In his provocative new book, evolutionary biologist Jerry A. Coyne lays out in clear, dispassionate detail why the toolkit of science, based on reason and empirical study, is reliable, while that of religion - including faith, dogma, and revelation - leads to incorrect, untestable, or conflicting conclusions. Coyne is responding to a national climate in which over half of Americans don't believe in evolution (and congressmen deny global warming), and warns that religious prejudices and strictures in politics, education, medicine, and social policy are on the rise. Extending the best-selling works of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens, he demolishes the claims of religion to provide verifiable "truth" by subjecting those claims to the same tests we use to establish truth in science. Coyne irrefutably demonstrates the grave harm - to individuals and to our planet - in mistaking faith for fact in making the most important decisions about the world we live in. ungekürzt. 'without question the most entertaining historical football book ever written' - The Guardian'In Hesse's capable hands, the history of German football seems more entertaining, unpredictable and scandal-infested than England's' - FourFourTwo'Beautifully crafted, demolishes myths with the cold-blooded efficiency of a literary Gerd Müller' - The TimesGermany did not have professional players or a national league until the 1960s, yet it became one of the most successful football nations in the world.Tor! (Goal!) traces the extraordinary story of Germany's club and international football, from the days when it was regarded as a dangerously foreign pastime, through the horrors of the Nazi years, to the postwar triumphs, the World Cup victories, and all the way up to the present day.Tor! challenges the myth that German football is 'predictable' or 'efficient' and brings to life the fascinating array of characters who shaped it: the betrayed pioneer Walther Bensemann; the enigmatic genius Sepp Herberger; the all-conquering Franz Beckenbauer; the misfit Lothar Matthäus; the coaches reshaping the modern game; and even the radio commentator Herbert Zimmermann, whose ecstatic cries of 'Tor!' greeted the winning goal in the 1954 World Cup final and helped change a whole nation's view of itself.Fully revised and updated, Tor! is the definitive history of German football.

Since it was first published in 1973, A Random Walk Down Wall Street has been a highly influential best seller. Burton G. Malkiel demolishes the idea that investment "experts" can predict stock price changes and thereby "beat the market." With all available information that could affect the value of a company's shares known almost instantly to all investors, Malkiel says, shares quickly find the price that reflects that information. This is known as the efficient market hypothesis. So what should investors do? Because on average, stock market prices have always risen in the long term, Malkiel recommends buying a broad range of stocks to reflect the market price level as a whole - investing in an index fund, which does just that - and holding on to them. Two main challenges have been leveled against Malkiel's ideas. First, a few famous investors (like Warren Buffet) seem to do better than the market over the long term, against Malkiel's predictions. Second, the 2007-9 financial crisis was caused by securities based on the subprime housing market that were wildly overpriced - which again seems to contradict Malkiel's theory. His answer? The theory was still right in the long term. Prices of those securities did collapse. It just took a few years. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. With this book - his most ambitious yet - Ken McGoogan delivers a vivid, comprehensive recasting of Arctic-exploration history. Dead Reckoning challenges the conventional narrative, which emerged out of Victorian England and focused almost exclusively on Royal Navy officers. By integrating non-British and fur-trade explorers and, above all, Canada's indigenous peoples, this work brings the story of Arctic discovery into the 21st century. Orthodox history celebrates such naval figures as John Franklin, Edward Parry and James Clark Ross. Dead Reckoning tells their stories, but the book also encompasses such forgotten heroes as Thanadelthur, Akaitcho, Tattanoeuck, Ouligbuck, Tookoolito and Ebierbing, to name just a few. Without the assistance of the Inuit, Franklin's recently discovered ships, Erebus and Terror, would still be lying undiscovered at the bottom of the polar sea.The book ranges from the 16th century to the present day, looks at climate change and the politics of the Northwest Passage, and recognizes the cultural diversity of a centuries-old quest. Informed by the author's own voyages and researches in the Arctic, Dead Reckoning is a colourful, multi-dimensional saga that demolishes myths, exposes pretenders and celebrates unsung heroes. For international listeners, it sets out a new story of Arctic discovery. For Canadians, it brings that story home. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Godfrey.
