State of Emergency: The Way We Were: Britain, 1970-1974 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1926min
In the early 1970s, Britain seemed to be tottering on the brink of the abyss. Under Edward Heath, the optimism of the Sixties had become a distant memory. Now the headlines were dominated by strikes and blackouts, unemployment and inflation. As the world looked on in horrified fascination, Britain seemed to be tearing itself apart. And yet, amid the gloom, glittered a creativity and cultural dynamism that would influence our lives long after the nightmarish Seventies had been forgotten. Dominic Sandbrook has recreated the gaudy, schizophrenic atmosphere of the early Seventies: the world of Enoch Powell and Tony Benn, David Bowie and Brian Clough, Germaine Greer and Mary Whitehouse. An age when the unions were on the march and the socialist revolution seemed at hand, but also when feminism, permissiveness, pornography and environmentalism were transforming the lives of millions. It was an age of miners’ strikes, tower blocks and IRA atrocities, but it also gave us celebrity footballers and high-street curry houses, organic foods and package holidays, gay rights and glam rock. For those who remember the days when you could buy a new colour television but power cuts stopped you from watching it, this book could hardly be more vivid. It is the perfect guide to a luridly colourful Seventies landscape that shaped our present from the financial boardroom to the suburban bedroom.Dominic Sandbrook was born in Shropshire in 1974, an indirect result of the Heath government's three-day week giving couples more leisure time. He is now a prolific reviewer and commentator, writing regularly for the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Sunday Times. He is the author of two hugely acclaimed books on Britain in the Fifties and Sixties, Never Had It So Good and White Heat. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Thorpe. The Complete Works of Tacitus: Volume 3: The History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 696min
In all of Roman history there was never a more turbulent year than A.D. 69, the ill-omened "Year of the Three Emperors". By some miracle, the greatest historian of the age, Tacitus, was able to chronicle those momentous events in a work he called The History. In its pages are some of the most memorable events of Roman history described in some of the most intensely passionate prose ever devised. Tacitus was a genius of the highest rank and his searing epigrammatic style has never been equaled, nor put to greater use. The History opens with the events following the assassination of Nero. Galba, an elderly senator of noble lineage, is the first to claim the crown. But his reign is short...only one month. Civil war immediately breaks out. Defying him is the rakish Otho, an aristocrat of singularly corrupt morals, both in his public and private life. Since the troops favor him over Galba, they murder the old emperor and elevate Otho. But Otho, in the mistaken belief that his troops have deserted him, cannot keep the throne in the face of Vitellius' emerging challenge and he commits suicide rather than face war. Vitellius, as corrupt and weak as his predecessor, is challenged in his turn by a successful general who has been proclaimed emperor by his own troops in Egypt, Vespasian. As civil unrest spirals out of control in Italy, renewed war breaks out in Germany, Illyria, and Judaea. As it turns out, Vespasian is the only man who can command the kind of respect and loyalty to keep the tottering empire on its feet. This production uses the famous translation by Church and Brodribb, considered the finest in the English language. The Complete Works of Tacitus continues in Volume 4 with three short works: "The Life of Agricola", "Germany and its Tribes", and "The Dialogue on Oratory". ungekürzt. Language: English. The Kamikazes: The History of Japan's World War II Suicide Pilots , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 88min
One of the most fascinating aspects of World War II was Japan's use of suicide pilots known around the globe as kamikazes, though the Japanese referred to them as Tokubetsu kōgekitai ("Special Attack Units"). Translated as "God Wind", "Divine Wind", and "God Spirit", kamikazes would sink 47 Allied vessels and damage over 300 by the end of the war, but the rise in the use of kamikaze attacks was evidence of the loss of Japan's air superiority and its waning industrial might. This method of fighting would become more common by the time Iwo Jima was fought over in early 1945, and it was especially prevalent during the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945. The "privilege" of being selected as a kamikaze pilot played directly into the deep-seated Japanese mindset of "death before defeat". The pilot training manual assured each kamikaze candidate that when they eliminated all thoughts of life and death, fear of losing the earthly life can be easily overcome. Still, not all cases of those chosen to be kamikazes were equally noble. Recruits were trained with torturous regimens or corporal punishment, and stories of mental impairment caused by drugs or saki abound. Some were described as "tottering" and dazed, being carried to their planes by maintenance officers, and forcibly pushed in if they backed down. Pilots who could not find their targets were told to turn around and spare their own lives for another day, but if a pilot returned nine times, he was to be shot. At the moment of collision, he was instructed to keep his eyes open at all times, and to shout "Hissatsu" ("clear kill"). The Kamikazes chronicles the history of Japan's famous suicide pilots and explains when, why, and how Japan resorted to their use near the end of war. ungekürzt. Language: English. Falklands War: A History from Beginning to End , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 78min
