The Wind in the Willows" is a classic of children's literature by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a pastoral version of England. The Reluctant Dragon , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 54min
Kenneth Grahame's classic tale of a young boy who discovers an erudite, mushroom-loving dragon living in the Downs above his home. The two become friends, but soon afterwards the dragon is discovered by the townsfolk, who send for St George to rid them of it. St George, by this time, is quite elderly and has little interest in slaying dragons, though he resolves to do it as it is his duty. The boy introduces St George to the dragon, and the two decide that it would be better for them not to fight. Eventually, they decide to stage a fake joust between the two combatants. The dragon appears to have died, and the townsfolk rejoice (though not all of them, as some had placed bets on the dragon winning). St George then reveals that the dragon had not died, and assures the townsfolk that he is not dangerous. The dragon is then accepted by the people. Read by Boris Karloff. ungekürzt. Originally written as a series of bedtime stories for the author's son, the story begins at the arrival of spring where we find the good-natured Mole tired of doing his spring cleaning. Mole decides to abandon his cleaning in order to enjoy the fresh air of spring. He journeys to the river where he meets Rat, whom he quickly befriends. Together the two row down the river ultimately meeting up with Toad at Toad Hall. There they discover Toad's current obsession with his horse-drawn caravan, one which he quickly abandons for a motorcar when his caravan is run off the road by one. In the Wake of the Willows, 2nd Edition: A Sequel to Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 301min
A New World version of a classic story set in a New England coastal estuary in the 1920s.This is a story about the denizens of a very special river. For like their relatives on the other side of the ocean, this river had its own rat, mole, badger, otter, and weasel clans. When a spooky nocturnal creature starts terrorizing the riverfront, Mr. Rat’s clever daughter sets to work solving the mystery and unmasking the culprit. But that is only the beginning of the intrigue and adventure that happened one eventful summer. This lyrically crafted book features a mysterious Native American prophecy, a suspected sea monster, a scavenger hunt with a surprising twist, persnickety weasels, a mysterious clue etched on a piece of birch bark, some hilarious high jinks by Mr. Toad’s son, a chatterbox bobolink, a devastating hurricane, a heroic rescue, a liberal sprinkling of gentle humor, nautical adventures in wooden boats, some historical fiction, an unusual square dance with fireflies, a campfire on the beach at night watching shooting stars, and an outrageously conceited poem by Mr. Toad. This story is set almost a century ago against the rural backdrop of coastal New England. All the natural history and science in this book is accurate and will inspire listeners to learn more. Most of the locations, boat names, and historical events are accurate for the times. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Madeleine Barker. To the Best of Our Knowledge: Fairy Tales, Hörbuch, Digital, 52min
In this hour, Annie Gauger has edited a brand new annotated version of the classic novel "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Graham. She tells Steve Paulson that the characters reflect various aspects of Grahame's personality and that the book began as a series of tales exchanged between Grahame and his son. And we hear some of Alan Bennett's adaptation of the story for the BBC. Next, Nina Paley has made a film using animation, Indonesian shadow puppets, and a '20s-era jazz singer to retell the story from the Ramayana of the marriage of the Hindu god Rama and his wife, Sita. The film is called Sita Sings the Blues. Paley tells Jim Fleming what inspired her. Then, Musharraf Ali Farooqi is the translator of The Adventures of Amir Hamza and Hoshruba. He tells Anne Strainchamps about these ancient Indian tales of sorcerers and wizards, originally written in Urdu. After that, Maria Tatar is the author of Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood. She talks with Steve Paulson about what makes fairy tales so compelling to children. And we hear a bit of Christopher Walken's version of Goodnight Moon from The Simpsons. Finally, Kurt Schwitters - he was a celebrated modern artist in Europe in the 20s and 30s who both painted and wrote satirical, surrealist fantasies. His career was cut short by the Nazis. Now, a collection of his tales, called Lucky Hans has been translated and edited by Jack Zipes. Zipes, an expert on fairy tales, tells Anne Strainchamps about Schwitters' life and work.
