The first illustrated book on mudlarking that tells the captivating stories of forgotten people through objects recovered from the river Thames.Combining insights from 200 eclectic objects discovered on the Thames foreshore, meticulous historical research and contextual illustrations, Mudlark'd uncovers the hidden histories of forgotten people from all over the world. Beginning in each case with a particular find, Malcolm Russell tells the stories of the people who owned, made or used such objects, revealing the habits, customs and crafts not only of those living in London but also of those passing through, from continental Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia. In the 18th and 19th centuries London was the busiest port in the world, exchanging goods, ideas, people and power with every continent. The Thames long acted as London's water source, shipyard, thoroughfare and rubbish dump. Its banks have been densely packed with taverns, brothels, markets and workplaces, and scavengers - known as mudlarks - have scoured them since at least the 18th century. Consequently, the Thames today offers a repository of intriguing objects that evoke ways of life long forgotten. A delicate bone hair pin uncovers the story of Roman ornatrices - enslaved hairdressers. A counterfeit coin reveals the heritage of millions of Australians. Glass beads expose the brutal dynamics of the transatlantic slave trade. Clay tobacco pipes uncover the lives of Edwardian women parachutists and Victorian magicians. A scrap of Tudor cloth illuminates the stories of Dutch and French religious refugees. The book also includes a primer, giving step-by-step advice on how to mudlark on tidal rivers and how to identify commonly made finds.

There does not seem to be any shortage of spirits and apparitions in this world, and they do not seem to be limited by time, place or situation. There is of course the standard bearer of haunted locales, the scary “haunted house” on the dead end street of a dark isolated neighborhood, but there are also instances of haunting that take on many more myriad forms than this commonly overused trope might lead you to believe. There are haunted taverns, haunted amusement parks, and even haunted subway systems. These events seem to transcend any kind of label or classification that we attempt to put upon them. Whatever the entities may be that are behind these strange occurrences, it is readily apparent that they can manifest anywhere or anytime completely unhindered by any barrier, physical or otherwise. But if we were to look into these strange hauntings a little bit further we just might find that these frightful specters are just as afraid of us as we are of them. Like some residents of a haunted estate have found that most of the ghosts they encountered were more frightened of them than anything else. The spirits seem genuinely startled when they encounter the living residents of the home as if their mere presence overwhelms them with the sad realization of the lives that they have lost. So these poor lost souls and earthbound spirits are forever relegated to the hallways of homes, the byways of train stations and the cursed grounds of amusement parks.... Sometimes you have to wonder, is it the dead that haunt the living or the living that haunt the dead? Here is a preview of what's inside.... It is 1896 in Chicago - which means it has been three years since Inspector Alastair Ransom beat the charge of murder of a cleric, but his enemies have been working behind the scenes to hang him for the very same crime.Such a thing may appear impossible given double-jeopardy laws, but the Chicago Archdiocese and other powerful groups want Ransom's head. The book opens with this battle being waged by Ransom from behind bars. However, he is soon badly needed on a case involving mutilated torsos - that is, headless and limbless bodies that have been brutally ripped apart. With the help of the trusted people around him - Jane Tewes, her daughter, Gabby, Dr. Christian Fenger, Philo Keane, and Henry Bosch - Ransom begins to put the pieces together. Pieces that include a mutilated tattoo, the nature of the rips and tears to the flesh, and strange activity at the Chicago shipyards, the local taverns, the race track, and the streets of Chicago in 1896.All this during a time when Inspector Alastair Ransom is getting closer to understanding what truly happened at the Haymarket riot which maimed Ransom, years ago. After receiving the head of a childhood friend delivered in a box, Ransom learns that Tony is connected to both the old crime and today's crimes. Tony is now a friend who is among the series of victims to the butcher - or butchers - leaving torsos about the city. At the same time, Alastair is falling even more deeply in love with Dr. Jane Tewes and her daughter, Gabby, with whom he now closely works, as Gabby Tewes had become Fenger's assistant in the morgue. The final unmasking of the pure evil at work in the city comes clear when Ransom pulls back the layers and follows the paths that lead to justice.Hypnosis and old-fashioned police work begin to focus Ransom's search for answers to both the crime in Chicago history and the current series of brutal murders terrifying all of Chicago. ungekürzt. Told with consummate skill by the writer of the best-selling, award-winning A Civil Action, The Lost Painting is a remarkable synthesis of history and detective story.  An Italian village on a hilltop near the Adriatic coast, a decaying palazzo facing the sea, and in the basement, cobwebbed and dusty, lit by a single bulb, an archive unknown to scholars. Here, a young graduate student from Rome, Francesca Cappelletti, makes a discovery that inspires a search for a work of art of incalculable value, a painting lost for almost two centuries.  The artist was Caravaggio, a master of the Italian Baroque. He was a genius, a revolutionary painter, and a man beset by personal demons. Four hundred years ago, he drank and brawled in the taverns and streets of Rome, moving from one rooming house to another, constantly in and out of jail, all the while painting works of transcendent emotional and visual power. He rose from obscurity to fame and wealth, but success didn’t alter his violent temperament. His rage finally led him to commit murder, forcing him to flee Rome a hunted man. He died young, alone, and under strange circumstances. Caravaggio scholars estimate that between 60 and 80 of his works are in existence today. Many others - no one knows the precise number - have been lost to time. Somewhere, surely, a masterpiece lies forgotten in a storeroom, or in a small parish church, or hanging above a fireplace, mistaken for a mere copy. Prizewinning author Jonathan Harr embarks on an spellbinding journey to discover the long-lost painting known as The Taking of Christ - its mysterious fate and the circumstances of its disappearance have captivated Caravaggio devotees for years. After Francesca Cappelletti stumbles across a clue in that dusty archive, she tracks the painting across a continent and hundreds of years of history. But it is not until she meets Sergio Benedetti, an art restorer working in Ireland, that she finally manages to a ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Campbell Scott.
