Black Angels (eBook, ePUB)
Black Angels tells the true story of 300 black nurses who changed the course of history, beginning in 1929 when white nurses staged a walk out at Staten Island's 2000-bed TB sanatorium, threatening New York with a public health catastrophe. City health officials made a radical decision to sanction a national call for 'colored nurses'. Lured by the promise of good pay, education, housing and most of all, a rare opportunity to work in a hospital free of quotas and segregated wards, 'Black Angels' from all over the country boarded trains and buses to enter wards that held both hope and danger. Their triumphant story, bringing together medicine, politics, racial strife, women's rights and cutting-edge science, has up until now been almost completely ignored. Maria Smilios has been working with one of the Black Angels - Virginia Allen, now aged 84 - as well as ex-patients whom the Angels cared for.- Shop: buecher

The Children , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1930min
The Children is David Halberstam's brilliant and moving evocation of the early days of the civil rights movement, as seen through the story of the young people - the children - who met in the 1960s and went on to lead the revolution. Magisterial in scope, with a strong you-are-there quality, The Children is a story that one of America's preeminent journalists has waited years to write, a powerful audiobook about one of the most dramatic movements in American history. They came together as part of Reverend James Lawson's workshops on nonviolence, eight idealistic black students whose families had sacrificed much so they could go to college. And they risked it all, and their lives besides, when they joined the growing civil rights movement. David Halberstam shows how Martin Luther King, Jr., recruited Lawson to come to Nashville to train students in Gandhian techniques of nonviolence. We see the strength of the families the children came from, moving portraits of several generations of the black experience in America. We feel Diane Nash's fear before the first sit-in to protest segregation of Nashville lunch counters, and then we see how Diane Nash and others - John Lewis, Gloria Johnson, Bernard Lafayette, Marion Barry, Curtis Murphy, James Bevel, Rodney Powell - persevered until they ultimately accomplished that goal. After the sit-ins, when the Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate buses were in danger of being stopped because of violence, it was these same young people who led the bitter battle into the Deep South. Halberstam takes us into those buses, lets us witness the violence the students encountered in Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma. And he shows what has happened to the children since the 1960s as they have gone on with their lives. The Children bears the trademark qualities that have made David Halberstam one of the leading nonfiction writers of our era. The Children is his most personal work sinc ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bahni Turpin. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/006414/bk_rand_006414_sample.mp3. Travel Tales Monthly: No. 11 MAY 2015 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 159min
Michael Brein's Travel Tales Monthly Bookazine Issue No. 11 for May 2015 contains among the best travel stories from Michael's huge collection of about 10,000 travel tales that he has gathered in interviews with nearly 1,750 world travelers and adventurers during his four decades of travel to more than 125 countries throughout the world. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Remember the funny movie with John Candy called Planes, Trains and Automobiles? Well, actually, trains, buses, cars, taxis, VW buses, vans, tuk-tuks, camels, and other miscellaneous transport-related stories are what this issue of Travel Tales Monthly is all about. Not airplanes and ships stories this time, mind you; these are covered elsewhere in the Travel Psychologist Travel Tales Series with audiobooks specifically devoted to these particular subjects. In this issue A train, bus, car, ship, airplane, taxi, or other form of travel transport is invariably in the news today. And so it is: there's hardly a day now that a transportation-related incident or accident of some sort or another is not in the news somewhere. Therefore, we're a lot more concerned about the modes of transport that form a very significant part of our travel lives, so, naturally, we're taking a lot closer look at our travel transport these days than we have ever done before. And regarding the psychology of travel, in particular, we should take a much closer look at what actually happens to us on the various forms of transport that we take in our travels and how this all impacts our travel-lives. And so, in The Travel Psychologist Travel Tales Series, this is exactly what I do. Transportation stories include the full range of the human land, sea, and air travel transport experience, including a variety of forms of travel transportation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Diary from My Wheelchair PLUS Willy and the Time Machine Part 1: Collection of Adventures for Kids: Transcend Mediocrity Book 52 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 52min
I'm sorry, sweetie, said Mrs. Rankin, "But you can't go." Natalie's face froze as she digested the words. I can't go? "Wh - why not?" But she had a feeling she already knew the answer. Mrs. Rankin swallowed, clearly uncomfortable, but in that moment, Natalie didn't care. Her stomach was filled with dread. "Our school buses don't have ramps, so there'd be no way for you to get on and off, or bring your chair with you." Natalie blinked, fighting back the annoyance. "Can't you just order a new bus? Or rent one, or something?" "Tha - that - the expenses for a new bus simply aren't in our budget right now." Rubbish, Natalie thought. But she didn't say that. Instead, she looked down." ungekürzt. In The Dolphin's Wake: Cocktails, Calamities, and Caiques in the Greek Islands , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 506min
An amusing and erudite account of Harry Bucknall's 183-day journey through the Greek islands from Venice, in the West, to Istanbul, in the East. In the summer of 2006, Harry Bucknall travelled from Venice to Istanbul - a journey across the Aegean of more than 5,500 miles that included the glories of Mount Athos, 36 islands, and every island chain in the Greek Archipelago. It also involved 57 sea passages on 35 ferries, 4 landing craft, 3 hydrofoils, a fishing caique, a sea plane, 11 buses, 2 trains, an open-top Land Rover, and a duck-egg-blue 1961 Morris Oxford. Recounted with humour, pathos, and at times drama, this is not only a journey through the Greek islands but also a journey through Greek history, mythology, custom, and folklore - a Greek island companion loaded with adventure, mishap, and laughter offering a contemporary image of Aegean life today. ungekürzt. Amazing Adventures of a Nobody: A Life Changing Journey Across America Relying on the Kindness of Strangers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 363min
Tired of his disconnected life and uninspiring job, Leon Logothetis leaves it all behind - job, money, home, and even his cell phone - and hits the road with nothing but the clothes on his back and five dollars in his pocket, relying on the kindness of strangers and the serendipity of the open road for his daily keep. Along the way, Leon offers up the intriguing and charming tales gathered along his one-of-a-kind journey: riding in trains, buses, big rigs and classic cars; sleeping on streets and couches and firehouses; meeting pimps and preachers, astronauts and single moms, celebrities and homeless families, veterans and communists. Each day of his journey, we catch sight of the invisible spiritual underpinning of society in these stories of companionship - and sheer adventure - that prove that the kind, good soul of mankind has not been lost. ungekürzt.
