Discover the sleepy little hamlet of Bard's Head and meet the sleepy detectives who operate there. Join George Tewksbury and Ellery Forbes in this collection of their first five whimsical, and more-than-slightly silly, cases. Case 001: The Big Blue To-Do In which Professor Kingfisher Potts, Head Zookeeper at the Bard's Head Zoo, discovers his star giraffe is suddenly a vibrant, bright blue color. Case 002: The Midnight Mermaid Murders In which someone is threatening Captain Banana McBannon by vandalizing the mermaid figurehead on her touring replica pirate ship in the wee small hours of the night. Case 003: The Disappearing Act In which magician Presto DeMarco's lovely assistant disappears in the middle of his act, and doesn't reappear. Case 004: Yodel-Luck-Undo In which Tewksbury and Forbes go undercover at the International Championship of Yodeling to find yodeler Tirolean Knopf's missing lucky lederhosen. Case 005: The Double Duo Detection Duel In which the narcoleptic detectives face off again against a rival pair of big city P.I.s in a race to discover who stole the mayor's prize statue, "Ham Sandwich." George and Ellery are aided in their efforts by their elderly secretary, Ermengarde Lilliput, who offers sage advice whilst never missing a stitch in her knitting, and Officer Apricot Dorrit, a no-nonsense policewoman who is often secretly amused by their antics. Get ready to giggle at the screwball shenanigans of these slumbering sleuths! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: A.E. Hopwood. One of the strangest, most obscure, and intriguing stories from the last century of popular music is that of Emmett Miller. He helped define the popular music of the last 75 years, and for the most part, today he is all but forgotten. Emmett Miller left many legacies which influenced the American musical landscape for generations. Certainly his singing style - the odd nasal pitch tone, along with the breaking of lines and bars in a song to a high yodel-like yelp - has been imitated by scores of singers since Miller first waxed his signature style to record in 1924. Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, Lefty Fritzell, the Rhythm Wreckers, Bob Wills, Woody Guthrie, Howlin' Wolf, and Bob Dylan all have been influenced by Miller's one-of-a-kind vocal abilities. Of equal importance was Miller's visionary fusion of blues and jazz, country and swing, black and white, comedy and crooning.Whether he knew what he was doing at the time or not, Miller almost single-handedly tore down the strict boundaries of musical ideas of the era. Here was a young, white, Christian man from the south, singing hot-jazz and black music in the north. Performing as a blackface with some of the most influential jazz musicians of all time (Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Eddie Lang, Jack Teagarden, and more). He created an entirely new style of country: pop. Country which swung. Country that was equally parts white and black, urban and rural. Country that was slurred through whiskey, girls, the road, and came out as the earliest forms of beatnik jive. Listening to Miller's music today, one can hear the startling sound of a man perfectly in sync with the present: he's influenced by the past, while he anticipated what was coming just around the bend. For fans of music history, musicology, americana, country music, hillbilly, minstrelsy and vaudeville. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jack Norton. Music has been the better part of my career. Movies are wonderful fun and they give you a famous face. But how the words and melody are joined, how they come together out of air and enter the mind, this is art. Songs are forever. (Gene Autry) "I did pretty good for a guy who never finished high school and used to yodel at square dances." (Roy Rogers) In the early 20th century, Westerns were one of the most popular genres in Hollywood. One of the young stars at the forefront was Gene Autry, a Texan whose life story made him a natural to be the country's most famous "singing cowboy". Autry would become a symbol of masculinity and morality on screen during the 1930s, but it was effortless for someone who had already grown up riding horses to school. Autry came of age at a time when the "singing cowboy" was at the apex of his popularity, and like his most famous successor, Roy Rogers, Autry actually got his start in show business as a singer. Even today, Autry might be best known for being a pioneer of country music and the author of Christmas hits "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Frosty the Snowman", and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Autry would produce hundreds of recordings during his life, helping ensure the popularity of the country music genre and earning inductions into several related halls of fame. Of course, the popularity of Autry's music and country music in general was bolstered by the fact that he became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. After he was discovered in 1934, Autry made dozens of films and was still one of the industry's biggest moneymakers when he went off to fight in World War II. ungekürzt. Language: English.
