The Circles of Odin: A Detective Novel of 1929: The Cyrus Skeen Mysteries , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 293min
The time of The Circles of Odin is early September, 1929, after Skeen's case of the Daedàlus Society in July and before he discovers in November a Nazi Bund in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco, Skeen's main venue of his adventures. This ninth title in the Skeen detective series pits the formidable sleuth against a group of Nazi-affiliated cultists who wish to bring about the resurrection of an ancient, storied culture for which there is little archeological evidence but on which is based the material for scholarly volumes of legend and mythology. His chief nemesis is an organization called The Sons and Daughters of Thule. To bring about the reestablishment of Thule, agents of the Sons and Daughters resort to murder and target the wealthy of Nob Hill for sacrifices to the Norse god, Odin. An attempt to offer Skeen, a resident of Nob Hill, on that altar of sacrifice fails. In trying to identify the elusive killers, Skeen wades into the bizarre world of cultists, rituals, and Gothic fantasies and encounters the ruthless, schizophrenic, and mad believers in the legends of Thule. ungekürzt. The Daedalus Conspiracy: A Detective Novel of 1929: The Cyrus Skeen Series, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 585min
In Part One, Cyrus Skeen, private detective in 1929 San Francisco, is asked by Charles Gilchrest, chairman of The Daedàlus Society, an exclusive men-only club, to go to the The Daedàlus Grove, a private enclave north of the city, to determine the nature of some trouble he has been warned about in a cryptic note written by an anonymous member. The note alludes to a controversial Senator from Nebraska and a tariff bill in Congress. It may the overture to a prank or it may be a serious threat to the man's life. Skeen agrees to attend the two-week encampment of the Society in rustic Monte Rio, an annual event in the redwood forest with a reputation for Dionysian orgies and behind-the-scenes conspiracies to govern the nation. Posing as a writer, at first Skeen feels out of his natural element of the city, but he soon begins to focus on certain individuals and their peculiar behavior, and begins to collect clues. He eventually grasps that there is indeed a serious plot afoot, but its purpose eludes him. His presence arouses the enmity of many of the 800 attendees of the encampment. At the end he confronts a man in a Minotaur costume wielding a Minoan battle ax. In Part Two, Skeen returns San Francisco, certain that there was more to the conspiracy to assassinate a U.S. senator. Pursuing clues and leads found in the city's political machine and in the grime of its underworld, he wraps up the case with his usual flair, but loses a treasured friend at the climax. ungekürzt. Silver Screens: A Detective Novel of 1930: The Cyrus Skeen Series, Book 8 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 325min
It is April, 1930. The roaring '20s have ended. The nation is absorbing the shock of the stock market crash of the previous October. However, in the wake of the economic catastrophe, Cyrus Skeen, private detective, scion of East Coast wealth, and a figure in San Francisco society, is secure. He never bought on margin. In this eighth adventure of Skeen's, Hollywood reaches out to him - literally. A Hollywood producer visits his office and promises him the moon if he would agree to allow his persona and cases be used for some new movies, possibly starring William Powell or Ronald Colman. Skeen expresses no interest and asks the man to leave. The next day a friend brings him a news clipping about a major Hollywood studio negotiating with him over the rights to his past cases to produce a series of detective films - all talkies. The only problem is that the news item appeared in a Hollywood publication a week before the producer appeared in Skeen's office. Later that day his friend is murdered. As the clues to his friend's murder pile up, they all seem to point to a bizarre connection between a road accident that occurred in 1906, the ambitions of a California politician angling for the US Senate, and a captivating starlet who invites Skeen to a dalliance. Silver Screens probes the questionable links between Hollywood and politics in the detective's most complex and baffling case yet. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg Rizzo. Sleight of Hand: A Detective Novel of 1929: The Cyrus Skeen Mysteries, Book 10 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 230min
It is October of 1929. The roaring '20s will end with the stock market crash heard round the world. The nation will absorb the consequences of the crash with great difficulty over the next decade, exacerbated by government fiscal policies. However, in the wake of the coming economic catastrophe, Cyrus Skeen, private detective, scion of East Coast wealth, and a figure in San Francisco society, is secure. He never bought on margin. Skeen has a reputation - some would say a notoriety - for justice, and for meting out rough desserts to crooks, criminals, and other realty-dodgers. This has made him admired by some and feared by others. Sharks, conmen, and scam artists approach him with caution - if they dare approach him at all. In this episode of Skeen's cases he is invited by a new political party to stand for the office of public defender in next month's city election, a city office established to provide legal representation to the poor and indigent. He declines the invitation, but strange things keep happening, such as the curious death of the current public defender and the odd behavior of the principals of the new party. Skeen's interest is piqued. He begins to investigate, learning eventually that his clues lead all the way back to Wisconsin. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg Rizzo. An August Interlude: A Detective Novel of 1929: The Cyrus Skeen Mysteries, Book 12 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 325min
