Little Suite for Autumn (1979) by Peter Schickele (1935- ) 16. Oblivion (1982) with Kevin Zakresky, piano by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) * World Premier Recording Of the approximately 50 duos that Ignace Pleyel (1757-1831) wrote, Grand Duo No. 1 in C Major, Op. 69 expresses his typical good humor and inventiveness. Pleyel, a very successful composer, was considered one of the most popular and prolific in his time, with his works even performed in America. The 24th son of 38 children of an impoverished Austrian schoolmaster, Pleyel studied with Joseph Haydn and became the organist at the Strasbourg Cathedral. In 1791, when the French Revolution closed his post as organist, Pleyel moved to London where he directed rival concerts to those led by Haydn. In 1795 Pleyel moved to Paris where he founded a highly successful music-publishing house and the Pleyel Piano Company. Three Rags for Violin and Viola was written in 1996 by New York City native William Ryden (b.1939). A well known composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, Ryden has written concertos, chamber music, musicals and over 250 rags for solo piano. This duo, recorded here for the first time, captures the quintessential feeling of ragtime in rhythm and melody. Duo for Violin and Viola was commissioned by the Classic Strings Duo and premiered in May 2009. Written by Martha Craig (b.1978) of Virginia, this duo incorporates several different styles of music including tango and jazz. It is an entertaining piece with the two instruments dancing their way through the melodies and pizzicato passages. Duo No. 2 in F Major comes from Three Duos WoO 27 by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) and was written in 1792 for the principal clarinet and bassoon players in the orchestra at the court in Bonn, Germany. As with most of his salon music, Beethoven did not assign an opus number to these stunning duos, which have been transcribed for violin and viola. Until recently, the early, unpublished works of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) were entirely unknown. In 1982 the Sibelius family donated all his manuscripts to the University of Helsinki library. This allowed scholars to catalog and publish numerous works that Sibelius had written in his youth. The warm and lyrical Duo in C Major dates from 1891-1892 and reflects Sibelius' love of nature and his native Finland, with hints of the violin concerto to come. American composer Peter Schickele (b.1935) often stayed with his friends, Gil and Mary Stott, while visiting his alma mater, Swarthmore College. In October 1979, Schickele wrote Little Suite for Autumn as a thank you note for them since they played violin and viola. This duo has five short movements and is very programmatic, incorporating sounds of autumn such as rustling tree branches and leaves swirling in the wind. Born in Argentina to Italian parents, Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) moved to New York City with his family while still a child. There he was exposed to both jazz and classical music. At age eight his father gave him a bandoneon, a type of concertina popular in Argentina, and Piazzolla became quite a virtuoso on it. In his compositions, he merged the structure of sophisticated music with the passion of the tango. Oblivion, one of his most popular tangos, became widely known through the soundtrack of Mario Bellocchio's film, Enrico IV (1984). This piece was arranged for piano trio by José Bragato, the cellist in several of Piazzolla's ensembles. Kevin and Bryan Matheson - The Classic Strings Duo  , "The brothers created an agreeably old-timey sound and presented very stylishly, with real flourish and attention to detail." -- Jeffrey James, Editor and International Composer, New York City  , Kevin and Bryan were received with critical acclaim at their Carnegie Weill Recital Hall début as part of the Ibla Grand Prize competition winners' tour. The duo has been recognized for it's mesmerizing and spirited performances - two perfect virtuosos, playing as one. Kevin and Bryan are passionate about performing and promoting works featuring the violin-viola duo and enjoy working with composers to broaden the repertoire.  , As founding members of the Rainier Trio and Saturn String Ensemble, they have been heard in frequent concerts, on the trio's first CD, the premier recording of Matthew Barbre's String Quartet No. 1 and with opera singers at the Vocal Arts and Music Festival. Kevin and Bryan have performed as guest soloists with the Irish Sinfonietta Orchestra in New York City, and for nine seasons have been concertmaster and principal violist of the Viva Vivaldi Chamber Orchestra, which has recorded for Centaur Records. They have performed in the Ameropa International Chamber Music Festival in Prague and were concertmaster and principal violist of the festival orchestra. For eight seasons Kevin and Bryan served as concertmaster and principal violist in the RMA Chamber Orchestra. As frequent soloists with the orchestra, they performed numerous concerts in the southeastern United States and in Ireland, including performing in the prestigious West Cork Chamber Music Festival and on radio, twice for former Virginia Governor Mark Warner and on the orchestra's first CD. The orchestra gave the world premier performance of Richard Ratner's Andante for Strings at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage in a joint performance with musicians from Hong Kong and Macao.  , The Classic Strings Duo and Rainier Trio receive funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and are listed in the Performing Arts Tour Directory. Melodiya Chamber Ensemble
