Maria Cecilia Sophia Anna Kalogeropoulos wurde am 2. Dezember 1923 als Tochter griechischer Einwanderer in New York geboren. Ihr Vater änderte 1929 den Familiennamen in Callas, als er in Manhattan eine Apotheke eröffnete. Schon im Alter von acht Jahren erhielt sie ihren ersten Klavierunterricht. Ihren ersten öffentlichen Auftritt absolvierte sie bereits 1938 während ihrer Studienzeit am Athener Konservatorium. 1942 sang sie in Athen erstmals die Partie der "Tosca". Ihr Stimmumfang reichte über fast drei Oktaven. Zudem besaß ihre Stimme eine außerordentliche Flexibilität. Ihr Repertoire umfasste 43 vollständige Partien, sowie Arien aus mehr als 30 Opern. Ihr großer Verdienst waren ihre Interpretationen von Belcanto-Opern der alten Meister Rossini, Donizetti und Bellini, mit denen sie späteren Kolleginnen wie Montserrat Caballè den Weg weisen konnte. Mitte der 50er befand sich die Callas auf dem Zenith ihrer Karriere. Anfang der 60er Jahre machte sie vor allem in den Illustrierten durch ihre Affäre mit dem griechischen Milliardär Aristoteles Onassis von sich reden. 1969 spielte die Callas die Medea im gleichnamigen Film von Pier Paolo Pasolini. Am 16. September 1977 starb sie im Alter von nur 53 Jahren in Paris an einer Lungenembolie. Die "Primadonna assoluta" hat ein umfangreiches musikalisches Erbe hinterlassen. Von 1952 bis zu ihrem Abschied von den Opernbühnen im Juli 1965 hat sie die meisten ihrer Partien auf Schallplatten aufgenommen. Neben einem Dutzend von Studioaufnahmen hinterließ sie eine große Anzahl von Konzertaufnahmen, die heute noch jeden Opernliebhaber entzücken. Sie gilt noch heute als die Opern-Diva schlechthin.
