A World to Live In: An Ecologist's Vision for a Plundered Planet , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 527min
A century of industrial development is the briefest of moments in the half billion years of the Earth's evolution. And yet our current era has brought greater changes to the Earth than any period in human history. The biosphere, the globe's life-giving envelope of air and climate, has been changed irreparably. In A World to Live In, the distinguished ecologist George Woodwell shows that the biosphere is now a global human protectorate and that its integrity of structure and function are tied closely to the human future. The earth is a living system, Woodwell explains, and its stability is threatened by human disruption. The assumption that we can continue to use fossil fuels and "adapt" to climate disruption, Woodwell argues, is a ticket to catastrophe. But Woodwell points the way toward a solution. We must respect the full range of life on Earth - not species alone, but their natural communities of plant and animal life that have built, and still maintain, the biosphere. We must recognize that the Earth's living systems are our heritage and that the preservation of the integrity of a finite biosphere is a necessity and an inviolable human right. ungekürzt. Fresh Air, Raphael Lewis and David Moats, Hörbuch, Digital, 50min
Journalist Raphael Lewis and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Moats on this edition of Fresh Air. Lewis is the Boston Globe's State House reporter. He'll discuss the ruling by the Massachusetts high court yesterday that gay couples in Massachusetts will be accorded full equal marriage rights rather than civil unions. The ruling is a clarification of the court's November decision that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. The State Senate asked for clarification on the decision because they felt it was worded vaguely. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Moats is the Editorial Page Editor of the Rutland Herald in Vermont, where he won that paper's first Pulitzer for his series of editorials in support of same-sex unions. He's the author of the new book Civil Wars: A Battle for Gay Marriage. Vermont became the first state in the country to make civil unions legal for gay and lesbian couples. In 1999 the State Supreme Court ruled that gay couples were due the legal rights of marriage, and told the State Legislature to decide how best to do that. The Legislature then came up with the concept of "civil union" providing gay partners inheritance and hospital-visitation rights, but stopped short of recognizing the partnerships as equivalents of marriage. We Don't Live Here Anymore: The Collected Short Stories and Novellas of Andre Dubus, Volume 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 998min
In the early 1970s, literary journals that contained Andre Dubus' short stories were passed around among admiring readers. When his debut collection, Separate Flights, arrived in 1975, it was immediately celebrated and won the Boston Globe's Laurence L. & Thomas Winship/PEN New England Award. The collection includes the novella We Don't Live Here Anymore, which served as the basis for the 2004 film of the same title (nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival); the novella also introduces Dubus' writer-protagonist Hank Allison, a character who continues to appear throughout his work. Two years later, the title story of Dubus' sophomore collection Adultery and Other Choices continued the exploits of Hank Allison. "The title story alone will make it worth your while to go out and get the book", wrote the New York Times Book Review. While the collection's opening stories focus on the fragile nature of youth, later stories shift to darker struggles of adulthood, such as in "Andromache" - Dubus' first story to appear in The New Yorker (1968) - which traces the aftermath of a tragic death during wartime. The complete list of narrators includes Robert Fass, Joe Barrett, Bronson Pinchot, Cassandra Campbell, Hillary Huber, Traber Burns, and Andre Dubus. ungekürzt. Wormwood: The Days of Elijah, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 402min
Everett and Courtney Carroll have survived the Seven Seal Judgments which devastated the planet through a global earthquake and a massive bombardment of meteors. The cities of the earth lie in ruin, and much of the globe's forests have been destroyed by widespread forest fires. But have their efforts to stay alive been in vain? The next series of judgements to fall upon the earth are known as the Seven Trumpets. Within this series of cataclysms is the earth's collision with a giant asteroid, known as Wormwood. The comet will poison much of the planet's fresh water supplies, making survival near impossible. Undeterred by the global chaos, the supreme leader of the Global Republic, Angelo Luz, pushes forward with his plans to eradicate his empire of dissenters. In the midst of the mayhem, he sends forth his armies to wipe out the remnant of true Christians as well as the growing number of Messianic Jews. With each subsequent Trumpet Judgement and every passing day, Everett and Courtney's odds of living grow slimmer. If they are to survive, they'll need perseverance, faith, and a great outpouring of providence from The Almighty. As with all books by Mark Goodwin, this book contains no profanity and no embarrassing sex scenes. However, if you're offended by conservative principles and references to scripture, this book might not be for you. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Pierce. Bringing the Sun Down to Earth
In 1998, my colleague, Forrest Mims, and I began a project to develop inexpensive handheld atmosphere monitoring instruments for the GLOBE Program, an international environmental science and education program that began its operations on Earth Day, 1995. GLOBE's goal was to involve students, teachers, and scientists around the world in authentic partn- ships in which scientists would develop instrumentation and experimental protocols suitable for student use. In return, data collected by students and their teachers would be used by scientists in their research. This kind of collaboration represented a grand vision for science education which had never before been attempted on such a scale, and we embraced this vision with great enthusiasm. Between 1998 and 2006, Forrest Mims and I collaborated on the development of several instruments based on Mims' original concept of using light emitting diodes as spectrally selective detectors of sunlight, which was first published in the peer-reviewed literature in 1992. These instruments have evolved into a set of tools and procedures for monitoring the transmission of sunlight through the atmosphere, and they can be used to learn a great deal about the composition of the atmosphere and the dynamics of the Earth/atmosphere/sun system. If measurements with these instruments are made properly, they have significant scientific value, as well.- Shop: buecher

Rome Travel Guide , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 42min
