Born to Steal: When the Mafia Hit Wall Street, Hörbuch, Digital, 346min
This is the astounding, true story of the rise and fall of a fast-talking stock hustler, as well as a shocking portrait of the insidious ways the Mob infiltrates and fleeces Wall Street. From outrageous scams to out-of-control strip-club parties, Born to Steal takes you inside the lives of brash young men who flaunt their ignorance of stocks, bonds, and PE ratios even as they become the perfect foot soldiers in a vast campaign to separate honest people from their money. Trading his jeans and T-shirt for a $90 suit, Louis Pasciuto arrived on Wall Street in 1992 to join a "chop house," a crooked brokerage firm set up by a charismatic Mob-connected overlord. Working out of seventeen brokerage firms, Louis sold often worthless or nonexistent stocks to gullible retirees right under the nose of financial regulators. Stuffing his money into a mayonnaise jar - because he didn't have a clue how to invest it - he was quickly making thousands of dollars a day, and ready to strike out on his own. But a shark wanted a piece of Louis's action. Enter Charlie Ricottone, a mobster straight out of The Sopranos, who pummeled people in public, painted his bald spot in private, and was just the advance guard of a money-hungry army of wiseguys. Suddenly Louis's lifestyle - the stripper girlfriend, his looming marriage to an entirely different woman, the Rolexes, Armanis, celebrity friends, orgies, and three-day cocaine binges - was about to go up in smoke. When the violence escalated and the FBI finally stepped in, Louis had to pull off the ultimate heist: join the Feds and steal back his life. Language: English. Narrator: Frank Whaley. Hope: An Anchor for the Soul: My True Story of Discovering That We Are Never Alone , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 309min
In a country where violent crime and AIDS are rampant, Ani Tims, as a woman and a mom, was afraid to even walk out her front door, constantly worried her daughters - one of whom was born prematurely and barely survived - would be raped.Ani looked down the barrel of a gun pointed at her, relocated halfway around the world to start over in a strange country, and survived a house fire and a saddle pulmonary embolism, to name a few. In this shocking and ultimately inspiring true story, she reveals that God has always been there and how his plans for us, though perhaps difficult to see in the moment, are always miraculous.Whether we're ready for them or not, life has no qualms about throwing curveballs our way. Sometimes they come in such quick succession, it's like being pummeled by waves: You're tossed around, hit again and again before you can find your footing before you can get up off your knees. The question is whether you are going to stay down - weighed down by fear, anxiety, uncertainty, hurt, abandonment, and rejection - or find the motivation and courage to face life's hardships head-on, to get up, start healing as you grow in your faith, and continue with life. The choice is yours. But as a Christian, because you know God is guiding and empowering you, it's an easy choice to make.Through everything, Ani learned that:God’s timing is perfectWe should never underestimate the power of prayerWe should live close to God and become still often to hear his voiceIt is true that we get stronger through trialsWe shouldn’t attach too much value to earthly belongingsSerious problems can be resolved if both parties are willing to compromiseUltimately, we are never alone ungekürzt. Hell to Pay: Operation Downfall and the Invasion of Japan, 1945-1947 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 963min
Hell to Pay is a comprehensive and compelling examination of the many complex issues that encompassed the strategic plans for the proposed American invasion of Japan. U.S. planning for the invasion and military occupation of Imperial Japan began in 1943, two years before the dropping of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In its final form, Operation Downfall called for a massive Allied invasion - on a scale dwarfing D-Day - to be carried out in two stages. In the first stage, Operation Olympic, the U.S. Sixth Army would lead the southernmost assault on the Home Island of Kyushu preceded by the dropping of as many as nine atom bombs behind the landing beaches and troop concentrations inland. Sixth Army would secure airfields and anchorages needed to launch the second stage, Operation Coronet, five hundred miles to the north in 1946. The decisive Coronet invasion of the industrial heartland of Japan through the Tokyo Plain would be led by the Eighth Army, as well as the First Army, which had previously pummeled its way across France and Germany to defeat the Nazis. These facts are well known and have been recounted - with varying degrees of accuracy - in a variety of books and articles. A common theme in these works is their reliance on a relatively few declassified high-level planning documents. In contrast, Hell to Pay examines the invasion of Japan in light of the large body of Japanese and American operational and tactical planning documents unearthed by the author in both familiar and obscure archives, as well as postwar interrogations and reports that senior Japanese commanders and their staffs were ordered to produce for General MacArthur's headquarters. Hell to Pay brings to light the political and military ramifications of the enormous casualties and loss of material projected by both sides in the climatic struggle to bring the Pacific War to a conclusion through a brutal series of battles on Japanese soil./ ungekürzt. The Katyn Forest Massacre: The History of the Notorious Slaughter of Polish Prisoners by the Soviets During World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 110min
