The author of Baldwin's Harlem looks at the evolving culture, politics, economics, and spiritual life of Detroit - a blend of memoir, love letter, history, and clear-eyed reportage that explores the city's past, present, and future and its significance to the African American legacy and the nation's fabric. Herb Boyd moved to Detroit in 1943, as race riots were engulfing the city. Though he did not grasp their full significance at the time, this critical moment would be one of many he witnessed that would mold his political activism and exposed a city restless for change. In Black Detroit, he reflects on his life and this landmark place, in search of understanding why Detroit is a special place for black people. Boyd reveals how black Detroiters were prominent in the city's historic, groundbreaking union movement and - when given an opportunity - were among the tireless workers who made the automobile industry the center of American industry. Well-paying jobs on assembly lines allowed working-class black Detroiters to ascend to the middle class and achieve financial stability, an accomplishment not often attainable in other industries. Boyd makes clear that while many of these middle-class jobs have disappeared, decimating the population and hitting blacks hardest, Detroit survives thanks to the emergence of companies such as Shinola - which represent the strength of the Motor City and its continued importance to the country. He also brings into focus the major figures who have defined and shaped Detroit, including William Lambert, the great abolitionist; Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown; Coleman Young, the city's first black mayor; diva songstress Aretha Franklin; Malcolm X; and Ralphe Bunche, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. With a stunning eye for detail and passion for Detroit, Boyd celebrates the music, manufacturing, politics, and culture that make it an American original. ungekürzt. Language: English. Golden Throat, a raw, heart-pounding epic adventure of danger, love, and murderous intrigue, is the premier release of a non-stop murder mystery series set in 1930s LA by the atmospheric and detailed author, James P. Alsphert. Golden Throat is about the life and times of Cable Denning, an ex-cop turned private eye who faces head-on the forces and violence of an unjust world both in this and other dimensions. Alsphert introduces Cable Denning, the hero and vigilante of this spell-binding 22-book murder mystery series. As an LA policeman, he is disillusioned with the corruption within the LAPD. When he ultimately opts for the life of a private detective, the adventure begins. The audiobook opens at what first appears to be a typical crime scene. Cable accidentally stumbles upon a mysterious golden capsule, lodged in the throat of a not-quite-human victim at the local morgue. This results in a dangerous and covert case that will follow and haunt him as he is pursued by sinister underground criminals and powerful organizations, both terrestrial and non-terrestrial.Always looking over his shoulder into the shadows of constant danger and armed with his .38, a packet of Lucky Strikes, and a hidden flask of gin, he hears a distant sax playing in his head as he walks the streets of LA, escaping whenever possible into the smoky dives, searching out the sultry voice of an alluring songstress as she pours out the heartbeat of the city through the Great American Songbook.Cable drinks himself into oblivion and is found by Adora who, at his side, breathes fresh life and love into him. From the midst of seemingly overwhelming horror and psychic trauma, Cable emerges with one of his brilliantly observant narratives that always ends with him back on his feet and answering his telephone, “Yeah, Cable Denning here....” ungekürzt. Joannamelas.com Infusing smooth jazz with latin, pop, funk and soul and influenced by her gospel music background, talented singer-songwriter-entertainer, Joanna Melas, has now released her debut album 'A Natural Selection' featuring her three new originals, 'Danca Da Chuva', 'We Had No Cares' and 'Such As These' plus seven cleverly arranged covers. The variety of tunes alone on this album will convince anyone of her ability to adapt. From the dance floor of 'Danca Da Chuva' and 'We Had No Cares' (originals by Joanna) to the smoky jazz club in 'The Look of Love', to the hauntingly beautiful spiritual folk tune 'Such as These' (another original by Joanna), the heart stopping brassy shuffle of 'Fly Too High' and the straight blues/rock of 'First We Take Manhattan' - Joanna eases through this 'A Natural Selection' with poise and flair. With a beautiful blend of passion, excitement and technical brilliance her rich soulful voice soars effortlessly over complex and mature arrangements transporting you from one song to the next on a journey of musical landscapes. If this first offering is anything to go by, buyers will be eagerly awaiting any future recording by Joanna Melas. Having cultivated a successful career as an accomplished singer and entertainer, one of the busiest on the Sydney circuit, Joanna arrived at the recording studio with plans to release an album of the covers most requested at her gigs. However working on the album unleashed the songwriter within and Joanna revisited some of her earlier compositions, including Such As These. Creative energies taking over, she was inspired to write again and Joanna wrote Danca da Chuva and We Had No Cares. Recording took place over three months, with around 113 hours spent at Style Music Studios in The Hunter Valley. Programming and mixing by the very gifted Phil Tweed. Guitars were played by Phil Tweed, Dieter Kleemann and Joanna Melas. Phil also played piano, keys, bass, drums and percussion. Craig Walters was on tenor saxaphone, Stewart Kirwan on muted trumpet and flugelhorn, Leigh Sherringham on trombone. Each track was co-produced and co-arranged by Joanna