Little Known Tales in Sacramento History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 164min
John Sutter, who left Switzerland to escape debtor's prison, came to California and built a giant land monopoly. Again, he became heavily in debt and died destitute. The entire Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys were inundated for 300 miles long and 20 miles wide by the flood of 1862. The cholera epidemic killed more than 1000 citizens, including doctors and others who were caring for the patients. The Old City Cemetery is an exciting place. As docents are quick to remind, "People are dying to get in here." The docents know their job. It's almost as though they are trying to bring the city's cemeteries back to life. We love the epitaph on one headstone that simply reads: "See ya later." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlie Glaize. Amityville’s Ghost: Warface: Featuring Links to My Past: A Short Story of Horror , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 59min
In the first of two short horror stories, “Warface”, urban legend has it that eons ago Samuel Ketchum killed and tortured countless Indians on remote Indian Island. Not even women and children were spared. Years later, tales of bizarre disappearance and drowning surfaced. Locals tell of a tribal witch doctor Ketchum burned alive on that very island and speculate he now roams the land seeking vengeance for his death by collecting innocent souls for eternity. He is Chief Warface, and he’s out there haunting Indian Island. In the story “Links to My Past”, while visiting a graveyard during a class trip to Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a group of students notice the name on a headstone is the same as one of the students. That student, Richard Valentine, starts having dreams and goes back to the time dated on the tombstone of 1887. This cemetery contains graves of the unwanted: murderers, rapists, and those possessed by witchcraft. What Valentine sees changes him forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Barry Schwam. Edward Lear: Stories & Rhymes, Hörbuch, Digital, 70min
Ah, Nonsense! The English, it is often said, have a peculiar brand of humour. Along with copious cups of tea and a stiff upper lip it keeps life together in moments of difficulty and strife. One of our most-loved humourists is Edward Lear, famed throughout the world for his nonsense verse and limericks. Born in Holloway, North London, Lear was the 21st child of Ann and Jeremiah Lear, and raised by his sister, Ann, who was, of course, 21 years older than Edward. His early life was unsettled, prone to illness, especially epileptic fits which gave him a character coloured with guilt and shame. However by his 30s he had published his first book of limericks in which his touching drawings were also displayed. His early works as an artist are easily recognised, but his later works such as "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Jumblies" have established him first and foremost as a writer of humourous verse. Lear travelled widely during his years and eventually settled in San Remo, in Italy, eventually succumbing to death in 1876. On his headstone are inscribed these lines from Tennyson's "To E.L. [Edward Lear], On His Travels in Greece": ...all things fair. With such a pencil, such a pen. You shadow forth to distant men, I read and felt that I was there." Language: English.
