Cet ouvrage établit qu'en tant qu'allocutaire d'elle-même et des autres, la femme est un être de langage capable de juger de la vérité de ses paroles, de l'objectivité de ses actes et de l'humanité de ses désirs. Alors que les féministes se contentent trop souvent de justifier de leur capacité à penser à l'instar des hommes, l'auteure l'établit ici comme un fait anthropologique universel, et donc, transculturel. Elle contribue de façon imparable à l'anthropologie philosophique du langage qui a démontré que le vivant humain n'a pu se rendre la vie possible, qu'en s'inventant l'usage du dialogue.
