From critically acclaimed, award-winning author Michelle Huneven, a sharp and funny novel of a congregational search committee, told as a memoir with recipes Dana Potowski is a restaurant critic and food writer and a longtime member of a progressive Unitarian Universalist congregation in Southern California. Just as she's finishing the book tour for her latest bestseller, Dana is asked to join the church search committee for a new minister. Under pressure to find her next book idea, she agrees, and resolves to secretly pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience. That memoir, Search, follows the travails of the committee and their candidates-and becomes its own media sensation. Dana had good material to work with: the committee is a wide-ranging mix of Unitarian Universalist congregants, and their candidates range from a baker and microbrew master/pastor to a reverend who identifies as both a witch and an environmental warrior. Ultimately, the committee faces a stark choice between two very different paths forward for the congregation. Although she may have been ambivalent about joining the committee, Dana finds that she cares deeply about the fate of this institution and she will fight the entire committee, if necessary, to win the day for her side. This wry and wise tale will speak to anyone who has ever gone searching, and James Beard Award-winning author Michelle Huneven's food writing and recipes add flavor to the delightful journey.- Shop: buecher

Elevation to Maturity: Lessons from Timothy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 73min
If you took a census within any Sunday Service or Church meeting, at least 80% of the congregants would profess the desire to become a matured believer for Christ. But if you press the group to take their desire into practical day to day applications, the number of willing participants will significantly decline. It begs the point that when most people talk about maturity they mean: "I will, as long as it does not interfere with my work". "I will, as long as I don't have to be told what to do by someone else". "I will, as long as I can simply read and know the Bible in my house or on my own". The list is endless! Thank God we have the remnants that are willing to go beyond their personal comfort zones to reach the stage where they are more usable by God. Right now four Scriptures flow into my mind. 2 Timothy 2:20: "In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 2 Timothy 2:21: "Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work." This scripture places the responsibility of being useful to God firmly in the lap of the believer. Of course God is there to help you by His Spirit but you must be committed to playing your part, otherwise the usefulness (not the salvation) of that believer is limited and maturity will be a dream. ungekürzt. Bodies and Souls , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 975min
In this fast, steamy novel by New York Times bestselling author Nancy Thayer, residents of a seemingly picture perfect New England town struggle to hide their shocking secrets...until they can no longer. Now available for the first time in audio! From his position behind the pulpit, Reverend Peter Taylor has a unique view of his affluent congregants. By and large, they appear respectable and morally upstanding, but they have their share of troubles - and perhaps even more than their share of sins. Liza Howard is a notorious Jezebel who seduces young and old alike, and who now has her sights set on Judy Bennett’s son, despite his engagement. Meanwhile, Judy hides her own family secrets behind her relentless judgment of others. Widow Suzanna Blair’s newly found passion for her female professor has her questioning the life she’s always known. Whispers in the Pews: Voices on Mental Illness in the Church , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 276min
Mental Illness is real. Will the Church get real? This book is a collection of essays from various authors: men and women, pastors and congregants, counselors and nurses, parents and children. All have a unique view of how mental health conditions affect people, and how the church has responded to these circumstances. Whispers in the Pews tackles how the mentally ill have been, and still are, treated in the church at large by sharing stories. This is not fundamentally a teaching book, but a book of moments and lives, knitted together by the common theme of mental health. No sermons will be included, though lessons learned from difficulties and their foundations in Scripture are encouraged. This collection will expand your vision, and your heart, about what the church does well for the mentally ill, and where we can improve. Advance Praise for Whispers in the Pews:"I am ridiculously excited for the stories in this book to be shared. There is an incredible need to discuss the reality of mental illness and how the church can improve how it addresses this." (Colleen English, founder of Rettland Foundation)“I cannot imagine Jesus scolding someone with a mental illness, telling them to just get over it, try harder, memorize more verses. No, he would listen. He would love. He would be filled with compassion. And even he was deemed mentally ill in his time, his miracles attributed to demonic activity. In short, Jesus empathizes with people who don’t fit a culture’s mold. But the church? We can either cause more suffering or create pathways of hope. Sadly, through ignorance and Christian platitudes we’ve done more of the former than the latter. This book offers incredibly precious insight to help the church become like Jesus for those who suffer. Listen to this book. Give it to your pastors and leaders. Revolutionary seems too small a word.” (Mary DeMuth, author of The Seven Deadly Friendships) "Chr ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dana Black. The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
Can I get a "ramen" from the congregation?! Behold the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), today's fastest growing carbohydrate-based religion. According to church founder Bobby Henderson, the universe and all life within it were created by a mystical and divine being: the Flying Spaghetti Monster. What drives the FSM' s devout followers, a.k.a. Pastafarians? Some say it's the assuring touch from the FSM's "noodly appendage." Then there are those who love the worship service, which is conducted in pirate talk and attended by congregants in dashing buccaneer garb. Still others are drawn to the Church's flimsy moral standards, religious holidays every Friday, or the fact that Pastafarian heaven is way cooler: Does your heaven have a Stripper Factory and a Beer Volcano? Intelligent Design has finally met its match-and it has nothing to do with apes or the Olive Garden of Eden. Within these pages, Bobby Henderson outlines the true facts- dispelling such malicious myths as evolution ("only a theory"), science ("only a lot of theories"), and whether we're really descended from apes (fact: Humans share 95 percent of their DNA with chimpanzees, but they share 99.9 percent with pirates!) See what impressively credentialed top scientists have to say: "If Intelligent Design is taught in schools, equal time should be given to the FSM theory and the non-FSM theory." -Professor Douglas Shaw, Ph.D. "Do not be hypocritical. Allow equal time for other alternative 'theories' like FSMism, which is by far the tastier choice." -J. Simon, Ph.D. "In my scientific opinion, when comparing the two theories, FSM theory seems to be more valid than classic ID theory." -Afshin Beheshti, Ph.D. Read the book and decide for yourself!- Shop: buecher
