Stephen Luckwell is an autistic teenager with an enquiring mind. His teacher, Claire, helps him through the daily activities which present him with enormous challenges, from deciphering phrases such as "I was miles away" or "I wouldn't want to be in your shoes", to understanding private jokes and other people's expressions. It's the day of the regional heats of the Young Artists' competition and Stephen is preparing how to behave. If he's properly prepared, he can behave appropriately. Meanwhile Claire has some huge life changes in store, but she's not quite so prepared as Stephen. Written by Nick Wood and starring James Rastall, Emily Chennery and Simon Lee Phillips. Adopting a critical realist approach to morality, this book considers morality as an aspect of social reality, enquiring into the nature of moral agency and asking whether we can legitimately argue for a specific moral position and whether moral positions can be understood to apply universally. Drawing on the thought of Bhaskar, Collier and Sayer, it explores a series of ontological questions about morality, shedding light on the ways in which critical realism can be used to address them, ultimately responding to the question of whether critical realism and the moral theories that have been produced through its use can provide an explanation of morality as a feature of reality. Through a synthesis of realist thought, the author develops a comprehensive theoretical understanding of morality that can be tested for its explanatory power through subsequent practical research. As such, it will appeal to scholars of philosophy and social science with interests in critical realism, ontology and meta-ethics.

Silence, Chris discovered, is easy. If nobody asks, you never have to tell. Christopher Bright is a well-respected conservation architect, a good neighbour and friend. He has a devoted wife, two talented children and an old Rover. He plays tennis on Saturdays and enjoys a beer with his business partner after work. Life is orderly, yet an unresolved question has haunted him for as long as he can remember: who was his birth father? Devotion to his adoptive parents has always prevented Chris from enquiring too deeply, but when his mother dies, information emerges that becomes the catalyst for changes he has never imagined. As light is cast on his father, attention turns to his birth mother, but when he goes in search of the person behind the photo, he encounters a conspiracy of silence. His quest for information, however, not only reveals the truth about his mother's life but exposes the fault lines in his own, and Chris finds the price of knowledge increasingly heavy. Nevertheless, the truth must be told.... Or must it? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Little. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/025537/bk_adbl_025537_sample.mp3. It is somewhere close to midnight on the clock when the men who fought the Second World War will still be with us. I have met just a few of them, sometimes goading them to reveal their experiences, at other times being simply a conduit to the river of their memories, sensing, on occasion, a kind of urgency to get it out there, just so these adventures and tragedies will not be lost to future enquiring minds. Michael Veitch has always been a keen historian and aeroplane fanatic. From a young age, he was obsessed with air force pilots and their machines. And with his gift for chat, he has once again captured the memories of these brave, lucky men who survived the 'unsurvivable'. The risks of not returning from flying missions in WWII were extremely high, so the stories are uniquely heroic, almost unbelievable. But these were ordinary men in extraordinary situations, and, in this third collection from Michael Veitch, they record their stories for future generations. ungekürzt. Language: English.