The Melodiya Chamber Ensemble has been in existence for nearly 20 years. It's three main participants were soloists of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Violinist Adolf Bruk was the concertmaster of the Bolshoi Theater as well as the director of the Bolshoi Chamber Orchestra for 15 years, performing in some of the best concert halls in the former Soviet Union. The orchestra has many recordings, among which are those with renowned singers of the sixties and seventies including Eugene Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova, and Irina Arkhipova. Harpist Olga Ortenberg-Rakitchenkov, the niece of Adolf Bruk was the principal of the Bolshoi Orchestra. In 1974 she won first place in the International Harp Competition in Geneva Switzerland. She has toured with European and Russian orchestras, performed solo recitals, and made recordings for both radio and television. Her husband, violist Sergey Rakitchenkov, was the winner of the Soviet Union-wide viola competition in 1980 and worked as principal of the viola section in the Bolshoi Theater. In December 1979, Adolf emigrated from the Soviet Union with his wife Inga and their two children. They ended up settling in the San Francisco Bay Area where Adolf became the associate concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. After being denied permission for many years, Olga, Sergey and their daughter Liza were finally allowed to immigrate in 1987. Nearly 8 years had passed, but their families were reunited at long last. In 1988 Sergey obtained a permanent position in the viola section of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, and in 1989 Olga too joined the orchestra. They continue to work there today, Sergey as Associate Principal and Olga as Principal. The idea to form Melodiya Chamber Group was a natural outcome of the longed-for family reunion. In concert, the group has performed pieces written for ensembles, one or two instruments. An expansive and varied collection of music, spanning styles and centuries, has been the result of this collaboration. Some of the works they've played are by Tomaso Vitali, Arcongello Corelli, Rameau, Marin Marais, Purcell, Telemann, J.S. Bach, J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach, C.P. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Franz Joseph Hayden, Rossini, Alessandro Rolla, Hummel, Brahms, Spohr, Schubert, Schumann, Max Bruch, Mikhail Glinka, Glazunov, Debussy, Ravel, Max Reger, Ernst Toch, Carlos Salzedo, Hindemith, Bartok, Frank Bridge, Prokofiev, Alexander Baltin, and Piazzola to name a few. The contemporary composer Dmitry Smirnov, who currently resides in England, also wrote and dedicated several compositions to the ensemble. This CD includes studio recordings as well as live performances and is the result of numerous requests of Melodiya patrons and fans. Melodiya Group apologizes for the ambient noise audible in several of the recordings, but feels that it is important to preserve the feeling of a live music atmosphere.- Shop: odax

Affairs of the Heart
The Complete Mélodies of Paul Paray The renowned French conductor and composer, Paul Paray, was born in 1886 in Le Tréport. After studying music at the Maîtrise Saint-Evode in Rouen where he composed his first works, he continued his musical studies at the Paris Conservatory. Paray was awarded the coveted Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1911 for his cantata, Yanitza. From 1911-1913 at the Villa Medici in Rome he composed most of his mélodies. Paray was elected associate conductor of the Lamoureux Orchestra of Paris in 1919 and named director of that ensemble the following year. In successive years, he was to assume several other conducting posts: at the Concerts Colonne, Monte Carlo, the Paris Opera, the National Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra-with which he made several highly acclaimed recordings and then, for the remainder of his life, as guest conductor throughout the world. Paray left an all too small but diverse corpus of works that includes three symphonies, a Fantasy for piano and orchestra, a Mass, an oratorio, a ballet, cantatas, chamber music, sonatas, piano pieces, and some choral music. He died in 1979 at Monte Carlo at age ninety-three. Paray's poetic impetus is given free rein in his exquisite mélodies. This recording represents the complete known works for solo voice of Paul Paray. They are all published by Editions Jobert, Paris. This is first complete recording of his songs, 'Affairs of the Heart.' Also included here are premiere recordings of his three songs for choir and orchestra. The CD booklet contains original language texts (French and Latin) with English translations as well as program notes on each of the works recorded. After winning several scholarships she took up vocal studies at New Orleans' Loyola University with Mary Tortorich and Larry Wyatt. She has been awarded many prizes in opera auditions of different cities of the USA and has continued studies with Jan Albright and Eugene Bossart. She performs solo works in orchestral concerts and chamber music recitals and often appears in opera, oratorio and Mass performances. Nadine Deleury, cellist, was born in Arras, France, near Paul Paray's native city, Le Tréport. Following studies at the Paris Conservatory with André Navarra and with Aldo Parisot at Yale University, she moved to Detroit where she holds the position of principal chair in the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra and teaches cello at Oakland University, among many other musical activities. Adam Stepniewski is a graduate of the prestigious Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. Prior to his present position as Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, he was Assistant Concertmaster of the Radio Orchestra of Copenhagen and of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. Eric Everett, a vocal student of Mjerial Bigalli and Mario Laurenti, has performed with the Florida Lyric Opera Company and is a frequent soloist with the Assumption Grotto Choir and Orchestra. Eduard Perrone studied piano with Lee Luvisi, composition with Moritz Bomhard, and orchestral conducting with Jorge Mester. