Books of a Feather: A Bibliophile Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 535min
The Covington Library is hosting an exhibit featuring John James Audubon's Birds of America. During the gala celebrating the book, Brooklyn is approached by Jared Mulrooney, the president of the National Birdwatchers Society, who urgently needs Brooklyn's skilled hands to repair a less high-profile book of Audubon drawings that's fallen victim to spilled wine. But everything runs afoul when Mulrooney is later discovered dead. Rumors fly about a motive for murder. Perhaps Mulrooney wanted to sink his claws into the pricey Audubon book, but Brooklyn believes the man died fighting off a daring thief. Soon danger circles Brooklyn's every move, and it's clear she must find answers before things really go south. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Susie Berneis. Benito Cereno , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 188min
Herman Melville wrote the 1855 novella Benito Cereno, a story about a revolt on a slaver ship, the San Dominick, off the coast of Chile in 1799. It is an adventure story which highlights the cruelty of slavery and the hopeless desperation that slaves experience. The tale begins when Captain Delano of the whaling ship Bachelor's Delight spots another ship approaching, floating listlessly with torn sails. Delano sends a boat to investigate, and a tale of horror unfolds about the mutiny on the San Dominick and the attempt of the mutineers to capture the Bachelor's Delight. An interesting feature of the novella is the way that Melville employs a third-person narrator to report Delano's opinions without any correction; on that account Benito Cereno has become a famous example of unreliable narration. ungekürzt. Quarterly Essay 42: Fair Share: Country & City in Australia , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 137min
For many decades Australia was the country that rode on the sheep's back. No more - now we are a country of mining and services. In QE42, one of Australia's most original and respected political thinkers, Judith Brett, looks at what this has meant for the country and the city in our politics and culture. The politics of independence and dependence are complicated, as the Murray-Darling water reform shows. And the question remains: What will be the fate of rural and regional Australia in an era of economic rationalisation, water cutbacks, climate change, droughts, and flooding rain? Does urban Australia care for or understand the country anymore? Can the country renew itself and make a case again for its central place at the heart of the nation? ungekürzt. Language: English. Jacob’s Room , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 411min
Published in 1922, the same year as Ulysses and The Waste Land, Jacob’s Room is Virginia Woolf’s own modernist manifesto. Ostensibly a study of a young man’s life on the eve of the Great War, it is really a bomb thrown into the world of the conventional novel, as she attempts to capture the richness and randomness of life’s encounters. Jacob Flanders is a mere point of contact between a crowd of people, appearing and disappearing in a tableau in which all is flux, without certainty and without a controlling viewpoint. But it seems that the author could not maintain this rigorous impersonality, and the radical technique breaks down, so that we finally see Jacob as a person, just as his world is blown apart. The Turning Wheel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 52min
If, after a great struggle, the East were to prevail over the world, what sort of civilization would be imposed by the victors? Would it be an oriental version of the societies we know - or might the great old culture be superimposed upon what was left of Western technology? The story is set in a postapocalyptic future where global civilization is governed by a hierarchical, religious society centered around belief in karmic-based reincarnation metaphorically viewed as moving forward or backward on a turning wheel. The society presented is class driven, apparently with Caucasians ("Caucs") at the bottom and Asians and Native Americans at the top. Above all is the god/messiah, the Bard "Elron Hu" (that is to say, "Elron Hu, Bard"), whose spiritual plan involves one becoming "clear" - an obvious jab at L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics, the self-help book that had been released a few years before. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mike Vendetti. The Grand Slam: Bobby Jones, America, and the Story of Golf , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1146min
In the wake of the stock-market crash and the dawn of the Great Depression, a ray of light emerged from the world of sports. In the summer of 1930, Bobby Jones, a 28-year-old amateur golfer, mounted a campaign against the record books. In four months, this natural, self-taught player conquered the British Amateur Championship, the British Open, the United States Open, and finally the United States Amateur Championship, an achievement so extraordinary that writers dubbed it the Grand Slam. No one has ever repeated it. Yet, soon after the Grand Slam, Jones made the shocking announcement that he was retiring from the game. His abrupt disappearance from the public eye helped create the mythological image of this hero from the Golden Age of sports that endures to this day. Mark Frost uses a wealth of original research to provide an unprecedented intimate portrait of golf great Bobby Jones. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Grover Gardner.
