's ordeal to life. Devil in the North Woods contrasts the terror of nature's destruction with a chronicle of family, love, sorrow, and recovery. The story leaves the reader buoyed by faith in the resilience of the human spirit and belief in love's ability to germinate amid the ashes of ruin. ungekürzt. Language: English. Honestly, I couldn’t even ask God why. I was reaping what I had sown. I deserved death because I’d sown so much death during my life. For years, I’d lied, manipulated, and terrorized. I lay there with bulging eyes, staring at Jimmy’s knife, not even attempting to beg for a speedy death. As thoughts of my treacherous past blurred my vision, I knew that I didn’t deserve the easy way out.  For so long, I had suppressed the events of my past that made me the woman that I became. Yet as I faced death, those events came to mind.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nicole Small, Cary Hite. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/053324/bk_adbl_053324_sample.mp3. Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Charles Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages. Heart of Darkness raises questions about imperialism and racism. Originally issued as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine to celebrate the 1,000th edition of the magazine, Heart of Darkness has been widely re-published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness 67th on their list of the 100 best novels in English of the 20th century. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Neufeld.