and Phil and then mastered by Oscar Gaona at Studios 301 in Sydney. Zack Daggy (Music Journalist) writes: "Joanna Melas is a singer with a voice that is made for the stage. Her album A Natural Selection features an eclectic collection of stage favorites and originals. The sounds range from Latin beats to a sweet serenades, from reggae rhythms to sultry blues. There is something for everyone on this album. It is a vacation for the ears. First and foremost, Melas's voice is utterly amazing. With her cover of the song "Love Letters," her vocals are as smooth as velvet. It's sexy, it's sultry and most of all it's captivating. Melas radiates with charisma. To be a great singer on stage, it takes more than just hitting all the right notes. To use a cliché, you have to have "it," and Melas definitely has it! Just give one listening to her original song "We Had No Cares" and you will see. It's Latin flair and Melas's rich vocals complement each other beautifully. It has the perfect blend of relaxing melodies and energizing rhythms. Her song "Danca Da Chuva" could very well be described the same. Melas seems the most in her element when singing songs that are rich with a Latin influence. In fact, Melas at times sounds quite a bit like Gloria Estefan. She has the same instant likability. She is a star in the making. Since the majority of this album is cover songs, arrangement is everything. While most of the songs remain relatively close to their classic arrangements, it is the bold compositions that truly stand out. In particular, Melas's reggae version of the Frankie Valli classic "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," comes off as sublime. The reggae influence adds an interesting island vibe to the song. This in turn establishes an immensely romantic and intimate connection with the listener. Indeed, if there is one emotion that A Natural Selection exudes, it is romance. Tracks like "The Look Of Love" and "Love Letters" are perfect for sitting in front of a fireplace and sipping wine with that special someone. Joanna Melas is the sound of love. Perhaps the only disappointment with A Natural Selection is that there is far too many cover songs on this album. Melas does an excellent job with performing every one of these covers, but it feels like she has so much more to offer. Her original tracks "Danca Da Chuva" and "We Had No Cares" are by far the best tracks on this album... Tracks like "Break In The Weather" feature a soulful and thoroughly enjoyable saxophone solo. Others like "First We Take Manhattan" showcase some extraordinary blues guitar riffs. There is no denying that this album features some stunning instrumentation... A Natural Selection is a solid album with songs of romance and pure emotion. Joanna Melas has a smooth yet powerful voice that demands attention... this is an album worth checking out." Matthew Warnock (Music Journalist) writes: Artists such as Sade, Sting and Michael Bolton are great examples of musicians who choose to bring multiple musical styles and backgrounds together, producing a sound that was unique and that had a broader appeal than some of their more specifically focused contemporaries. Australian vocalist and songwriter-arranger Joanna Melas is an artist that firmly fits into this second category of performer, and her album A Natural Selection, is a collection of pop, jazz, Latin and R&B influenced songs that blur the lines of musical genre, while at the same time maintaining a strong sense of musicality and high level of performance that connects each distinctive musical output. The album contains three original compositions and seven covers of well-known pop and jazz songs arranged by Melas and her musical partner Phil Tweed. The originals are well-written, and each contains a distinctive sound that brings to light different aspects of Melas' musical tastes. "Danca Da Chuva," which means "Rain Dance" in Portuguese, contains Latin inspired beats and a soft, joyful melody line that outlines the song's lyrics in a way that is both engaging and enjoyable at the same time. The verse sections will remind listeners of the Columbian songstress Shakira, though when the chorus breaks in, the smoothness of the vocal line is purely Melas. This is the reason the song is successful, and the album as a whole, that Melas is able to bring an element of the familiar to her music, while injecting enough personality to make the album stand out among the crowded musical marketplace. The next original composition is "We Had No Cares," which is also Latin influenced, but this time with a quasi-Montuno beat that reminds one of a Cuban beach on a hot summer's day. The hand percussion also adds an extra level of musical interest that raises the song from a typical Latin work to a song that stands on it's own two feet. As well, "Such as These," contains more of a pop vibe, with some enchanting vocal harmonies that really enhance the listener's experience of this piece. The song could have easily been solid without the added voices, but by added the extra thickness to the ends of certain phrases, the melody and lyrics really spring to life, something that one will appreciate, that extra musical mile that makes all the difference with a song such as this. Besides the original compositions, the album contains creative and enjoyable versions of pop and jazz standards such as "First We Take Manhattan," "The Look of Love" and "For All We know." As with the originals, Melas and Tweed inject their musical personalities into each arrangement, justifying their song choices and providing a new listening experience for people who are familiar with this 20th century classics. Overall, A Natural Selection is a strong effort from Melas, one that blends tradition with her own personality in an enjoyable mixture of new and old that can appeal to a broad range of musi

