It’s 1968, and Sheldon and Meg Crane have just moved their family from Pennsylvania to the small town of Black Mountain, NC. Sheldon, recently ousted from the ministry due to an illicit affair, takes a job as a used-car salesman at his brother-in-law's auto dealership. Burdened by his wife’s unforgiveness and his daughter’s resentment over the move to “Barney Fife country”, Sheldon finds a measure of solace in his eight-year-old son’s ability to cope. After settling into an old house high on the side of a mountain, the family discovers their new home is no ordinary place. Family members occasionally see and speak with the home’s previous residents - and the ones who will live there in the future. While attempting to come to terms with this portal to the past and future, their son, Digger, suddenly disappears. Was he kidnapped, or did Digger wander off into the mountains and become lost? The answer lies in a place once beyond a time - in a realm where the mysterious power of forgiveness removes sorrow and heals even the most egregious sins. ungekürzt. Language: English. Elijah: The Miel Chronicles: A Reign of Blood Series Companion , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 56min
These are the journeys of Miel, the keeper of the journal. The workings of heaven are shrouded in mystery and myth, leaving us to only theorize as to what awaits us when we pass. There are those among us, however, that are special cases. These are good people who have committed a horrendous crime, such as murder. What makes their cases special, however, is the fact that by committing these egregious acts, one could argue that they have made the world a better place. A heavenly court of archangels is forced to consider these special cases, holding in their collective hands the fate of the souls that come before them, but only one among them, Rashnu, recognizes that these souls cannot be judged on just the outward details. Miel, the lowly angel assisting him is tasked with traveling the world to gather the real facts, facts that will hopefully lead to their salvation. The Miel Chronicles is a collaborative effort created by J.T. Lewis to work with other authors on a special project. Elijah, co-authored with Alexia Purdy, is the second of these stories and can be heard on its own. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Anne Marie Susan Silvey. They Killed Our President: 63 Facts That Prove a Conspiracy to Kill JFK , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 679min
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 50 years, you're aware of the many hypotheses that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was not done by one man. Whether you've listened to one or a dozen of the audiobooks on this topic, there's no way to fully grasp the depth of this conspiracy. For the first time ever, New York Times best-selling authors Jesse Ventura and Dick Russell have teamed up with some of the most respected and influential assassination researchers to put together the ultimate compendium that covers every angle - from the plot to the murder - of JFK. They Killed Our President will not only discuss the most famous of theories, but will also bring to light new and recently discovered information, which together shows that the United States government not only was behind this egregious plot, but took every step to make sure that the truth would not come out. With 2013 marking the fiftieth anniversary of JFK's assassination, this is the perfect time for They Killed Our President to be available to listeners. The research and information in this audiobook are unprecedented, and there's nobody better to bring this to everyone's attention than the former governor of Minnesota and US Navy SEAL, Jesse Ventura. ungekürzt. Winners Take All
The New York Times bestselling, groundbreaking investigation of how the global elite's efforts to "change the world" preserve the status quo and obscure their role in causing the problems they later seek to solve. An essential read for understanding some of the egregious abuses of power that dominate today's news. Anand Giridharadas takes us into the inner sanctums of a new gilded age, where the rich and powerful fight for equality and justice any way they can-except ways that threaten the social order and their position atop it. They rebrand themselves as saviors of the poor; they lavishly reward "thought leaders" who redefine "change" in ways that preserve the status quo; and they constantly seek to do more good, but never less harm. Giridharadas asks hard questions: Why, for example, should our gravest problems be solved by the unelected upper crust instead of the public institutions it erodes by lobbying and dodging taxes? His groundbreaking investigation has already forced a great, sorely needed reckoning among the world's wealthiest and those they hover above, and it points toward an answer: Rather than rely on scraps from the winners, we must take on the grueling democratic work of building more robust, egalitarian institutions and truly changing the world-a call to action for elites and everyday citizens alike.- Shop: buecher

Rethinking Aging: Growing Old and Living Well in a Over-Treated Society , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 579min