During the late 1930s the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin and the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler reached a secret alliance, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. By the terms of this agreement, the two dictators divided up Eastern Europe between them, and for a time Stalin even sought Axis membership. Though the alliance forged between the fascist and communist states could not survive their diametrically opposed views, they cooperated long enough to conquer Poland together in 1939. Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940. The resistance put up by these countries is often portrayed as weak, and the narrative is that the British stood alone in 1940 against the Nazi onslaught, defending the British Isles during the Battle of Britain and preventing a potential German invasion. In particular, the campaign in Poland is remembered as one in which an antiquated Polish army was quickly pummeled by the world's most modern army. Polish lancers charging in a valiant yet idiotic attack against German tanks is the only image from the 1939 Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland remaining in the popular imagination today. Originating as a piece of Nazi propaganda, paradoxically adopted by the Poles as a patriotic myth, the fictional charge obscures the actual events of September 1939. Outnumbered, outgunned, and under-equipped, the Polish army nevertheless inflicted heavy losses on the invading Wehrmacht. In fact, only the unexpected advance of Soviet forces from the east put a quick end to the struggle and saw the Polish republic partitioned again after just 20 years of independence. Nonetheless, the campaign that started World War II was a bloody sign of things to come as the conflict engulfed the globe. While the Germans performed the lion's share of military action in defeating Poland – and reaped the choic ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. The Wreck of the Portland: A Doomed Ship, a Violent Storm, and New England's Worst Maritime Disaster , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 333min
The SS Portland was a solid and luxurious ship, and its loss in 1898 in a violent storm with some 200 people aboard was later remembered as “New England’s Titanic.” The Portland was one of New England's largest and most luxurious paddle steamers, and after nine years' solid performance, she had earned a reputation as a safe and dependable vessel. In November 1898, a perfect storm formed off the New England coast. Conditions would produce a blizzard with 100 miles per hour winds and 60-foot waves that pummeled the coast. At the time there was no radio communication between ships and shore, no sonar to navigate by, and no vastly sophisticated weather forecasting capacity. The luxurious SS Portland, a sidewheel steamer furnished with chandeliers, red velvet carpets, and fine china, was carrying more than 200 passengers from Boston to Portland, Maine, over Thanksgiving weekend when it ran headlong into a monstrous, violent gale off Cade Cod. It was never seen again. All passengers and crew were lost at sea. More than half the crew on board were African Americans from Portland. Their deaths decimated the Maine African-American community. Before the storm abated it became one of the worst ever recorded in New England waters. The storm, now known as “The Portland Gale”, killed 400 people along the coast and sent more than 200 ships to the bottom, including the doomed Portland. To this day it is not known exactly how many passengers were aboard or even who many of them were. The only passenger list was aboard the vessel. As a result of this tragedy, ships would thereafter leave a passenger manifest ashore. The disaster has been blamed on the hubris of the captain of the Portland, Hollis Blanchard, who decided to leave the safety of Boston Harbor despite knowing that a severe storm was hurtling up the coast. Blanchard, a long-time mariner, had been passed over for a promotion for a younger captai ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Bennett. Treacherous: Carter Kids Series, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 671min
Teagan:I wanted to go home. Moving to America wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the family next door, but because of my so-called guardian - and I used that term lightly - we were the latest family to take up residency in Thirteenth Street, and I was the sole target of the bitch over the fence. But, for me, life was a lot to get a lot worse. Noah Messina, Ellie's step-brother, had decided to join her torment-the-new-girl-until-she-cracks mission. There had been a fight in their driveway last weekend between Noah and some other tattooed douchebag that had progressed into our yard, resulting in the windshield of my car being smashed when Noah pummeled his opponent through it. Thinking back now I had to admit that I sort of overreacted when I stalked outside in nothing but a Coldplay T-shirt and a black thong and tossed an entire can of white gloss paint over the hood of Noah's black Lexus in retaliation. I guess it had felt damn good to fight back instead of letting them walk all over me....Destroying Noah's car with paint was like waving a red rag in front of a bull. He lost it. Right there in my driveway, with his T-shirt ripped from his body and blood dripping from his eyebrow, Noah Messina had thrown the biggest man-tantrum I'd ever seen before declaring war on me....Noah:I was going to lose my shit over the girl-next-door. God, three months of having her live next door to me and I still felt like slamming my head into the garden wall - now worse than ever since she had challenged me. The defiance in her eyes as she stared at me down before bending over the hood of my baby and emptying the can of paint was something that struck a chord inside of me. I'd never been so angry or turned on in my life. Pure rage had flooded my veins, driven on even further when Teagan taunted me with her potty mouth and yeah, I'd kind of lost it with her. Problem was I ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nelson Hobbs, Lulu Russell. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/tant/011873/bk_tant_011873_sample.mp3.
