This play deals with an incident which occurred early in the history of the colony of New South Wales, Australia - the so-called "Rum Rebellion".New South Wales struggled as a new British penal colony, facing drought, famine, social incoherence, and the development of an intransigent military cartel which did not lose any opportunity to exploit the circumstances. Together with an entrepreneurial landowner society led by John Macarthur, they made the task of the Governor, William Bligh (of The Bounty) very difficult. The resulting crescendo of conflict boiled over into Australia's only military coup, in which the full forces of the New South Wales Corps marched up and arrested Bligh, holding him under house arrest for a year before allowing him to set sail from Sydney Harbour. The stage play has an indigenous narrator, the bemused and somewhat indignant Tedbury, whose contact with the invading community does not end well.As far as possible, the play respects actual historical facts and attempts to illustrate a recurring pattern of conflicts and motivations of individuals in power recognizable even in the present day. Narration by Sarah BacallerRoles performed by Peter Tucker, David Prickett, Alan Weyman, Elizabeth Chambers, Amanda Friday, Phil Benson, Graham Scott, Denis Daly, Graham Scott, Mark Crowle-Groves, Noel Badrian, Craig Franklin, and Andrew Coleman.Sound effects were produced by Peter Tucker. [W]e observed the enemy marching down towards us in three columns, at 10 they formed their line of battle, which was at least six deep, having their flanks covered by a thick wood on each side, into which they threw above 3,000 Canadians and Indians, who gauled us much; the regulars then marched briskly up to us, and gave us their first fire, at about 50 yards distance, which we did not return, as it was General Wolfe's express Orders not to fire till they came within 20 yards of us.... (The British sergeant-major of Gen. Hopson's Grenadiers) On September 13, 1759, a battle was fought on the Plains of Abraham outside the old city of Québec. It was one of the turning-point battles in world history. Thanks to the British victory and the events that followed, Canada went from being a colony of France (New France) to being a colony of Great Britain. This permanently changed Canadian history. In many ways the outcome of the battle brought about several American attempts to seize Canada during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Ultimately it ensured that when Canada became an independent country it was part of the British Commonwealth with an Anglophone majority and a Francophone minority. Frictions over cultural and political issues between the English Canadians and the Québécois, dating back to the battle, continue to impact the state of affairs in Canada today. While the battle had a profound impact, it has also been romanticized and mythologized beyond even epic proportions. Though often forgotten today, more than 250 years after the battle, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham was the culmination of a long siege. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Turbett. The second wave has been unleashed...The forces of the Warsaw Pact storm west over the Inner German Border and unleash devastation on the first days of the conflict. Among the NATO defenders of West Germany are Captain Kurt Mohr and his company of Leopard tanks. Outgunned and outnumbered, the men must conduct vital delaying operations until reinforcements can mobilize to stop the communists in their tracks. After a harrowing battle to prevent the Czechoslovakian army from capturing a key bridge over the Danube, Mohr and his tanks are ordered to reinforce a battalion of grenadiers. The mission: buy time for the rest of his panzer brigade to prepare defenses around the key city of Landshut. Attacked by endless waves of enemy tanks, infantry, and aircraft, they must hold up at all costs, even while the pressure mounts and the number of casualties skyrockets. To make matters worse, Mohr’s leadership is challenged at every step by internal politics that jeopardize the mission and his men’s lives. Each critical decision brings the company to the brink of tearing itself apart, posing a threat as dangerous as the enemy itself. Can Mohr keep his men together and stay alive, or will his first day of war be his last?Excerpt from the book:“After increasing his magnification on the PERI scope, Mohr noticed infantry climbing out the roof hatches of several carriers. No doubt, they were there to suppress enemy armor with anti-tank missiles and RPGs while the rest of their regiment rushed forward. It was bad news. With a range of three kilometers, the wire-guided missiles could badly damage or even destroy a Leopard tank. If the infantry got close enough, the rocket-propelled grenades would burrow right through his thin rear armor. The OT-64s had to die.” ungekürzt. Language: English.