For those fortunate enough to reside in the developed world, death before reaching a ripe old age is a tragedy, not a fact of life. Although aging and dying are not diseases, older Americans are subject to the most egregious marketing in the name of "successful aging" and "long life," as if both are commodities. In Rethinking Aging, Nortin M. Hadler examines health-care choices offered to aging Americans and argues that too often the choices serve to profit the provider rather than benefit the recipient, leading to the medicalization of everyday ailments and blatant overtreatment. Rethinking Aging forewarns and arms listeners with evidence-based insights that facilitate health-promoting decision making. Over the past decade, Hadler has established himself as a leading voice among those who approach the menu of health-care choices with informed skepticism. Only the rigorous demonstration of efficacy is adequate reassurance of a treatment's value, he argues; if it cannot be shown that a particular treatment will benefit the patient, one should proceed with caution. In Rethinking Aging, Hadler offers a doctor's perspective on the medical literature as well as his long clinical experience to help listeners assess their health-care options and make informed medical choices in the last decades of life. The challenges of aging and dying, he eloquently assures us, can be faced with sophistication, confidence, and grace. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Elana Perl. Abusive Relationship: Gaslighting Signs You Are in an Abusive Relationship , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 101min
As defined in psychoanalysis & psychotherapy, gaslighting is the act of trying "to cause another individual to doubt his/her own judgments and perceptions". The name is inspired by a famous Ingrid Bergman movie in which she is slowly driven insane by her husband. A common method of gaslighting is known as the "double-whammy", in which the gaslighter puts down the victim, waits for the victim's response, and then attacks the victim's judgment, perspective or questioning of the original attack. The term "gaslighting" comes from the 1938 British play Gas Light wherein a husband attempts to drive his wife crazy using a variety of tricks causing her to question her own perceptions and sanity. Gas Light was made into a move both in 1940 and 1944. It's a powerful way for manipulators to maintain control over others, especially if the person subjected to this treatment has less-than-robust self-esteem. In many cases, the gaslighter does this to help himself feel better by making someone else feel worse. Gaslighting is hard to admit. At the extremes, these behaviors qualify as emotional abuse. But even less egregious versions of gaslighting are insensitive, boorish or just plain sexist. The irony is that many people engaging in these behaviors especially milder forms may not even realize it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Neil Reeves. Grant Moves South , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1078min
A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian's acclaimed Civil War history of the complex man and controversial Union commander whose battlefield brilliance ensured the downfall of the Confederacy. Preeminent Civil War historian Bruce Catton narrows his focus on commander Ulysses S. Grant, whose bold tactics and relentless dedication to the Union ultimately ensured a Northern victory in the nation's bloodiest conflict. While a succession of Union generals - from McClellan to Burnside to Hooker to Meade - were losing battles and sacrificing troops due to ego, egregious errors, and incompetence, an unassuming Federal Army commander was excelling in the Western theater of operations. Though unskilled in military power politics and disregarded by his peers, Colonel Grant, commander of the Twenty-First Illinois Volunteer Infantry, was proving to be an unstoppable force. He won victory after victory at Belmont, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson, while brilliantly avoiding near-catastrophe and ultimately triumphing at Shiloh. And Grant's bold maneuvers at Vicksburg would cost the Confederacy its invaluable lifeline: the Mississippi River. But destiny and President Lincoln had even loftier plans for Grant, placing nothing less than the future of an entire nation in the capable hands of the North's most valuable military leader. Based in large part on military communiqués, personal eyewitness accounts, and Grant's own writings, Catton's extraordinary history offers listeners an insightful look at arguably the most innovative Civil War battlefield strategist, unmatched by even the South's legendary Robert E. Lee. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bronson Pinchot. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/026013/bk_adbl_026013_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

Once a Crooked Man , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 715min
A deliciously quirky crime novel from David McCallum, the beloved actor known for his portrayal of Illya Kuryakin on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS. Crime pays. And pays well. Sal, Max, and Enzo Bruschetti have proven this over a lifetime of nefarious activity that they have kept hidden from law enforcement. Nowhere in any file on any computer is there a record of anything illegal from which they have profited. But Max has a problem. His body is getting old, and his doctor has told him to take it easy. Max has decided that the time has come for the family to retire. But when young actor Harry Murphy overhears the Bruschetti brothers planning changes to their organization, including the murder of a man in London who knows too much, the Bruschettis' plans begin to unravel. After Harry makes the well-intentioned if egregious mistake of trying to warn the Bruchettis' intended victim, he finds himself alone in a foreign country, on the wrong side of the law, with a suitcase full of cash and a dangerous man on his trail. And while his good looks, charm, and cheerful persistence may prove assets in the turbulent events that follow, none of Harry's past roles has prepared him for what happens next. By turns tense and funny, Once a Crooked Man is infused with the infectious charm that has made David McCallum one of television's longest-running, most-beloved stars. ungekürzt. Language: English.