Los Angeles-based chanteuse Tawny Ellis: nomadic by design, an angelic and kick-ass songstress, inspired by Michelangelo and David Bowie by way of Ernest Hemingway. A potent brew of Patsy Cline, The Pretenders and Neil Young, Ellis has accrued a legion of fans, all seduced by the dynamic live show and that irresistibly gorgeous voice. Born in Savannah, Georgia, the captivating singer-songwriter now divides her time between Los Angeles and New Orleans - a split reflected in her music, which has always blended a blast of west coast freshness with some soulful bayou depth. Ellis's forthcoming album "Evolve or Die", a departure from her last album "Shelter", calls up her Americana roots and even leans a bit country. Ellis's voice is a perfect fit for this sound, and is reminiscent of artists like Pasty Cline and Peggy Lee. It's a pure, pitch-perfect voice that can quiver and twang, soaring to delicate heights, swooping to a rich, guttural fullness: what holds it all together is always Ellis's heart-wrenching presence at the emotional center of the song. Both in live performance and on the album, Ellis works with her long-time writing partner, musical director and multi-instrumentalist, the respected musician's musician and craftsman Giovanni Loria. While Ellis moulds the lyrics and melodies, Loria masterfully pulls everything together, co-writing and producing. Many of their songs have been placed on T.V. and Film soundtracks. This will be their third Independent release. Loria has worked, among others, with Jack Johnson, The Black Eyed Peas and Everlast. The much-anticipated album "Evolve or Die" will be released the Fall of 2008. Ellis will be touring the U.S in August and September and Europe in the Fall. Current News: New Album "Evolve or Die" to be officially released Fall 2008. Currently on tour in the Southern U.S. through mid October. Tawny will be touring California, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas & Tennessee. Current Singles: "Baby You're the One", "Evolve or Die" and "Endless Black Ribbon". "Evolve or Die" has been added to several radio play lists already in it's pre release status in Texas, Arkansas and several stations in France, the UK, Germany and Belgium. Tawny will be performing a few select dates in Europe in the Fall of 2008. Locations include: France and Belgium. Extensive touring is being planned in support of the "Evolve or Die" album in America and Europe for spring and summer of 2009. The title track "Evolve or Die" has been placed in a new film entitled "A Woman In The West" which reunites the main cast of HBO's classic series "Deadwood". The song is not only used over the end credit sequence, but was also re arranged and re recorded as original theme music throughout the film. Much of Ellis' music has been place in Film and T.V. Tawny has performed at some of L.A.'s best venues including the Hotel Café, The Viper Room, House of Blues, and The Mint. Tawny has also played various events and festivals including: Sunset Junction with Ben Harper & Autolux (average crowd of approx. 25k people), The Downtown L.A. Detour Fest with Beck and Queens of the Stone Age,(30k people Annual event). Tawny headlined the Labor Union's "Hollywood to the Docks", a rally for fair wages, in 2008 to a crowd of nearly 10,000 people.

Review by Mike Morgan: Album Title: Meet You In The Club Artist: Candy Rose Reviewer's Name: Michael Morgan Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Review Summary: Dance gems abound on this quick shot disc of 7 club tracks from budding British artist Candy Rose. After listening to Candy Rose's Meet You In The Club for the first time, there will never be a last. It's that hot. Review: Dance gem remixes abound on this quick shot disc of 7 club tracks from budding British artist, Candy Rose. After listening to Candy Rose's Meet You In The Club for the first time, there will never be a last. It's that hot. The first 3 tracks are a trifecta of dance music body blows. The race car rhythm and airy chorus of 'Hooked on You" is an energetic start to the record while the bullet-like back-beat and synth frenzy of 'Just So You Know' rockets in from outer space. The third track, 'You Are Everything,' the strongest song on the album, has so much infectious rhythm in it that if indie electro-dance DJs knew about this Latin dance slap in the face, they would be begging to remix it. The songstress explores Latin flavors of meringue pianos on the grinder 'You Are Everything' and composes a dance party with sonic urgency on 'Stop Talking.' The latter song brings with it a girl-power force that echoes early No Doubt à la 'Don't Speak,' or Janet Jackson's 'Nasty Boys.' Even though Ms. Rose tends to experiment with different dance rhythms on songs like 'It's You That I Love,' she doesn't veer far from the core pop hooks that make the songs so appealing. But don't be mislead that she would appeal solely to the commercial masses, deeper listening reveals more. Although the majority of tracks are in the same vein as commercial pop and dance radio, there are undercurrents of progressive dance in a couple of the songs. 'Now I'm Gone' possesses a Middle Eastern sound that eventually peaks into a trance-like crescendo. It's songs like these that fall outside the terrestrial radio realm. This is the area where Ms. Rose can break the mainstream dance club mold, much the same way Santigold has done in the hip-hop world. If Candy can push the edges the same way she does on tracks like 'You Are Everything' and 'Now I'm Gone,' her music will carry with it not only commercial appeal, but brand new audiences. Meet You In The Club is one of those albums that can be played straight through a gym workout or long car drive to somewhere far and intriguing. One part dance party queen, and another progressive dance club vixen, Ms. Rose has the pop goods and dance music chops to break through both commercial and indie underground success. Fans of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera should buy this record now.
