Mit Kidmans Band The Val Dusty Experiment, Galaxie 500, Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans u.v.a.Litmus ist der Soundtrack seines Avantgarde-Surt-Films von 1996. Hier wurde zuerst die Musik geschrieben und aufgenommen, erst dann das Drehbuch aufgesetzt, um der Musik und der Stimmung zu entsprechen. Der Film hatte großen Einfluß auf das Board-Design und brachte die Frage: Ist Surfen Kunst oder Sport? Singer-Songwriter/Surf. Mit Kidmans Band The Val Dusty Experiment, Galaxie 500, Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans u.v.a. By 1996, surfing was on the upswing in popularity as professional surfers became marketable athletes. The three-fin, high performance, thruster shortboard was the tool of choice, lending to a fast-paced slashing style and ultimately a more aggressive surf and destroy movement in board culture. Litmus, Andrew Kidman's first avant-garde surf film, served as a soulful reaction to the pop-punk progression that dominated the mainstream. Prior to filming, Kidman's band, The Val Dusty Experiment, recorded a total of thirty-five songs in one day. The outcome of the one-and-done sessions was a lo-fi, rustic, experimental rock 'n' roll sound, adding a rough-around-the-edges ambiance to the surf scenes that span Ireland, Australia, California, and South Africa. Additional contributions from Galaxie 500, Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans diversify the score. Litmus was a defining moment in surf filmmaking -- it sparked an open-minded retro-progressive movement as surfers formed a higher consciousness about the types of boards they were riding and why. The Anthology Surf Archive reissues series proudly presents the soundtrack of Litmus, released in tandem with the soundtrack from Kidman's 2006 follow up, Glass Love, in new form. TRACKS: 1. Evolution
Auf der Suche nach einem Blue-Note-Album mit genauso viel Soul und Groove "wie früher"? Da muss man sich nicht bei den Reissues umschauen, denn sowas gibts beim legendären US-Label auch heute. Nach Wayne Shorter und Bobby Hutcherson ist jetzt nämlich eine weitere Jazzlegende zum Label zurückgekehrt, auf dem sie in den 60er Jahren ihre Karriere gestartet hat: Hammond-Organist Lonnie Smith, seit einiger Zeit mit Doktortitel, aber immer noch mit soul-jazzigen Grooves wie in seinen besten Jahren unterwegs. Bei der Acid-Jazz- und Mojo-Club-Generation ist er längst Legende, gesamplet wurde er von A Tribe Called Quest und anderen. Jetzt veröffentlicht der mittlerweile 73-Jährige nach geschlagenen 45 Jahren endlich wieder ein neues Album bei Blue Note. Begleitet wird er auf "Evolution" nicht nur von seinem Sextett (mit zwei Bläsern, einem Gitarristen und zwei Schlagzeugern!) sondern auch hochkarätigen Gästen wie Pianist Robert Glasper und Saxophonist Joe Lovano.
