Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying: An Exploration of Consciousness with the Dalai Lama , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 450min
This is an absorbing account of a dialogue between leading Western scientists and the foremost representative of Buddhism today, the Dalai Lama of Tibet. For modern science, the transitional states of consciousness lie at the forefront of research in many fields. For a Buddhist practitioner, these same states present crucial opportunities to explore and transform consciousness itself. This book is the account of a historic dialogue between leading Western scientists and the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Revolving around three key moments of consciousness - sleep, dreams, and death - the conversations recorded here are both engrossing and highly listenable. Whether the topic is lucid dreaming, near-death experiences, or the very structure of consciousness itself, the listener is continually surprised and delighted. Narrated by Fajer Al-Kaisi, the book begins with insightful remarks on the notion of personal identity by noted philosopher Charles Taylor, author of the acclaimed Sources of Self. This sets the stage for Dr. Jerome Engel, Dr. Joyce MacDougal, and others to engage in extraordinary exchanges with the Dalai Lama on topics ranging from the neurology of sleep to the yoga of dreams. Remarkable convergences between the Western scientific tradition and the Buddhist contemplative sciences are revealed. Dr. Jayne Gackenbach's discussion of lucid dreaming, for example, prompts a detailed and fascinating response from the Dalai Lama on the manipulation of dreams by Buddhist meditators. The conversations also reveal provocative divergences of opinion, as when the Dalai Lama expresses skepticism about near-death experiences as presented by Joan Halifax. The conversations are engrossing and highly listenable. Any listener interested in psychology, neuroscience, Buddhism, or the alternative worlds of dreams will surely enjoy Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying. ungekürzt. Language: English. Koban Universe 3: Galactic Police Force , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 815min
In the 300 years after defeating the Thandol Empire, Mirikami formed the Galactic Police Force. It isn’t a cop-on-the-corner force. The GPF is paramilitary with naval assets, patrolling the Federation and the former Empire. The GPF guards against threats by the old Empire’s most aggressive species. A murderous Finth pack is secretly mining rare earth minerals on a clueless new Carbola colony, selling via intermediaries to the Planetary Union. The minerals maintain Kobani superconducting physiology for the transformed PU citizens. Controlling the supply, the Finth intend to provoke a war between the PU and their Federation competitor. Both need rare elements for their populations. A Federation distracted by war would allow the Finth to carve a new empire from the old fragments. To keep mineral thefts secret, Carbola miners die nightly in the jaws and claws of Finth Hunter-Killer packs, simulating wild animal attacks out of the unexplored wilderness. When unexpected help arrives, it looks more terrifying than the problem. A Thandol emperor of one their factions enslaved a nearby species. Stewart Macdougal, a retired Federation president, vanished on a mission to investigate the reports. The Olt’kitapi reveal that he’s missing to Mirikami and innocently describe how they know precisely where he is. The embedded Kobani Comtap communicators, based on an Olt’kitapi design, has a hitherto unknown tracking capability. Stewart’s life is in imminent danger, forcing Mirikami and Maggi to immediately rush to the rescue. Things don’t go as planned, but the fireworks are impressive. Challenges continue for the GPF. The Thack Delos reveal new technology after they draw Mirikami and Ambassador Fisher into a trap. Tired of paying reparations for nuclear weapons used in the last war, the Thack Delos can void the contract only if the negotiators are dead. A Kobani lives too damned long, but there’s a simple cure! A peaceful visit by a GPF contact team to ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Eric Michael Summerer. Ronald Rabbit Is a Dirty Old Man , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 239min
This is either the funniest dirty book or the dirtiest funny book ever written! (Isaac Asimov)Somewhere around 1969, I began to grow dissatisfied with the underlying principle of most novels - that a disembodied voice in the first or third person was telling us a story. I liked the idea of novels passing themselves off as documents and drew inspiration from Mark Harris's Wake Up, Stupid and Sue Kaufman's Diary of a Mad Housewife, the first, ostensibly a collection of letters, the second, duh, a diary. (One could, of course, go back further, to the very beginnings of the English novel in the works of Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson.) I also found myself interested in writing with greater candor about sexual topics. I had knocked out dozens of soft-core paperbacks, and wanted to try anew with greater freedom and more realism.I wrote three paperback original novels for Berkley under the pen name Jill Emerson, two of them in diary form, the third a presumed collaborative novel written in concert by the three viewpoint characters. These were fun to do and worked out well, and they led to Ronald Rabbit Is a Dirty Old Man. I riffed on the experience of my friend George Dickerson, who, like the novel's protagonist, had the magazine he was editing folded out from under him. George went on reporting to his empty office for several months, until they found him out when they noticed he'd stopped using his expense account. A man of many talents, George went on to serve as a reporter for Time Magazine for several years, then segued into a career as an actor; he had a principal role in Blue Velvet.) I spliced in an experience of my own, when I drank for hours at the Kettle of Fish on Macdougal Street, emerging only to be picked up by a carful of rich Catholic schoolgirls from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Noroton, Connecticut, who essentially kidnapped me and drove me back to school with them./p ungekürzt. Policeman's Creek
Sweet B'Jesus - sweet b'bio Sweet B'Jesus was formed in 2009, and is a humble, two-person operation that consists of Christian Goutsis and Kevin Dabbs. Being from Calgary and Edmonton respectively, the two band members met over ten years ago, while performing together in professional theatre. Christian Goutsis has been a part of the Alberta arts scene since 1985, when he began acting in theatre, doing some television, and singing and playing in garage bands. Since then, he has become a multiple award winning actor, singer, and composer, who has worked extensively throughout Canada, and internationally over the last 20 years. Kevin Dabbs began playing drums in punk bands in Winnipeg in the 80's, proud to have shared the bill with the likes of Bif Naked, Nomeansno, Furnaceface, and the Descendents. Kevin moved to Edmonton in the mid 90's, and has been a fixture in the Edmonton music and theatre scene for well over a decade, as an actor, singer, drummer, and playwright. Collectively, the band has over 40 years of experience in various forms of music and theatre. The two are proud to have worked with, and played with, many great musicians over the years like, Tim Williams, Mike Plume, Chris Wynters, Bob Foster, Jason Kody, Mark Sterling, Andrew Blizzard, Peter Moller, Harley Symington, Paul Shihadeh, Kenny Chalmers, Van Wilmott, Kathy Derkach, Lisa Macdougal, and Steve Hoy, and many others. Policeman's creek marks the self-produced debut album for Sweet B'Jesus. It is a 12 song CD full of fun, acoustic and eclectic songs, and was recorded over a period of 8 days in February of 2010, at The Drake Inn, in Canmore, Alberta. Playing several instruments each, the band's theatrical and musical influences have allowed them write in several musical styles, while the song-writing leans toward pop on one hand, and country on the other, Policeman's Creek remains a cohesive album of engaging songs, with catchy harmonies, where each song tells it's own story. The album also features great session players from across Alberta like, Derek Stremel, Andrew Blizzard, Christopher Hunt, and Mark Sterling. Sweet B'Jesus has been called "Alberta Ween," and "Ween Light," which is fitting considering that Ween is one of the band's influences, and Ween's Did You See Me?, is the only song on the album that is not a Sweet B'Jesus original. Sweet B'Jesus is receiving a lot of positive feedback about Policeman's Creek, and is working hard on their follow-up album, Ferruginous Hawks, that will feature 12 original songs by this exciting new band, to be released in 2012.- Shop: odax
