The SS Eastland Disaster: The History of the Deadliest Shipwreck on the Great Lakes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 77min
When people discuss deadly maritime disasters during the second decade of the 20th century in which more than 800 people were killed, they're often talking about the Titanic or Lusitania, not the Eastland on the Chicago River. However, shockingly enough, on July 24, 1915, a ship full of sightseers out for a day on the Great Lakes capsized while still tied to a dock, sending more than 2,500 passengers into the frigid water. By the time the ship was righted and rescue efforts were completed, nearly 850 people had been killed. As unbelievable as the incident seemed, the Eastland was actually susceptible to just such a problem as a result of its issues with listing, and on top of that, the ship seemed to have all sorts of bad luck in its past, including a collision with another boat and even a mutiny on board. If anything, the safety protocols established after the sinking of the Titanic, most notably the inclusion of enough lifeboats on board for every passenger, made the Eastland even more top heavy and contributed to the disaster. Ultimately, several individuals were charged with crimes in connection with the Eastland disaster, but none would be found guilty. The SS Eastland Disaster: The History of the Deadliest Shipwreck on the Great Lakes chronicles the story of the disaster and its aftermath. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pam Tierney. In Other Words , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 413min
From the best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner, a powerful nonfiction debut - an "honest, engaging, and very moving account of a writer searching for herself in words" (Kirkus Reviews). In Other Words is a revelation. It is at heart a love story - of a long and sometimes difficult courtship and a passion that verges on obsession: that of a writer for another language. For Jhumpa Lahiri, that love was for Italian, which first captivated and capsized her during a trip to Florence after college. Although Lahiri studied Italian for many years afterward, true mastery always eluded her. Seeking full immersion, she decides to move to Rome with her family, for "a trial by fire, a sort of baptism" into a new language and world. There, she begins to read and to write - initially in her journal - solely in Italian. In Other Words, an autobiographical work written in Italian, investigates the process of learning to express oneself in another language and describes the journey of a writer seeking a new voice. Presented in a dual-language format, this is a wholly original book about exile, linguistic and otherwise, written with an intensity and clarity not seen since Vladimir Nabokov: a startling act of self-reflection and a provocative exploration of belonging and reinvention. Read by the author, in both English and the original Italian ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jhumpa Lahiri. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/026193/bk_adbl_026193_sample.mp3. Thirst!
Prohibition was the law of the land in both Ontario and the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Yet because of the one key difference between Ontario's Temperance Act and America's Eighteenth Amendment, smugglers could make small fortunes transporting Ontario booze through the Great Lakes to harbours in America. Thirst! A Story of Prohibition in Ontario relates the account of how one such smuggling ship, the doomed City of Dresden, ended capsized on a sand bar off the north shore of Lake Erie just west of Port Rowan, Ontario, in late November, 1922. The author details how the local inhabitants handled the liquid cargo and how the prohibition authorities dealt with the local farmers. The use of reminiscences, historical excerpts from newspapers, and a one-hundred-page court record of the trials of the farmers, bring real-life characters to the page, giving readers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of farmers, bootleggers, and government enforcers at the heart of his story. Thirst! also uses the story of the wreck of the Dresden as a springboard to explore some of the main themes related to prohibition: the solidarity of a community when threatened by outside forces; reactions to unpopular laws and those who enforce those laws; how greed can force people to take unnecessary risks; the rivalry between city and village, and the beginning of disillusionment with prohibition itself. Readers having an interest in early twentieth century Ontario history, especially prohibition, and those familiar with Long Point and Lake Erie will find Thirst! A Story of Prohibition in Ontario an enjoyable and informative study.- Shop: buecher

By the time it had passed, the havoc caused was immeasurable. Even more devastating, it had mercilessly taken the lives of fifteen sailors. It had been Nick Ward's childhood ambition to sail in the Fastnet Race, and after being asked to join the crew aboard the 30-foot yacht Grimalkin it was a dream come true. But then the storm hit. Grimalkin was capsized again and again, the skipper was lost overboard and after hours of struggle, three of the crew decided to abandon the boat for the liferaft. Nick and his fellow crewmember Gerry, both injured and unconscious, were left on the beleaguered yacht in the middle of the Irish Sea. Both were presumed dead, and were taken off the priority list for rescue. Gerry died a few hours later, and Nick was left to face the storm alone. Left for Dead is the tragic and inspirational story of Nick Ward's survival against all the odds. It is the story of an ordinary man who survived an extraordinary event. As members of the yearbook committee, Nick, Zola, Matt, and Christina are eager to capture all the memorable moments of their junior year at Lewis and Clark High School - the plays and football games, dances and fund-drives, teachers and classes that are the epicenter of their teenage lives. But how do you document a horrific tragedy - a deadly school shooting by a classmate? Struggling to comprehend this cataclysmic event - and propelled by a sense of responsibility to the town, their parents, and their school - these four "lucky" survivors vow to honor the memories of those lost and the memories forgotten in the shadow of violence. But the shooting is only the first inexplicable trauma to rock their small suburban town. A series of mysterious house fires have hit the families of the victims one by one, pushing the grieving town to the edge. Nick, the son of the lead detective investigating the events, plunges into the case on his own, scouring the Internet to uncover what could cause a fire with no evident starting point. Murder in the Museum: An Edmund DeCleryk Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 430min
Early one gray November morning, retired Lighthouse Cove, New York, police chief Edmund DeCleryk finds Emily Bradford's body on the beach at the base of the bluff where the local museum and historical society stands. At the same time, a break-in has been reported at the museum, and Emily's coat and purse are found hanging on a peg in the museum's gift shop, where she worked. Was her death the result of a burglary gone bad or something more sinister? When the police chief is called out of town for a family emergency, he hires Ed, now working as a criminal consultant, to assist Deputy Police Chief Carrie Ramos with the murder investigation. After several leads don't pan out, the chief, now back in Lighthouse Cove, decides to close the case. Confident that with more time the murder can be solved, Ed is determined to continue investigating on his own, with encouragement from his wife, Annie, the museum's executive director. One morning while in the basement of the museum, the couple discovers a copy of a map dated 1785, and Ed's instincts tell him it may be connected to Emily's death. On a hunch, he and Annie travel to Toronto, Canada, where he learns of the original map and a manuscript written in 1847 that was unearthed during an architectural dig. The manuscript contains information about a ship that capsized during a fierce storm on Lake Ontario - in 1785. Now Ed has clues as to why the murder occurred, but he still doesn't know who committed the crime. Or does he? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John DiLeonardo.
