William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author. He produced a large body of work including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction stories. The Voice in the Night is an uncanny story about a ship becalmed in fog in the middle of the Pacific. In the night, the watch hears a voice hailing the ship. It would seem to be a lone man in a rowing boat, but the individual does not wish to be seen. He is starving and urgently wants them to give him food - but despite this, he will not approach the ship and vehemently rejects the idea of being rescued. Instead they have to float some provisions out to him in a crate, which he takes off to a nearby island where his fiancée is dying of hunger. A few hours later he returns and tells a horrifying and incredible tale. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. Written at the start of the Great War, when his son Borys was at the Western Front, The Shadow-Line is Conrad's supreme effort to open man's eyes to the meaning of war through the stimulus of art. In many ways an autobiographical narrative, this masterpiece of his final period relates the story of a young and inexperienced sea captain whose first command finds him with a ship becalmed in tropical seas and a crew smitten with fever. As he wrestles with his conscience and with the sense of isolation that his position imposes, the captain crosses the "shadow-line" between youth and adulthood. It is the qualities, both individual and collective, needed to confront the ship's crisis that symbolize the qualities needed by humanity, not only to face evil and destruction but also to come to terms with life. ungekürzt. “Quite wonderful... Like Anne Tyler, Shelton seems to possess a nearly boundless capacity for empathy. She has the ability to make us love her characters for their faults, not in spite of them.” (Connecticut Post)Warmhearted, insightful, funny, and poignant, best-selling author Maddie Dawson takes the unfathomable ways of love and family, and celebrates [the joys of] the ordinary craziness of being human.“You know what people really need? Somebody who will listen hard and then find a way to tell them, ‘It’s not all your fault. It’s going to work out fine. Don’t give up.’” So advice columnist ‘Dear Lily’ Brown deeply believes. But Lily could write a letter to herself, asking what to do about an ex-husband who still wants her dating advice, how to redecorate the family home she’s kept exactly the same since her parents died tragically young, and how to move on with her strangely becalmed life…And oh, yes, what to do when your wild-child estranged sister storms back into town, blowing your nicely arranged life into disarray.“As her protagonist tries to learn that she cannot and does not have to control everyone around her and tries to enjoy the "fun" of a dysfunctional family life, Dawson delves into family relationships with humor and empathy, making this a pleasurable read.” (Booklist)“Shelton’s greatest talent is a gift for juxtaposing comedy and tragedy to the pulsing beat of the modern-day mating dance.” (BookPage) ungekürzt. An aging man is nearing the end of his days and he wants to have one last adventure at sea. He purchases a 30-foot sailboat named Noelle and takes her on his great journey. What follows is a thought-provoking trip inward as we discover what drives this man, and we learn that he could be anyone - even the listener.  Jane, a woman in her mid-eighties, sells him Noelle with everything on board. Below deck he finds reflections of Noelle’s past - tattered sailing charts with routes highlighted by Jane and her husband, items collecting dust that make him wonder about their journeys.  The Book of Seamanship teaches him the basics of sailing, preparing him for his trip. He makes the needed repairs and plans his next step. After talking with Jane, he discovers she and her husband had planned to sail to Tonga, a dream unfulfilled. A carefully folded pristine chart remains on board, with not a single line drawn to the remote islands of Tonga, a 2500-mile journey.  Now he knows where he must take Noelle.  And so begins the journey of a dying man, a man who is preparing to sail away and never return. He thinks of Kathryn, his late wife, and reminisces about the past. He faces storms and becalmed seas and sleeps under the stars. Upon reaching Tonga, he makes a new friend, Lepa, who guides him in his travels through the local islands.  The Last Sunrise follows a man’s love affair with nature as it challenges him during his voyage of self-discovery. Humbled by the ocean, alone with his thoughts, he is drawn into utter peacefulness - his last passage home. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: George Napier. Three previously unpublished short stories by the great Patrick O'Brian - Noughts and Crosses, Two's Company and No Pirates Nowadays. Noughts and Crosses: When Sullivan and Ross decide to go shark fishing among the atolls of the Great Barrier Reef little do they know what awaits them. With their schooner beached for cleaning they take a small whaler out to sea, but when the very devil of a storm turns the whole of the sea white, it drives them to the nearest atoll for shelter. It is only when they set out once again that they discover the seas are now filled with sharks, driven to a bloodlust by the smell of their butchered fellows that clings to the whaler. Becalmed and surrounded by the world's most fearsome predators, Sullivan and Ross discover that the hunters and become the hunted. Two's Company: The lighthouse was one of the most lonely in the world, guarding a dangerous reef in the cold northern seas. It therefore seemed a good idea to Sullivan and Ross that they both be its keepers; after all, two's company. But long months of isolation and boredom can test even the stoutest of friendships. So when a great storm deposits the carcass of a huge whale on the rocks, attracting to it flocks of hungry seabirds and packs of deadly sharks, and later the arrival of two unexpected guests, it provides the two friends with a welcome distraction from their tedium. Yet as the months drag on, they find that there is only so long that man can live in peace with his fellow. No Pirates Nowadays: As their schooner inches through the dense yellow fog of the northern Pacific, Ross is beginning to regret agreeing to Sullivan's latest plan. Their search for the island of Sakhalien, to hunt for precious sea-otters, is leading them nowhere. The appearance of a fellow ship should be cause to lift their mood, yet the captain and swarthy Malay crew of the Santa Maria leave Ross feeling all the more uneasy. But when their paths cross once again it is Su ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Hardy. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/hcuk/001879/bk_hcuk_001879_sample.mp3.