It's August, 1929. Fresh and rested from his case in The Daedàlus Conspiracy in July, which took him to the Daedàlus Grove in Northern California to foil an assassination attempt, Cyrus Skeen hires a new secretary, the promisingly capable Clara Reyes. Soon after that, he's approached by a man, Bruce Willowman, who wishes him to try to find the murderer of his younger brother, Beauregard, in San Francisco five years before. It seems that the man was murdered by a nun, a member of the Sisters of the Apostolic Faith, who drove a small crucifix through one of his eyes. The man appeared to have been drunk and had been booted from a high-class brothel close to the Apostolic Faith convent, and then attacked the nun. The nun subsequently disappeared from the convent. The police know her name and have her fingerprints, but cannot find her. The murder is now five years old, and the murderess, if found, would not be protected by a statute of limitations. The victim's brother received a note from a person who claimed to have witnessed the attack on the nun, and that now she had seen the murderess near the convent days before. When Skeen reads the note which contains the murderess' name, he's shocked to learn that it's someone he and his wife, Dilys, know very well. He doesn't tell Bruce Willowman that he knows the alleged murderess. He takes on the case and begins to uncover some curious and perilous secrets kept by the convent. ungekürzt. Language: English. Skeen's Search , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 714min
A space outlaw must rescue the remnants of an ancient alien race - before her galaxy explodes - in the conclusion to an action-packed science fiction trilogy. An unrepentant scoundrel and collector of priceless alien artifacts and treasures - like a tomb raider Lara Croft with issues and a spaceship, or a female Indiana Jones with a looser moral code - the inimitable Skeen makes her final appearance in a thrilling galaxy-hopping adventure that blends science fiction and quest fantasy in the finest Andre Norton tradition, inserting a healthy dose of Terry Pratchett Discworld wackiness for good measure. After stumbling through a one-way dimensional gate constructed eons earlier by the enigmatic and nearly extinct Ykx, Skeen has finally found her way off Mistommerk. Despite numerous trials and great turmoil, Skeen is at long last free, with a ship and crew that includes her new friends, shapeshifter Timka and Ykx keyholder Lipitero..But freedom always has a price, and Skeen must pay for her deliverance. She'll have to make her way through a treacherous galaxy to locate the planet Rallen - which may or may not actually exist - gather up any remaining Ykx she happens to find there, and bring them back to Mistommerk before the gate closes permanently.Their journey is about to take Skeen and her crewmates through some of the nastiest corners of a particularly nasty galaxy and towards an inevitable confrontation with the war vessels of a powerful and distinctly unfriendly Empire. But the biggest threat of all is the solar system itself: Its sun is about to go supernova, which could result in a very explosive finale indeed for Skeen and her space-going misadventures. With her exciting, ingenious, and wildly entertaining Skeen's Search, author Jo Clayton offers a fitting and supremely satisfying climax to her thrilling outer space saga, as one of the most uniquely endearing rogues in the history of speculative fiction takes her final ungekürzt. Rational Scrutiny: Paradoxes and Contradictions in Detective Fiction , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 292min
Rational Scrutiny: Paradoxes and Contradictions in Detective Fiction discusses why Chess Hanrahan and Cyrus Skeen, the author's premier heroes and the chief subjects of this volume, are not only extraordinary men of action, but “intellectuals” of the first rank, as well. As Cline writes in the Preface, detective fiction, as a rule, employs both "intellectuals" and "doers". Detectives solve problems; detectives usually do something about them. Problems cannot be solved until they are grasped, understood, and counter actions are identified. In the mystery and detective fiction genres, detectives solve problems that are criminal in nature. Crimes are a consequence of human volition; it is the detective's task to solve them. The problems must first arise before the detective can act. He does not act in a vacuum. He cannot "prevent" problems caused by others, or of which he is not yet aware, because they are products of human volition. Hanrahan, operating in our own time, and Skeen, acting in the third decade of the 20th century, have their own unique way of approaching crime-solving. Paradoxes do not exist in nature, they observe, nor should they exist in men's lives, values, and actions. Along the way, Cline refutes the common literary notion that some of the best fictional detectives in the past were not "intellectuals" in his essay, "The Wizards of Disambiguation," a critique of the post-modern, deconstructionist school of criticism. He concludes that Skeen and Hanrahan "only partly conform" to Raymond Chandler's description of an ideal detective, except that each abhors “a lively sense of the grotesque”, can express a quick but not necessarily “rude” wit, and harbors a disgust for sham and a contempt for pettiness. And neither is tarnished nor afraid. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg A. Rizzo. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/023380/bk_acx0_023380_sample.mp3.