Discover the remarkable history of the Falklands War...The Falklands War, which erupted in 1982, was a conflict between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Argentina over sovereignty of the Falklands, a group of largely uninhabited islands in the South Atlantic. The islands had under two thousand inhabitants and little particular strategic or commercial importance when they became the object of the war. Still, disputes over whether these islands belonged to Great Britain or Argentina had been underway for many years. During negotiations in the late 1970s, Britain seemed willing to consider transferring the sovereignty of the islands to Argentina. Continuing lobbying by the islanders themselves, however, prevented this from happening. In Argentina, the brutal rule of a military dictatorship was tottering under rising unemployment, massive inflation, and popular unrest. A short, successful war seemed like the perfect way to bolster the popularity of the military junta. After all, it seemed very unlikely that Britain would actually go to war over a few small islands eight thousand miles away.To the surprise of almost everyone, that is precisely what happened. Within three days of the Argentine invasion, a British naval task force was on its way to the South Atlantic. This would be the first conflict in which Britain had been involved since the Korean War and the first conflict in which British warships were sunk since World War II. For many British people, this was their first experience of war.The Falklands War lasted just over 74 days, but it claimed the lives of hundreds of soldiers, sailors, and airmen. This is the story of that war.Discover a plethora of topics such as:Prelude to WarOperation RosarioThe British ResponseThe War BeginsThe Battle for San Carlos WaterThe Recapture of StanleyAnd much more!So if you want a concise and informative ungekürzt. Geisha: Culture & Religion , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
Learn about the history of the Geisha with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.Mystery and misconception surround the geisha. At first glance, she may appear to be rather average looking, heavily clad in a weighty costume and an excess of make-up. But behind this mask lies a range of artistic skills and social etiquettes of immense importance to Japanese culture past and present. The most common place to find a geisha today is in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan before Tokyo –or Edo- took over. Even so, it is rare to see a real geisha walking the streets there. There are Japanese girls who look like geisha - wearing colorful kimonos with thick obis wrapped tightly around their waist, tottering along on pairs of wooden okobo. But real geisha are more likely to be sleeping late, emerging at night to entertain well-paid and well-paying businessmen, politicians and the like. The word geisha literally means “a person of artistic skill”. In Kyoto, the words geiko and maiko are more commonly used. A geiko is a fully qualified geisha, while a maiko is still in training. Chaos, confusion, and disintegration fall with swift, breathtaking disaster upon America! Already terrorized by a tottering, unstable world, American men and women are swept into a mad stampede when the great leaders of the nation are spirited away one by one to return as broken men, useless and inept. Here Jimmy Christopher - Operator #5 - sets forth on his most thrilling and dangerous exploit while the great brains of America surrender to madness and despair, as a leaderless people seethe in revolt against a government that is crumbling before their eyes. How can Operator #5 singlehandedly hope to prevail against that dread master of broken men? A woman screamed once...and 1,000 guests in that great Washington ballroom stood frozen with terror as the blood-mad horde of naked savages turned the place into a reeking charnel house. But that was only the beginning.... America's greatest industrial and political leaders become, overnight, gibbering maniacs while a fear-frenzied, despairing nation revolts against a crumbling, dying government! How can Operator #5, alone, hope to prevail against this dread master of broken men? They called this new threat to America's freedom the "man breaker". Is he an agent of a foreign power or a traitor burrowing through the national bowels like a termite of silent but relentless destruction? Does it matter when the country's most prominent leaders fall before his cruel tortures like spineless rag dolls? As savage