From New York Times bestselling and Newbery Honor-winning author Shannon Hale comes a zany picture book that pokes fun at overly gendered notions of "boy books" and "girl books" and celebrates the pleasure of a good book. Stanley's thrilled for bookmobile day-until the old man at the window refuses to lend him the story he wants, all because it features a girl. "Girl books" are only for girls, the book man insists, just like cat books are only for cats and robot books are only for robots. But after a ferocious dinosaur successfully demands a book about ponies, Stanley musters up the courage to ask for the tale he really wants-about a girl adventurer fighting pirates on the open seas-and inspires the people, cats, robots, and goats around him to read stories outside their experiences and enjoy the pleasure of a good book of their choosing. Story Locale: Present-day rural U.S.

Cady has always wanted to be a reporter, like her hero Nellie Bly, so after a fire burns down the orphanage she lives in, she's ready to leave small-town Ontario and make her mark as a newspaperwoman. A crumbling newspaper clipping leads her to Orrenstown, Indiana, where her investigation into a long-ago murder earns her a hard lesson in race relations. Smart and determined, and more than a little headstrong, Cady pokes a stick into a wasp's nest of lies, dirty politics, corrupt law enforcement, and racial tension, and ends up fearing for her life as she closes in on something she's never cared about before: the truth about her own origins. ungekürzt. Love mystery? Then you'll love this book. Hate mystery? Then YOU'LL love this book. Pronzini is a fount of information about the "best" (read: hilariously inept) in mystery fiction. He's read every book ever written in the genre, it seems, and shows genuine affection for the form. The fun he pokes at the authors and their works is gentle and doesn't distract at all from your wonderment at the fact that these books ever even existed. It might, however, make you want to seek them out and try for yourself. Or maybe it'll help prevent a misstep in purchasing a book you wouldn't end up enjoying. Either way, this book is worth a listen (or three). These mystery authors have gone unsung for too long. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Chet Williamson.
