The US aircraft carrier patrolling the Western Pacific Ocean is severely damaged by a surprise salvo of cruise missiles. While the Russian government officially apologizes, claiming it was the result of fire control accident during a training exercise, it was instead a calculated provocation. With the US Pacific fleet already severely under strength, the Russian president decides that the US response is a clear indication of their weakness, militarily and politically, and initiates a bold plan. Political unrest is spreading through the Eastern European states. The Russian Northern Fleet moves swiftly in the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian army is moving west to the border, and Russian Baltic and Black Sea Fleets are mobilized. In one bold strike, the Russian army moves to reoccupy a large number of the industrialized areas of the former USSR while blockading the vital sea passages through which the world's oil and natural gas transit. To make matters worse, Russia's Special Forces have wired every major oil and natural gas pipeline with explosives. If the US makes one move to thwart Russia, they'll destroy them all. The US is risking disaster if it acts, but the alternative is quite possibly worse. Torn between the unthinkable and the impossible, the only possible move - to launch an attack on all fronts, simultaneously. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Kramer. The Bram Stoker award-winning author of A Head Full of Ghosts adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense that recalls Stephen King’s Misery, Ruth Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood, and Jack Ketchum’s cult hit The Girl Next Door. Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, "None of what’s going to happen is your fault". Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: "Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world." Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amy Landon. Letters of a Woman Homesteader is a frontier classic by Elinore Pruitt Stewart, a widowed young mother who accepted an offer to assist with a ranch in Wyoming. In Stewart's delightful collection of letters, she describes her homesteading experiences to her former employer, Mrs. Coney. Stewart's charming descriptions of work, travels, neighbors, animals, land and sky have an authentic feel. The West comes alive, and everyday life becomes captivating. Stewart's writing is clear, witty, and entertaining. Clear as a bell, concise yet comprehensive, replete with localisms and skillfully rendered frontier humor, it makes one want to toss the PC and reference library into the trash and move to some unspoiled wilderness. The 26 letters are brief and tell about her life on the ranch in the early 1900s. The author frequently and unnecessarily apologizes for being too wordy; she begs forgiveness for many "faults," like being forgetful, ungrateful, inconsistent and indifferent, all without apparent cause. On occasion, language reflects the racial prejudice of the time. Many times in Letters of a Woman Homesteader Stewart attempts to portray the culturally diverse characters she meets by writing their various dialects as they sound. Elinore Pruitt Stewart was a remarkable woman. After enjoying this book, readers will be equipped with a whole new view of not only life in the early 20th century but of the impact woman had on it. Readers of Letters of a Woman Homesteader may also enjoy the film made from it, "Heartland." Elinore also wrote "Letters on an Elk Hunt", as well as many short pieces for periodicals of the day. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gwen Hughes. It is not known who wrote the Book of Job or when it was written. It is written poetically and is considered wisdom literature. The book starts with a dialogue between God and Satan. God first brings up Job and how noble and pious he is, then Satan contends that it is so because of the wealth and comfort which God has bestowed upon him.God allows Satan to inflict suffering upon Job. As a consequence, Job loses all his wealth, his children die, and he contracts disease. Downtrodden, he then gets into a dialogue with his friends. Job questions whether God is just for the condition that he is in, while his friends are adamant that he must have done something terrible to deserve it.Dismayed by the sentiments of his friends, Job takes up the argument directly with God. He blames God for being unjust. At this point, a friend of Job, named Elihu, appears. He says to Job that God is just, but He may inflict suffering as a means to warn the world to avoid sin.God responds to Job in great detail with the explanation to mean that He has an infinitely wider perspective on how He runs the universe and that Job is not qualified to accuse Him. In order words, God asked Job to trust His wisdom, which Job did.Job apologizes to God in humility. Thereafter, his wealth and health are restored, and he is blessed with more children. He is given more than he previously possessed. The message of this book is to have faith, trust in the wisdom of God, and remain steadfast in praying and doing good deeds. Language: English. After 25-year-old Samantha Briggs leaves an initially minor sickness untreated, the illness worsens quickly and she ends up feverishly sleeping the weekend away. Her husband, Jackson, stays by her side and sees to all of her needs. But when she wakes up wearing a diaper and footie pajamas, she is furious. Jackson apologizes, but he does admit that he has always yearned to care for Samantha like a loving daddy. She soon finds herself happily immersed in a land of games, dolls, bedtime stories, and her daddy's loving care for her every need. Samantha and Jackson fall into a routine: she is an adult on the weekdays and a little girl - sometimes a baby - on the weekends. But when she slips up and embarrasses herself by behaving childishly during a stressful morning at work, she reconsiders their new relationship. Chloe joins an African Safari, to help her get over a recent abusive relationship. She has no interest in any new romance. She largely ignores the other members of the group. Mark is on the same safari, also healing from a relationship that turned sour. While no stranger to the African bush, and having led a few similar tours of his own, he has decided to come on this tour as a customer, to leave someone else to do the organizing. On the third day of the holiday they are in a game-viewing vehicle, which is high off the ground, but open to the air. They stop to look at a pride of lions close to the road. One of the male lions rushes at the vehicle and starts climbing up the side, right where Chloe is sitting. She freezes in terror. The driver grabs for his rifle and starts to bring it round to bear on the lion. At the same time, Mark, who is sitting on the same seat as her on the other side, jumps over her and shouts loudly at the lion. The lion checks himself, and then drops back down from the vehicle. Chloe is white as a sheet. Mark asks her if she's okay, and apologizes for jumping over her. She stammers out her thanks for what he did. After dinner that evening she decides that she should thank him properly, and so goes into the lounge to where he is sitting. He asks her to sit down and have her coffee with him. Midnight Express was one of the scariest movies I ever saw. It was probably one of the most horrifying films you ever saw, too. The story of Billy Hayes, an American tourist caught attempting to leave Turkey by plane in 1970 with bags of hashish taped to his stomach, for which he was subsequently jailed for five years - and, with only 42 days left to serve, resentenced to life in prison - was made into a major motion picture starring Brad Davis and written by Oliver Stone. It won numerous Academy Awards and caused the Turkish government to go on the attack around the world against the filmmakers and Hollywood over its incredibly unflattering portrait of the Turkish nation. And it turns out that the Turks were right about one thing – many key aspects of Midnight Express may have been invented by Stone.  In a new documentary film about his life, Hayes admits the movie got several aspects of his Turkish experience wrong, starting with the fact he was not an innocent, first-time drug smuggler. When he was caught, it was at least his fourth time moving hash out of the country. Hayes apologizes in Midnight Return: The Story of Billy Hayes and Turkey to the Turkish government for the negative portrayal of all Turks created by the original film. It has more than a few surprises for anyone that remembers the original.  Billy Hayes interview excerpt: "You don’t see any good Turks in the whole Midnight Express film [written by Oliver Stone]. That wasn’t true to my experience or to reality…. And in the film’s escape scene - which is like an afterthought! - he kills a guard, which I did NOT do. Big fact change. That’s not how I escaped prison." Language: English. Narrator: Bob Andelman, Billy Hayes. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bigh/001370/bk_bigh_001370_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