riots spring up across the benighted land, Jimmy Christopher, Operator #5, takes up his pistol and rapier and undertakes a desperate manhunt for the mastermind before the nation plunges into a new dark age of doom. Into this uncontrollable political crisis plunges Jimmy Christopher - only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit and stands prepared to perish to protect his country. With inflation mounting, rubbish in the streets, bombs going off across London, and the economy in meltdown, the days of national greatness seemed a fading memory. Across the Western world, Britain was mocked as the "Sick Man of Europe", a byword for decline and self-destruction. Redesigning Life: How Genome Editing Will Transform the World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 618min
Since the birth of civilization, human beings have manipulated other life-forms. We have selectively bred plants and animals for thousands of years to maximize agricultural production and cater to our tastes in pets. The observation of the creation of artificial animal and plant variants was a key stimulant for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The ability to directly engineer the genomes of organisms first became possible in the 1970s, when the gene for human insulin was introduced into bacteria to produce this protein for diabetics. At the same time, mice were modified to produce human growth hormone, and grew huge as a result. But these were only our first tottering steps into the possibilities of genetic engineering. In the past few years, the pace of progress has accelerated enormously. We can now cut and paste genes using molecular scissors with astonishing ease, and the new technology of genome editing can be applied to practically any species of plants or animals. 'Mutation chain reaction' can be used to alter the genes of a population of pests, such as flies; as the modified creatures breed, the mutation is spread through the population, so that within a few generations the organism is almost completely altered. At the same time, scientists are also beginning to synthesize new organisms from scratch. These new technologies hold much promise for improving lives. Genome editing has already been used clinically to treat AIDS patients, by genetically modifying their white blood cells to be resistant to HIV. In agriculture, genome editing could be used to engineer species with increased food output, and the ability to thrive in challenging climates. New bacterial forms may be used to generate energy. But these powerful new techniques also raise important ethical dilemmas and potential dangers, pressing issues that are already upon us given the speed of scientific developments. To what extent should parents be able to manipulate the genetic ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Noah Michael Levine. Circulicity
Circulicity is the 2010 debut release from jazz guitarist and composer Billy Denk, featuring The John Weber Trio. Denk has become a welcome addition to the Chicago jazz scene. He founded Jazz on the Square in 2007 to promote jazz education and performance. In addition, his group, the Glazz Ensemble, regularly perform their hybrid of jazz, funk and jazzy interpretations of modern pop throughout Chicago. With this release, Denk offers twelve original jazz compositions backed by The John Weber Trio. The album shows it's influences clearly and creatively. One can hear the guitar of Kenny Burrell or Grant Green on the Latin pieces, bop workouts, funky blues or tender ballads. The expressive piano work of David Childress is reminiscent of Tommy Flanagan and Bill Evans. The rhythm section, featuring Chicago jazz veterans Chris Ray on bass and John Weber on drums, channels Evans' own rhythm section of Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. Denk chose The John Weber Trio because of it's mastery at interpreting Evans' pieces, feeling that their interplay would fit his compositions. Though the classic jazz influences are clear, the compositions sound modern thanks to the engineering of Josh Richter. His work can be heard on releases by Bobby Broom, Typhanie Monique and the Deep Blue Organ Trio. The recording opens with "Waltzing on the Square.' The interplay between the rhythm section and the lead instruments is telepathic. "Bird in Flight" is a Thelonious Monk-inspired tune that threatens to come unhinged, but surprisingly keeps on track. Childress particularly shines on the solo. "Swing Lake" is Denk's interpretation of the Swan Lake theme by Tchaikovsky. Preceding it is "Tessa Claire,' a beautiful solo guitar piece inspired by Johnny Smith. The teetering, tottering "Seesaw" is a hard blues piece that then grooves in modal territory. The title tune, 'Circulicity' is Denk's take on bop with the musicians having room to stretch creatively. "Sunday Afternoon,' co-written by Childress, may inspire one to take a Sunday stroll in Central Park on a summer day! The rest of the disc is full of interesting song choices and passionate performances. Denk's original compositions come alive with the dynamic contributions of Childress, Ray and Weber. Consider this a fresh sounding release deserving of room in your jazz collection! -E. Reeves.- Shop: odax
