A dangerous mission....Although Colin MacKay is thought a charmer, he hides an old wound behind his quick smile and dancing blue eyes. To ease the pain of a past betrayal, he has devoted his life to the cause for Scottish freedom. When King Robert the Bruce fears his strategic communications have been compromised, he sends Colin on a crucial mission: ferret out the spy and deliver an urgent missive to the King’s brother. When Colin discovers that the deceptively enchanting Sabine has been intercepting the King’s correspondence, he holds her captive until he can deliver his missive and hand her over to the King’s judgement. But detaining the sable-haired beauty proves far more dangerous when lust flares hot between them. A deadly game of seduction....Sabine has known only the life of a thief. Scooped from the streets as an orphan child, she thinks of the man who saved her as a father, though his dark moods and cruel manipulations keep her frightened of being abandoned again. Under his tutelage, she learns that with a suggestive smile or a heart-wrenching tale, she can lower men’s guards just long enough to steal their secrets. But when she is sent to seduce a handsome, golden-maned highlander bearing a message from the Bruce, soon she cannot tell who is playing whom, or if it is a game at all. Colin’s searing touch crumbles the walls around her heart, forcing Sabine to realize that her loyalty to her boss may come with a price - her life. When unseen forces threaten to tear their world apart, Sabine and Colin must choose between duty, loyalty, and love to save themselves - and each other. This full-length Scottish historical romance is part of the Highland Bodyguards Series, but also can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. The Tower of Babel is arguably among the most well-known allegories of the Old Testament. As told by the Book of Genesis, the story revolves around a post-flood batch of Noah's descendants who dwelled in Babylon's Mesopotamia, a city erected by King Nimrod. The population multiplied rapidly over the years, and the city's inhabitants fostered the growth of their culture and enhancing the infrastructure of their territories, made easier by the existence of only one common language. Naturally, the pride of the Mesopotamian residents burgeoned, but their contentment, poisoned by their greed and ambition, began to decline. The only way to prevail over this slump, believed a particularly enterprising group of individuals, was to construct a colossal ziggurat (a “rectangular, stepped tower”) that would ascend past the clouds and into the heavens. With this tower, they intended to “make a name for” mankind and the untouchable abilities of mere mortals, thereby severing their relationship with God, their creator, for good. According to the Bible, God was far from impressed, and to add insult to injury, the architects behind this attempt deliberately opted for man-made materials, such as brick and tar, rather than stone, timber, and other natural building blocks gifted to them by God. The overblown pomposity and conceit of his subjects had to be ceased at once, lest they stray further away from him. Thus, as the people slept, God reached down and scooped up handfuls of the slumbering Mesopotamians and strewed them across the continents, creating 70 different nations and tribes. When they awoke, the bewildered residents of the newly birthed nations were speaking in different tongues. With the architects scattered around the globe and now unable to understand one another, construction of the partially built ziggurat came screeching to a halt. It was later dubbed the “Tower of Babel”, or the “Tower of Confusion”. This miserable monument, which served as a haunting remi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Why did Hitler choose not to invade England when he had the chance? Europe, 1940. It's late summer, and Belgium has been overrun by the German army. Posing as a friar, a British operative talks his way into the monastery at Villers-devant-Orval just before Nazi art thieves plan to sweep through the area and whisk everything of value back to Berlin. But the ersatz man of the cloth is no thief. Instead, that night he adds an old leather Bible to the monastery's library and then escapes. London, 2017. A construction worker operating a backhoe makes a grisly discovery - a skeletal arm bone with a rusty handcuff attached to the wrist. Was this the site, as a BBC newsreader speculates, of "a long-forgotten prison, uncharted on any map?" One viewer knows better: it's all that remains of a courier who died in a V-2 rocket attack. The woman who will put these two disparate events together - and understand the looming tragedy she must hurry to prevent - is Russian historian and former Soviet chess champion Larissa Mendelova Klimt, "Lara the Bookworm", to her friends. She's also experiencing some woeful marital troubles. In the course of this riveting thriller, Lara will learn the significance of six musty Dictaphone cylinders recorded after D-day by Noël Coward - actor, playwright, and secretly, a British agent reporting directly to Winston Churchill. She will understand precisely why that leather Bible, scooped up by the Nazis and deposited on the desk of Adolf Hitler days before he planned to attack Britain, played such a pivotal role in turning his guns to the East. And she will discover the new secret pact negotiated by the nefarious Russian president and his newly elected American counterpart - maverick and dealmaker - and the evil it portends. Oh, and she'll reconcile with her husband. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kate Reading. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/blak/011374/bk_blak_011374_sample.mp3. The large room was packed nearly to the brim, and it appeared that most of the inn’s patrons were already in varying stages of intoxication. Bronn pushed gruffly past a young man who burped in his face as he passed, and made his way up to the shoddy wooden bar. He dropped his fist to the bar with a thud, causing the eyes of the disheveled bar wench to snap over to him. Sliding a dripping mug of ale to a patron at the other end of the bar, she crossed to Bronn and asked, "What’ll it be?""Ale is fine," he replied, letting a few small coins clatter against the bar. "You have any rooms free for tonight?"With a quick, practiced motion, the bartender scooped up the coins and slipped them into a small pocket against her ample bosom. As she filled another mug with ale, she nodded."Aye, there’s still a few free. How long will you be staying with us?"The bartender slid the mug into Bronn’s waiting hands. He tossed out a few more coins. "Just staying for tonight, love...unless you figure out a way to keep me here," he offered with a sly smile. She ignored him and returned to her other customers. With a shrug, Bronn picked up his mug and was just tasting his first sip of frothy ale, when a particularly loud wave of yelling drifted over from the far corner of the room. He glanced over to see what was happening, but the corner was too full and too shadowy to make out anything with certainty. With nothing better to do, and his curiosity piqued, Bronn pushed off the bar a ungekürzt.