Rome is the capital and largest city of Italy and of the Lazio region. It's the famed city of the Roman Empire, the Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita (sweet life), the Vatican City, and Three Coins in the Fountain. Rome, as a millennium-long center of power, culture and religion, having been the center of one of the globe's greatest civilizations ever, has exerted a huge influence over the world in its 2,500 years of existence. The Historic Center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With wonderful palaces, millennium-old churches and basilicas, grand romantic ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues, and graceful fountains, Rome has an immensely rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of Europe's and the world's most visited, famous, influential, and beautiful capitals. Today, Rome has a growing nightlife scene and is also seen as a shopping heaven, being regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world (some of Italy's oldest jewelry and clothing establishments were founded in the city). With so many sights and things to do, Rome can truly be classified a "global city". Rome has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In the winter months, daytime temperatures are usually pleasant and range from 10-15 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures tend to stay slightly above freezing. That being said, the occasional cold snap can cause temperatures to fall below freezing, and it is not unheard of for light flurries of snow to fall on occasion, though accumulation is rare, and major snowstorms are known to occur only once every 20-25 years. ungekürzt. Soldier On: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Volume 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 508min
For Cade Grayson, father, husband, and former Delta Force operator, life has changed drastically over the course of 48 hours. He's watched the dead inexplicably return to life before his very eyes. He's lost many people near and dear to him, most dying unfathomably horrible deaths at the hands of the dead who have seemingly overnight taken over the big metropolis - their numbers and hunger for human flesh growing exponentially with each passing hour. After having been forced to kill his reanimated neighbors in self-defense and then surviving the perilous overland journey from his home in Portland, Oregon, Cade finds temporary refuge inside the wire of a Special Forces garrison on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah. But his stay is short and he decides to strike out alone, resuming the search for his missing wife, Brook, and 11-year-old daughter, Raven, the only way he knows how - with a laser-like focus and full speed ahead. So in the early morning hours on day four of what might be the United States and perhaps the entire globe's extinction-level event, he slips out Camp Williams' back gate riding a specially modified off-road motorcycle. Armed and resupplied and with only a satellite phone connecting him to the crumbling world, Cade soldiers on eastbound - locked and loaded - with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, his small family's last known whereabouts, dead set in his sights. Meanwhile, 400 miles away in Colorado Springs, Colorado - the new capital of the United States, President-by-succession Valerie Clay works round the clock with what's left of the military to gather together the resources and scientific know-how necessary to stop the Omega Virus' rapid spread and, starting with Colorado Springs, rid the country of the multitudes of walking dead. Will the 1900 miles and the millions of dead in Cade's path succeed in keeping him separated from his family? Will mankind find a foothold against the dead ungekürzt. Language: English. No Room for Small Dreams: Courage, Imagination, and the Making of Modern Israel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 443min
In 1934, 11-year-old Shimon Peres emigrated to the land of Israel from his native Poland, leaving behind an extended family who would later be murdered in the Holocaust. Few back then would have predicted that this young man would eventually become one of the towering figures of the 20th century. Peres would indeed go on to serve the new nation as prime minister, president, foreign minister, and the head of several other ministries. He was central to the establishment of the Israeli Defense Forces and the defense industry that would provide the young nation with a robust deterrent power. He was crucial to launching Israel's nuclear energy program and to the creation of its high-tech "Start Up Nation" revolution. His refusal to surrender to conventional wisdom and political conventions helped save the Israeli economy and prompted some of the most daring military operations in history, among them the legendary Operation Entebbe. And yet, as important as his role in creating and deploying Israel's armed forces was, his stunning transition from hawk to dove - with its accompanying unwavering commitment to peace - made him one of the globe's most recognized, honored, and admired statesmen. In this, his final work, finished only weeks before his passing, Peres offers a long-awaited examination of the crucial turning points in Israeli history through the prism of having been a decision maker and eyewitness. Told with the frankness of someone aware this would likely be his final statement, No Room for Small Dreams spans decades and events, but as much as it is about what happened, it is about why it happened. Examining pivotal moments in Israel's rise, Peres explores what makes for a great leader, how to make hard choices in a climate of uncertainty and distress, the challenges of balancing principles with policies, and the liberating nature of imagination and unpredicted innovation. In doing so, he not only charts a better path forward fo ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Bramhall. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/harp/006224/bk_harp_006224_sample.mp3. Phenomenal: A Hesitant Adventurer's Search for Wonder in the Natural World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 640min
One woman reclaims her sense of wonder by seeking out the globe's most incredible natural phenomena Heartfelt and awe inspiring, Leigh Ann Henion's Phenomenal is a moving tale of physical grandeur and emotional transformation, a journey around the world that ultimately explores the depths of the human heart. A journalist and young mother, Henion combines her own conflicted but joyful experiences as a parent with a panoramic tour of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders. Phenomenal begins in hardship: with Henion deeply shaken by the birth of her beloved son, shocked at the adversity a young mother faces with a newborn. The lack of sleep, the shrinking social circle, the health difficulties, all collide and force Henion to ask hard questions about our accepted wisdom on parenting and the lives of women. Convinced that the greatest key to happiness - both her own and that of her family - lies in periodically allowing herself to venture into the wider world beyond home, Henion sets out on a global trek to rekindle her sense of wonder. Henion's quest takes her far afield, but it swiftly teaches her that freedom is its own form of parenting, one that ultimately allows her to meet her son on his own terms: with a visceral understanding of the wonder he experiences every day at the fresh new world. Whether standing on the still-burning volcanoes of Hawaii or in the fearsome lightning storms of Venezuela, in the vast animal movements of Tanzania or the elegant butterfly migrations of Mexico, Henion reveals in Phenomenal a world of sublimity and revelation. Henion's spiritual wanderlust puts her in the path of modern-day shamans, reindeer herders, and astrophysicists. She meets laypeople from all over the world, from all walks of life, each going to great lengths to chase migrations, auroras, eclipses, and other phenomena. ungekürzt. Language: English.