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1978. He is currently devoted to performing, recording and publishing, in cooperation with Editions Jobert, Paris, the music of Paul Paray. The Assumption Grotto Orchestra & Choir, Detroit, Michigan From the Critics... 'This two-disk set of Paray's complete songs is a labor of love. Indeed, the best of these songs deserve to join the standard repertoire of the French mélodie. Paray seems to have found his own voice early on, and the craftsmanship is consistently high. Ruth Lapeyre [is] a soprano whose bright, finely focused sound seems well-suited to Paray's music....she's a sensitive and often stylish singer. Perrone clearly knows the music inside and out.' Gramophone Magazine 'In many ways [Paray's] more interesting than other contemporary French composers who enjoy considerably more celebrity. I am impressed by the sound which in the orchestral portions matches the clarity, depth, richness, and perspective of anything by the major labels.' American Record Guide 'Each work displays a sensitivity alive to the nuances of language and the preservation of mood, with a wonderful attention to creative orchestral detail. [Ruth Lapeyre] has the intimate manner necessary for this music, and achieves some splendid effects. The orchestra comes up a winner with a sensitive and nuanced performance. Perone's conducting and accompaniment invatriably find the right tempo and dynamic balance. Highly recommended to listeners and fine singers in search of fresh material alike.' Fanfare Magazine 'There is sweetness pervading this music, whether secular or sacred. If you have any affinity for the quintessentially diaphanous French touch with these matters, I can highly recommend this string of musical pearls. I confess I succumbed, especially to the orchestral songs.' Crisis Magazine.- Shop: odax

Lament & Restoration
What 9/11 Family Members and Others Have Said about "Lament and Restoration" 'I have a hard time with certain music because it brings a lot of tears, but this was wonderful. I can hear (Ron Wasserman's) message of shock, anger, sadness, questioning and acceptance through (Alison's) playing.' Robert J. Fialko, father of 29 year old 9/11 victim Jennifer Louise. 'It was very spiritual and helped me in the long-term healing process, I was coming for Paul (cousin who died in the attacks). He would have appreciated this, too.' Lisa Beatini. "'Lament and Restoration' seems to be an exceptionally clear and accurate tone poem. I hear elements of reverie, happy memories, shock, stress, horror, confused unfocused desperation, indecision, calm, hope, somewhat uncertain initiation of action, and movement toward resolution. These various elements wax and wane, dominate and fade, in a somewhat random fashion. ...this must be a very accurate depiction of the emotional state and tangible actions of people who have experienced the horror that the Crowthers have experienced. Apart from being amazingly 'graphic,' 'Lament and Restoration' is also solid and beautiful music that is a pleasure to listen to." Mac MacDonald, webmaster, september11quilts.org Performed by the GraceMusic Chamber Orchestra and conducted by former New York City Ballet Music Director, Andrea Quinn, the violin concerto was composed to embody the struggle of Alison Crowther to cope with her grief for the loss of her son through the resumption of her violin playing after a 20-year hiatus. 24-year old Welles, known worldwide as "The Man in the Red Bandanna," heroically rescued countless people before his own death in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Alison is the featured solo violinist on the recording. Paolo Michele Bordignon, the brilliant young harpsichordist, is also a featured soloist on the second piece on the disk, "Suite of Historical Dances." The orchestra is composed of members of the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet Orchestra, New York City Opera, American Ballet Theater, and other noted players. From the liner notes: "Lament and Restoration," subtitled "Concerto in one movement for Alison, Strings, and Harpsichord," is almost inseparable from both the person and institution to which it is dedicated, Alison Crowther and the Welles Crowther Trust. It tells the story of how one mother used the power of music to help overcome the grief she experienced after losing her son in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Rather than compose a requiem for the memory of the dead, Ron Wasserman searched for subject matter that would celebrate life and looking to the future in the midst of profound tragedy. In the wonderful story of how Alison put on a series of concerts in her local church, Ron found just that. The emotional needs of the piece are well served by it's moderate tempo, Baroque instrumentation, and pleasing tonality. In concert, Alison begins with spoken commentary about the loss of her son and her feelings about how the music speaks of five emotions "shock, anger, sadness, questioning, and acceptance." During the performance, as listeners both hear and see this mother play the concerto starting in desolation and moving toward healing, the audience has a reaction to more than just the music, but also to the themes of death, loss, and life that resonate with everyone. The "Suite of Historical Dances," is based on the four Bach orchestral suites, and remains faithful to their form and harmonic language almost to the end. A formal French Overture starts the piece, however, instead of a Minuet, Gavotte and Sarabande, I've updated the form with slightly more contemporary dances: Polka, Tango, Jitterbug, and Moon Walk.
