Troilus and Cressida , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 463min
Considered one of Chaucer’s finest poems, second only to The Canterbury Tales in richness and depth, Troilus and Cressida is a tragic love story set against the background of the siege of Troy by the Greeks. Written in the 1380s, it presents Troilus, son of Priam and younger brother of Hector, as a Trojan warrior of renown who sees, and falls deeply in love with, the beautiful Cressida. Cressida is the daughter of Calchas, a Trojan priest and seer who, having divined the eventual fall of Troy, has deserted to Agamemnon’s camp, leaving his daughter in the besieged city. With the help of Pander, friend to Troilus and uncle to Cressida, the young couple meet and merge - but with unhappy consequences. Chaucer’s long poem is cast in seven-line rhymed stanzas and is eased out of Middle English to be presented here in a lively modern verse translation by George Philip Krapp, who has retained not only the structure but its spirit. Emotions run high, the love is intense, the story unfolds with a dramatic urgency that draws the listener ever onwards; yet Chaucer is Chaucer, and there are times when a deft line, a light insinuation, suggests the smile, the benevolence and the immediacy of the author of The Canterbury Tales. Troilus and Cressida, though often overshadowed by the Tales and time (and even Shakespeare, who took up the story) is a monument in its own right in the canon of English literature. Once listened to it will never be forgotten. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Keeble. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/dhrm/000210/bk_dhrm_000210_sample.mp3. Troilus and Criseyde (Dramatised), Hörbuch, Digital, 113min
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde by poet and writer Lavinia Greenlaw. One of the great works of English literature, this powerful, compelling story explores love from its first tentative beginnings through to passionate sensuality and eventual tragic disillusionment. Lavinia Greenlaw's new version for radio brings Chaucer's language up-to-date for a modern audience while remaining true to his original poetic intention. After seeing the beautiful widow Criseyde at the temple in Troy, Troilus falls instantly in love with her. Inexperienced in love, he is unable to act on his feelings and locks himself in his room to compose love songs. Criseyde's Uncle Pandarus becomes the matchmaker for the couple, but what will happen when Criseyde is handed over to the Greeks at the gates of Troy to join her 'traitor' father? The cast includes Tom Ferguson as Troilus, Maxine Peake as Criseyde and Malcolm Raeburn as Pandarus. Also starring Kathryn Hunt, Kevin Doyle, Terence Mann and Declan Wilson. Directed by Susan Roberts. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Ferguson, Maxine Peake. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bbcw/004071/bk_bbcw_004071_sample.mp3. Reflections on Shakespeare's Troilus & Cressida , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 228min
Troilus and Cressida reveals William Shakespeare in a dark mood. Written shortly after his play Julius Caesar, it reveals another episode of a culture under stress - this time by way of Homer's epic story of the war between the Greeks and Trojans. Using the insights of René Girard's mimetic theory, Gil Bailie brings the inner dynamics of Shakespeare's play to life. "Would you see Shakespeare's mind unfettered, read Troilus and Cressida." (Goethe) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gil Bailie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/112737/bk_acx0_112737_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

Troilus and Cressida: Arkangel Shakespeare, Hörbuch, Digital, 184min
Lust poses as love and ambition as patriotism in this dark and brilliant play depicting the heroic action of the Trojan War. Troy is besieged by the invading Greeks, but the young Trojan prince Troilus can think only of his love for Cressida. Her uncle Pandarus brings the two together, but after only one night news comes that Cressida must be sent to the enemy camp. There, as Troilus looks on, she yields to the wooing of the Greek Diomedes. The tragic story is undercut by the commentary of Thersites, who provides a cynical chorus. Language: English. Troilus and Criseyde , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 508min
Set during the fierce Trojan War, Troilus and Criseyde is the poignant tale of love won and lost. The beautiful Criseyde becomes the object of desire for Troilus, the son of King Priam, and he is able to win her affection through the machinations of his uncle, Pandarus. They experience a brief time of bliss together, but despite their vows of faithfulness, they are soon separated by the fortunes of war. Nevill Coghill's matchless translation skilfully transmits the genius and vigor of Chaucer's 14th-century romantic poem, widely regarded as his finest achievement. Listen as probably the greatest love poem of the Middle Ages comes alive, combining elements of comedy and tragedy to form an exquisite tale of romantic love and human frailty. ungekürzt.
