Four Classic Albums
"The Opener", "New Trombone", "Blues-ette" und "Soul Trombone" Fuller wurde 1934 in Detroit geboren. Seine Eltern waren Jamaikaner und starben, als er noch jung war. In der Folge wurde er im Waisenhaus erzogen. Er kam erst spät zur Musik, begann in der High School Tenorhorn zu spielen und wechselte im Alter von 16 Jahren zur Posaune. Fuller war ein Schulfreund des Jazzbassisten Paul Chambers und des Jazztrompeters Donald Byrd. Er hatte zudem Kontakt zu so bekannten Musikern wie Tommy Flanagan, Thad Jones und Milt Jackson. Im Jahr 1953 verließ er Detroit, um für zwei Jahre in der Armee zu dienen. Dort spielte er in einer Band mit den Brüdern Cannonball und Nat Adderley. Nach dem Militärdienst wurde Fuller Mitglied im Quintett von Yusef Lateef, einem weiteren bekannten Musiker aus Detroit. 1957 zog er mit diesem Quintett nach New York, wo er seine ersten Aufnahmen als Bandleader für Prestige Records einspielte. Alfred Lion von Blue Note Records hörte Fuller in den späten 1950er Jahren mit Miles Davis spielen und engagierte ihn als Sideman für Plattenaufnahmen von Sonny Clark und John Coltrane. Fullers Mitarbeit an Coltranes Album Blue Train ist wahrscheinlich seine bekannteste Plattenaufnahme.- Shop: odax

Johnson's Whacks
Washington D.C. native James "Osie" Johnson was one of Jazz music's great Swing drummers. From 1951 to 1953 Johnson worked with the great Earl Hines and Illinois Jacquet during the 1950 's and can be heard on albums by Mose Allison, Zoot Sims, Paul Gonzalves and many others. Osie went on to become one of New York's most in demand studio and television drummers. His arrangements included a hit by singer Dinah Washington, "Fool That I Am." Presented here is his classic 1955 album featuring two different units. On "Johnson's Whacks," "Osmosis" and "Flute to Boot" the combo is the Osie Johnson Quintet featuring Benny Powell (trombone) Frank Wess (tenor sax, flute) Dick Katz (piano) Eddie Jones (bass) and Osie Johnson (drums). The remaining tracks feature Osie's Sextet: Thad Jones (trumpet) Bill Hughes (trombone on "Catwalk") Henry Coker (trombone on "I Don't Want to Cry Anymore) Frank Wess (tenor sax, flute) Dick Katz (piano) Milt Hinton (bass) Osie Johnson (drums, vocal). Paging Mr.Proust
The Jayhawks sind schon seit Mitte der 80er Jahre eine bekannte US-amerikanische Alternative-Country-Band, deren neues Album nun von Peter Buck (REM) produziert wurde. Die Band fand sich 1985 in Minnesota zusammen. Die Gründungsmitglieder waren Mark Olson (akustische Gitarre und Gesang), Gary Louris (E-Gitarre und Gesang), Marc Perlman (Bass) und Thad Spencer (Drums). Ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum erschien 1986. Mehr Popularität erreichten sie mit Blue Earth 1987. Zu dieser Zeit zeigte die von Olson geschriebene Musik sehr starke Einflüsse von Rootsrock und Country. Ihe 1992er Album Hollywood Town Hall war sehr erfolgreich und gilt heute als eines der klassischen Alben des Alternative Country. Die Band tourte ausgiebig und nahm dann das Album Tomorrow The Green Grass (1995) auf. Der Einfluss von geradlinigem Rock im ironischen "Big Star", Psychedelia, akustischen Elementen z. B. im Titelstück und sogar einige Dubelemente wurden vermischt, während die Country-Orientierung des Anfangs in den Hintergrund trat. Rainy Day Music (2003) war wieder wenig produziert und akustisch, wie in den Songs "Tailspin", "Stumbling Through the Dark", "You Look So Young". Stephen McCarthy, Ex-Mitglied der Long Ryders kam zur Band und spielte Pedal Steel, Lap Steel und Banjo auf dem Album sowie E-Gitarre bei Liveshows. Remembering Phil (Original Soundtrack)
The Remembering Phil Score features: Todd Cochran: Piano, Bob Sheppard: Tenor Sax, Flute and Bass Clarinet, Roy McCurdy: Drums and John B. Williams: Bass. Special guest: Michael Wolff: Piano. The CD features original music from the film plus improvised quartet versions of the main themes. The score to Remembering Phil is acoustic jazz, in a small group setting. The instrumentation (featuring Bob Sheppard on tenor sax, flute and in an unusual role on Bass Clarinet) reflects the small ensemble cast of the film. While recurring themes do accent the narrative, there is also a strong improvisational aspect to this score. The main leitmotif is traded back and forth between John B. Williams' bass and the bass clarinet. This opens up space on the main themes (the first 5 selections on the CD) for Todd Cochran and Michael Wolff's explorations on piano, as well as Bob Sheppard's Tenor Sax.
